[ According to press accounts, at their first concert, New Order were billed as the

[ "Expectation was high for the old jd fans who really wanted the band to
succeed.  I can't remember much about the tracks played on the night, as
ever the gig was over before we knew it.  However I remember coming away
knowing I'd seen something special.  20 years on the new material is just
as fresh."  Thanks to Neill Cordon for the memory!

26 SEP 81 Bodiam Castle - England (cancelled "Mystery Venue" concert)
[ "The concert was organised by FINAL SOLUTION and coaches were due to
leave Speakers Corner, Marble Arch, London at 4.30pm. It was billed as
NEW ORDER & GUESTS.  To this day I do not know where we were going
but the rumour was a castle in Wales and it was cancelled because the
grounds were flooded. I would be grateful if anyone could shed some
light on this".  Courtesy of Christopher Wood.

Peter Munnery heard rumours that the secret venue was actually a
castle in Kent.  A moot point really, since the concert was cancelled,
but thanks go out to both of you for the info.

** Mystery Solved ** An Anonymous Insider explains everything with this:
"The mystery venue was not in Wales. It was Bodiam Castle in Kent. The weather was
not good that day, very rainy, and by the time we got there the road crew had set up
the stage - imagine a square and the stage would have been across one corner, but
their opinion was that due to the general wetness and the rain driving into the
equipment it would not be safe to play. Accordingly, after much discussion, the
gig was cancelled, ticket holders were given a ticket for free entry into Heaven a
day or 2 later, and we made our way back to London and went our separate ways." ]

29 NOV 82 Capitol Theatre - Sydney, Australia 50
According to one observer, the band along with John Cooper Clarke decided
to encore with what's described as a stunning and unique version of VU's
'Lady Godiva's Operation'.

Tim McGee states that "I can vaguely remember an encore at the Capitol,
perhaps with JCC, but I'm sure I would remember if it was an obscure
Velvets tune. Sounds apocryphal to me. but then they'd probably do anything
if the mood took them.

10 DEC 82 Selina's (Coogee Bay Hotel) - Sydney, Australia ??
11 DEC 82 Manly Vale Hotel - Sydney, Australia ??
[ Tim McGee shares his notes about the tour. ]

"My sister's band, Pel Mel, supported them on tour and played before
them (not sure if it was every gig but certainly in Sydney and Melbourne.)
I don't think there was another support band except JCC.

The tour was promoted by Ken West and Vivien Lees ? who are the promoter
who run The Big Day Out for many years ? Australia?s biggest festival tour.
Ken has a great history managing bands like The Laughing Clowns (with ex-
Saint Ed Kuepper) and Pel Mel and also promoting tours of bands like The
Birthday Party."

I certainly saw the concerts at the Capitol, Manly Vale and Selinas. JCC did
support them, and we also saw him at the Trade Union Club, where he did a
fairly high intensity set that had the punters in a highly argumentative state
fairly quickly. He also told some great jokes (!) I seem to remember, when
he wasn't railing to the backing track at a million miles.

The Manly Vale is closed I think. It was a huge suburban beer barn, with a
good room for music. I saw countless bands there including Echo & Bunnymen
in November 1981 (again I think I was there with Pel Mel supporting), also
The Cure in 1981. It was a giant room, very high, but with good sound. I
remember a cracking Blue Monday that night."

[ "Only some of us at Atlanta's 688 club knew the significance of the evening.
It was New Order's first US gig... after Ian Curtis' suicide had halted Joy
Division's scheduled US tour. Nonetheless, some bastard yelled "Where's
Ian?" as the drumulators and other synths kicked in. (Hooky replied with a
"F*** off!" that was met with cheers. "Confusion" was new to everyone at the
time. The volume seemed to double in the middle of "In a Lonely Place" and
the band had enough sound gear for a space twice as big as the cramped 688.
The X and the trip kicked in just in time. It was epic... and unforgettable.
I have a bootleg cassette of the gig... somewhere."
Mega-thanks to Mark Bedford for recalling the famous 688 gig for us! Even if he
wasn't aware of New Order's 1980 and 1981 Stateside visits ]

in remembrance of IC who died four years earlier. The band was very hostile
towards the audience and reminded them of the Rotterdam gig some years
before when a big fight broke out after they had only played 20 minutes.
The encore included Decades and Love will ..., it was made clear to the
audience that it wasn't for them but for a friend who died some years ago." ]

roadie to make sure of it.  Barney was blonde that night and the computers were
playing for about five minutes before the band came on.  The stage was an

[ "The Powerhouse was a great gig.  It is a standing room venue and
was totally sold-out.  The atmosphere was electric and audience
expectation was palpable as they walked on stage.  The start was
fantastic as Barney picked up his axe (err, melodica) and launched
into "Your Silent Face" backed by a tremendous wall-of-sequencer
sound.  They then quickly moved into Sub-culture; with Hooky
unleashed the crowd went gaga and stayed that way for the rest
of the gig.

My indelible moment is just before The Drums start in Sunrise.
My brother is slightly ahead of me in the crowd and he has jumped
so far into the air in anticipation of this moment that the whole top
half of his body is visible above the rest of the crowd :-)

Barney quote before final encore (paraphrased) "Does anybody
know what today is?  Come on, some one shout it out" (note: it may or
may not be significant that it was past midnight at this point).
They played "Love Will Tear Us Apart", and the audience
goes even more gaga (if that were possible)."

"I was at the Aug. 4 1985 concert in Toronto. The whole thing was
videotaped
at the side of the stage by local radio station  CFNY.
They later played part of the audio of this tape  on air. Peter Hook
introduces Age of Consent by asking the crowd " Have any kids? No?
Then fuck ya." He also says during the programmed intro to
The Perfect Kiss "Saves use doing it I suppose."

Thanks to James for his account of this concert!

Here's a clarification from Paul Boyd (RIP):

"With apologies to James, I am the person who videotaped the concert. I
was permitted to with do so with permission of Rob Gretton and the band
who furnished me with a stereo board feed. Previously, I also had done a
stereo television simulcast with Durutti Column, another Factory artist
here in Toronto. I was not affiliated with CFNY in any way. CFNY did
indeed record the concert with a full 24 track analog audio recorder via
mobile truck, and it was sent to the band to remix. It was remixed and
edited ( the band did not want a live radio recording available of  " As
It Is When It Was " as the BROTHERHOOD album had not been released yet )
and the station aired it a number of times. The videotape that was made
has since been remastered to digital dvd to preserve it. I own the
copyright of that recording. Though there are no plans to release it
commercially, Steve Morris told me after he'd viewed it the the band
liked the recording much more than the Tokyo show "Pumped Full of
Drugs". " We played better in Toronto and we liked the look of your
video better, a bit darker looking ".

Daniel Piedra adds: "Just thought I would share some info related to the show.
I was there and a couple of observations:

  • The International Centre was an exhibition space for Auto Shows,
and the like, so it was quite bad for sound. Not many shows were ever
    scheduled there again.
  • A Certain Ratio (Factory Records) Opened this show and were very good
  • The place was hot as hell on a warm, humid summer day. Most left soaked
and some retired from the front of the stage due to heat exhaustion."

[ "I don't remember the opening band for the show or if there was one.  The
show started very late.  Bernard changed the lyric in Love Vigilantes' from
'I was a brave, brave man but that I was dead' to "I was a stupid cunt and
that I got shot.' much to the chagrin of the crowd, 'Blue Monday was not
on the setlist that evening."  Thanks to
    ry_guy_dallasATyahoo.com for the info.
    ]

[ A second entry comes from Ron Richards...alas, the setlist doesn't 100% match
    his observations.

"I remember with absolute clarity certain things about this show because I
happened to work for the local promoter of this event and was a local
college DJ at the time. I had backstage access for the show and I handled
the catering and dealt with their special needs.

#1-  I was supposed to be at a Saturday Evening class at the University
writing a Final term paper for my letter grade and I ditched class, took the
"F" for the semester and had a blast doing it.

#2-Bernie didn't say 2 words after the show. The rest of the band were
backstage signing autographs for the lucky few who were allowed backstage to
meet the band. I remember distinctly that this one girl asked Peter to sign
her Mickey Mouse Sweatshirt and he drew a large penis on Mickey and signed
his name on the big penis (swear to God!). I was able to get Stephen to
accompany me down a long hallway and into an area of shower stalls so that I
could get him to record a promo for our local radio station. We chatted
briefly about who knows what. Gillian sat at a table & was rambling on about
her cats to somebody while Bernie sat in a foldout chair leaned back on 2
legs against the wall with his head staring down at the ground.

#3- The band started 45 minutes late due to the fact that they couldn't find
the venue. The venue actually was on the county fairgrounds in a rather
rustic old indoor circular barn for indoor animal competitions I guess...
The floor was solid hard dirt & was very dusty inside. Peter had a hell of a
time with the synthesized drum kit and started banging on it like a madman
disregarding certain songs which they happened to be performing. Someone
shouted for "Blue Monday during their 1st encore. Peter yelled back at the
guy saying that he "could go home & listen to it on (his) record if (he)
fancied" & that they were sick of the song. They then broke into Temptation
followed by Mesh. The 2nd Encore was "Love Vigilantes". I also do know that
during the show they played "State of The Nation", "Perfect Kiss",
"Confusion", "This Time Of Night", "Age Of Consent", "Subculture" and
several more. The show lasted a good 1 1/4 hours which I didn't expect since
they came on late. The DIDN'T play "Thieves Like US" which pissed me off to
    no end." ]

[ Colin Kerr had this to say about this and other New Order
performances in Edinburgh... "A kind of interesting note about
the Edinburgh concerts NO played was an increasing apparent
dislike of Edinburgh audiences.  The 83 shows went well enough
but the Feb 85 show was marred by a 10 o'clock council deadline
on noise.  The Royal Family and the Poor played on a bit late so
NO were rushed on and Barney muttered something about hating
    Edinburgh and 'yer fookin council'...

the 86 show at the Playhouse was worse.  The show itself was ok
if a bit devoid of any passion and near the end Barney said 'I hate
playing in Edinburgh'  he muttered something else then went on
about how nobody danced or moved and it was like we were all
fenced in by chicken wire.  The next night in Glasgow, a much better
venue and show, he said 'I always like playing in Glasgow.  Much
prefer it to Edinburgh' cue big cheer. Also before perfect kiss he said
'Perfect Kiss as played perfectly by New Order'.  An interesting point
about LWTUA that night as that I read at an earlier concert it was
dedicated to someone who had died years before.  At Glasgow that
night PH introduced it 'This is for someone who can't be with us
tonight, coz she's(no typo) dead, so 1,2,3,4...'. ]

[ "The Finsbury Park gig on 6.6.87 was an all-day Factory gig. Before NO, there
was The Railway Children, Happy Mondays and A Certain Ratio. Before NO came
on I remember there being a lot of concern about people being crushed, and
one of the roadies was trying to get Mike Pickering, DJ on the day, to stop
playing records so people could hear him  - without much success it has to
be said. It's interesting what Colin Kerr says about Barney's comment at the
start of the Edinburgh Playhouse gig on 11.9.86. At Finsbury Park he came on
and said: "Hello everyone we'd like to dedicate this set to Caroline and
Peter who should have been here tonight but Caroline's not here because
she's dead" in the most laconic voice imaginable. Thinking this to be a
joke, some audience members laughed, to which Barney replied "It's not a
joke and it's not funny, but then again we never are", then launching into
'Touched By the Hand of God'.

They were introduced on stage that night by Rob Gretton as 'Joy Division
from Macclesfield', much to the confusion of a young Spanish couple in front
of me."  Thanks to Ken Brough for the info! ]

    NEW ORDER, Maracanãzinho, RJ

"The band is quite insecure, there's one year since they don't play live and
Gillian shoots some little buttons in the wrong time, but little by little
they warm up, reaching the boiling point in a sublime "Every Little Counts",
which instrumental ending stretches in a body and soul symbiosis between
Peter Hook and Steve Morris. (...) And the rock'n'roll band New Order once
was is still there, pulsating and sweating in this twosome that innovated
the concept of "rhythmical section" and surprised the world turning
themselves into the best "Eurodisco" of the decade." (José Augusto Lemos)

[ "...The opening act was Throwing Muses. The gig was plagued with technical
difficulties (ironic, considering the name of the album they were touring) and the
crowd (a lot of budding young Goths, punks, Bolanites, and gays with faghags
in tow, all a really nice bunch really) was restless to unruly during the five to ten
minute gaps between songs. NO was very busy onstage and the only one who
seemed to be having a good time was Peter Hook, with his bass hanging below
his knees (how in the hell can he play like that?!) and his hair pulled up like he
was doing Kabuki theatre. But when they got it all together it was pure magic.
No band on Earth or elsewhere is capable of reproducing and presenting its
intricate, complicated music as well as NO..."  Thanks again to Mike DeWitt!

Peter Hook stopping a would be stage diver by pushing him by his face
back into his seat and Bernard altering the lyric to 'Round & Round' with
"What is it you need that makes your pussy bleed?".   It was one of my
first and favorite shows, not because they perfomed particularly well
but because they were a band I loved!" - That is classic, thanks Rod Sawyer!

And from Joseph Swartz: "At the Seattle gig 03 May 1989, I vaguely remember
Bernard substituting another lyric during Round & Round, changing: "I am
weak while you are strong" to "I have got a twelve-inch dong". That may
not be the EXACT wording, as its now been 18 years since that show, but the
twelve-inch dong part is right I think. And I remember the "makes your pussy
    bleed" bit too. Funny!" ]

[ "Set list slightly altered from Manchester gigs and the Monday night
gig had no encore of Regret or Blue Monday, or any encore at all, which
considering the band seemed to be really digging the concert, and considering
that the band encored on the Sunday night was quite surprising to the
Glasgow audience! Hooky seemed to have a problem with a member of
the audience, which has made some wonder if that's why there was no
encore..... others think that the Barrowlands is notorious for strict timescales
and stopped them playing. Rumours aplenty, like band arguments etc..."
Thanks to marzi for the above insight... ]

[ And Thierry Dory had a similar view...  "The sound was very "rotten" but
the audience was very excited.  The band plays during 1h10 minutes and
that's all. Maybe because of the poor quality of the sound... I don't know
but the audience was very disappointed...Because the band leave  the stage
only with a little "good night" and after waiting 5 minutes in the dark
waiting a "encore" nothing came... Not a great night. (I came especially from
Brussels to see them) and there was people came especially from Japan..." ]

[ Even more info about this strange concert comes from Simon Smith who
    shares this, "
On Monday Sumner demanded "Turn Hooky down" twice
during Temptation, which he wasn't happy about.  They had a quiet word
with each other then launched into Transmission before both making a
sharp exit.  My interpretation was that the bass was too loud and it had
been getting louder each night. This followed from Apollo gigs where it
was definitely heavier bass on the Friday.  The set list was to include
Rock the Shack & Blue Monday I believe. This is reason for no encore. ]

[ "A storming night. They claimed it was their first London gig in 15 years and
looked really up for it. Funniest moment was when Bernard introduced Rock
The Shack, saying, "We've played this six times and fucked it up every
time," 30 seconds later it collapsed into a huge mess. Ceremony and
Temptation were awesome. A fine return."  Thanks for this go to Dominic Smith!! ]

gig in all, True Faith, Temptation and Love Will Tear Us Apart in particular
were amazing. Hooky and Barney were on form also, exchanging banter after
each song though frankly it was pretty unintelligible."

times but there were some great times with some fucking good versions of
Ceremony, Your Silent Face, Temptation and a very great end with a
memorable version of Blue Monday.  ...Very good atmosphere in the
audience and the band seems enjoying to be in Paris."

[ "The mc introduced the band as "those five lads from Rochdale", but
of course only four lads took to the stage.  Also, spray-painted on the
speakers on stage was "VIVA SALFORD".  Great show by the boys.
Bernard and Hooky were in fine form, and the "assistant guitarist" Filthy Phil
Cunningham played some hot licks, with the occasional impersonation of the
Pete Townsend windmill style of playing.  During the show, Bernard made
his football supporting allegiance plain, when he enquired of the audience
"Any Manchester United fans in?". A few cheers went up, and when he
carried on with "Any Liverpool fans in?" he received even louder
cheers, to which he retorted "Well, you can all **** off, the lot of you".
Hooky gave one of his drumsticks to an appreciative fan on the front
row and threw the other into the balcony.  Two supports came on:
Benjamin Biolay and Bosco, who tried hard but unfortunately got a
mixed reception including some boos, but hey we did not come to
see them."  The above memories courtesy of Nigel Openshaw. ]

[ "We had to wait nearly 90 Min. till the band went on stage. The fucking dj,
as supporting act, annoyed the crowd very much. Everybody was shaking
his ticket in order to show him that we paid for New Order. When finally
New Order came on stage they apologized themselves and in the end it was
simply a fantastic concert." Props to Daniel Sirch for this submission! ]

[ From the start of the show, Bernie said that "Unfortunately we went out
after the Berlin gig..., sorry, that's why we are 20 minutes late, it's very
hard for us to play tonight because we are tired, but we will try to do the
best for you". I was afraid but after some seconds I was not.
The band seems physically tired but in very good shapes mentally.
They concentrated more than usual and they play very good with some
great versions of "bizarre love triangle", "true faith", "rock the shack" and
the best version I've heard of "Love will tear us apart".
The band was very relaxed. For "Touched by the hand of god" they invited
Arthur Baker to join them on stage and do some scratching noise on it.
There were a lot of people in the audience, a little bit too much for the
place, and Barney even apologized for those who had difficulties seeing the
stage "If you find me after the show, I'll give you back your money... If you
can find me...".  Hooky was unusually quiet but at the end of the show he
offered his pullover to the audience.  A very cool and very nice evening.
PS: spray-painted on the speakers on stage was "SALFORD RULES"

[ "New Order was back playing in Sweden for the first time in nearly 19 years.
Arthur Baker was DJ-ing before the concert. Remixes of Confusion and
some Beach Boy's Good vibrations just before he presented "the best
band in the world".  Bernard dedicated the concert to Sven-Goran Eriksson,
the successful Swedish manager of England's national football team.  The
spraying on Hook's speakers had been changed to "Living legend".
Unfortunately he had almost constant troubles with the bass sound
throughout the concert, and several strings broken. But he didn't seem
to bother too much. They all seemed to be in a very good mood, but
at the same time glad that the 7 day European tour had come to an end.
Bernard said they were tired.  Stunning versions of Your silent face,
Temptation and LWTUA." Kudos to Ulf Sigvardson for the recap! ]

[ And Marcus Linden was nice enough to send this little tidbit over...
"Bernard had some problems with his voice throughout the gig. On one
occasion Peter Hook jumped off the stage and down into the audience.
With Peter Hook's bad temper during the early days in mind (I guess),
the roadies ran after him only to find him being photographed together
with a fan. Hook was annoyed at people not being allowed to take photos
during the show and said that since they only play Stockholm every
twenty years people ought to be able to do so." ]

[ "...Considering some of the recollections of previous concerts and the
possibility of band members becoming annoyed at anything from the venue
to themselves I was very impressed with the way the concert went off.
Bernard and Peter seemed to be really enjoying themselves. Peter
especially was playing up to the crowd at one stage revealing what
looked to be the slightest signs of pot belly. Bernard even at one stage
joked and said that we were all probably sick of their electronic and
guitar stuff and then proceeded to launch into Bizarre Love Triangle.
I think Bernard had some trouble with the sound of the drums being to
loud but this did not seem to quell his obvious enthusiasm and energy.
In fact they played like the were 20 years of age and made me feel like I
wasn't worthy of being there as they should have had a more vocal wild
crowd. That's not to say everyone did not have a great time. Everyone
that I spoke to after the concert said they really enjoyed it. If I had
the money I would have gone to Melbourne also, but I believe this sold
out over 3 weeks ago.  Maybe I am easily pleased but I had great time
and thought the Band gave close to 100 percent. The only disappointment
was that Gillian did not make an appearance and wonder whether she is
actually on the tour as the promotion material suggested the original line
up would be touring."  Concert report courtesy of Stephen Rodgers. ]

"New Order played the twilight slot, starting in daylight and finishing after dark.
The sound was muddy (a common problem with outdoor gigs). Barney claimed
to be unhappy about playing in daylight: "the gaps between songs are going
to get longer until it gets dark".  Hooky was prowling all over the stage, and
rearranging equipment if it got in his way.  For example, kicking an unused
spotlight off the lip of the 2m high stage... which barely missed the head of a
security guard much to Hooky's chagrin and embarrassment.  Later in the gig he
apologized to the guard by pretending to drop his bass on him. :-)"

[ "I've been waiting about 15 years (Seaside Festival, Belgium, mid-80's) to
see this great band again live on stage. But what a disappointment! Bernie
apologizes for this being their first gig since February. But there are no
excuses for the lousy sound (not even the half empty venue), for roadies who
bring out-of-tune guitars and have to do a check-up after almost every song
(Amateurs! Fire them now!). The band seems in a good mood but they mess up
most of the songs by their enthusiasm and nonchalance. Who wants to hear
Bernie shouting and whistling during almost every song and especially during
'Atmosphere'??? And there's nothing wrong with being a Manchester
United-fan, but who wants to be joined by shouting and jumping football fans
during a concert? Nice set list though, with lots of surprises (like the
mediocre 'Brutal', from the 'Beach'-soundtrack, and the Joy Division-pearl
'Digital', but no 'Touched by the hand of God'). But as a whole: what a
disillusionment! I will keep playing my New Order records and video
tapes/DVD's, but I never want to see this band on a stage again. By the way,
thank you, Doves, for the nice opening show."  Thanks Gunter Jacobs! ].

And in response... (several people have disagreed with the above view):

[ Al Jarvis said, "Lousy sound? Nonchalance? Shouting and whistling?
This sounds like a very TYPICAL New Order gig to me, and one I personally
thoroughly enjoyed. I'm surprised at Gunter's comments about jumping and
shouting fans. In England the gigs are ten times more raucous than this
(and all the better for that atmosphere) whereas I thought the Paris audience
was very restrained and my Mrs. even managed to squeeze down the front for
most of the set - something she could never dream of doing on home soil.
Frankly, it's a shame Gunter didn't enjoy this gig but I can't even begin to imagine
what he thought an actual New Order gig would be like? Also, the venue
was Sold Out, so I don't know where the half-empty comment came from?" ]

    And another rebuttal to Gunter:

[ "I read the comment of Gunter about Le zenith gig and I have to strongly
disagree with him : - "half empty venue", the Zenith was in "small configuration"
so it was actually full. There is no room in Paris in between the Olympia and
Zenith so it was the best choice to be made - the sound was crap during
crystal and then became better. - if you don't like barney shooting, indeed
do not go to NO concert.  That was for the disagreement, here is my positive
review:  When I saw them in November I was impressed to see them live for
the first time and very exited to here Transmission or LWTUA as JD is my
favorite band. The May show was even better, the band was HAPPY to play
and made lots of jokes especially about Hooky's technical problems
"Barney : I am really sorry, you can ask your money back, I thought this
was a professional bass player". This gig was fun like a party, but also very
intense especially during the JD covers : so NO on stage is fun and
emotion. Digital and She's lost control were breathtaking. I never saw JD
live, but I really understood what it should have been live, far better
than on my bootleg-tapes." Contributed by Jean-Christophe Gombeaud. ]
