Tidbit from Roger Lyons from Lionrock, who is responsible for the live programming on New Order's current tour:

...even as I am writing this I am importing a New Order Gig (Liverpool 2001) from 40 track ADATs and I would like to do a surround mix of this in Nuendo.

Subject: (Fac33) Erm, some sort of NewOrder gig

Ow.

I'm in pain cos I've just been crushed at the front of the best NewOrder gig I have seen. OK, so the only ones I've seen are Reading 98 and Ally Pally before this one but OH MY GOD!

Opened with Atmosphere as a tribute to Rob Gretton and Hooky's Mum, then went on through a bevy of new and old tracks including Every Little Counts, Love Vigilantes, Crystal, Blauer Montag (of course), 60MPH and more which I can't be arsed to write out but I'm sure the set list will i appear somewhere soon.

Corgan didn't piss me off. He didn't say a thing all night and was only really audible on Turn My Way, Ruined in a Day and Blauer Montag - and even then his vocals were only apparent on Turn My Way, his guitar on Ruined in a Day and Blauer Montag.

Hooky was fucking loving it as usual, walking head down into Corgan, winding Barney up and stomping around the stage. Barney even looked as if he was enjoying himself too.

The new album sounds VERY good live. Not sure about Turn My Way or Slow Jam but Crystal and 60MPH just rock. It's gonna be a good one.

People of note spotted at the front include Andy Robinson and that roadie who looks like Arthur Baker and appears in The Perfect Kiss video.

The Olympia was a fantastic venue too - nice and small. But we won't even mention the, erm, After Show Party. Oh dear.

I think Barney summed it all up best when he said - "Woooo!"

Transcription(s):

From 192mbps mp3 of DAT apparently recorded backstage...which was
missing the Alan Wise intro, which I have on another version of this show (very likely the same source, confusingly enough).

Intro

AW: "Now I know the band's been away, they've been a way a long time, and I don't know [this Allannah?]. Let's face it, they've been surpassed by better talents like the Spice Girls. Yes, so I took a look around, and then I thought, 'Why don't we get rid of all the blokes in the band and have an all-girl band. That's a bit better, innit? By the way, hello to Mrs. Smith, lemme see... John Smith, Dave Smith, and the wankers from Hollywood or something. Right, I want you to welcome now then, the new all-girl band from Manchester, the ladies of the JOY DIVISION."

Loud cheers and cries for New Order. The MP3 recording starts after Bernard greets the audience.

Atmosphere

BS: "Hello. Feels like we've never been away. Please welcome...Billy Corgan...and Phil Cunningham, our new guitarist for tonight. Hope you're gonna enjoy what we're gonna do...cuz we certainly are. Let's have a great time! [hooky chuckles] Here we go."

PH: "Just a sober moment, this is for all the people that can't be here, this for Becky, Rob Gretton, and my mother, God bless them all!"

Barney whoops a few times during this song. He stopped doing this after the backlash against his overexuberance at what is supposed to be a dirgeful ballad.

BS: "Thank you. Thanks a lot!"

Slow_Jam

BS: "Okay, this is a song off our new album, which is called Get Ready, and the song's called Slow Jam, hope you like it!"

Audience member yells out something "sure we will..."

BS: "So listen carefully..."

This version is faster and more guitar-based, and missing the synth squiggle. Mix has Barney's vocals move from right to center and back again...don't know if the taper was moving during the first verse.

Some wah-wah guitar near the end. And Hooky can clearly be heard doing the ending chorus.

BS: "Thank you, you're very patient..."

Crystal

BS: "Okay, this is another new one. but you have to be patient cuz we're gonna play a lot of songs for you tonight. We're gonna play for a whole hour and a...hour and a half, which by our standards is a very long time. [guitar chord]. And by the end of the set, by your standards it'll be a very long time as well."

Piano into for Crystal starts.

BS: "This is Crystal, our new single. You've not heard it yet?"

Somebody yells "Hooooookkkkky!" at least twice.

Drum backing seems to be a bit different, vocals are low in the mix and a bit off. Plenty of whoops, though. "You shock me to the core, ooh, yeah!"

BS: "'ak you." [guitar/bass strum] "Oh, it wasn't bad, wasn't it, was it all right?. All right, now we're playing...after we bored you with those new songs, we're gonna play something you know now. "That's how we know it as well."

Regret

BS: "Jeremy, make sure I hear the click, please."

Volume levels go up and sound is clearer...

BS: "Woo! Thank you!"

Audience starts chanting "New Order, New Order, New Order!"

Love_Vigilantes

PH: "This one is for your dad. Prin(?) God bless..."

punter: "Go on 'ooky lad, go on 'ooky!"

Somebody actually calls out for Transmission...

Barney can be heard quietly testing out his melodica playing!

BS: "Excuse my rather large embarrassing melodica.. I have got a small one, but it's not the size that counts, is it? Okay, this is Love Vigiantes."

Song plays. Good version.

BS: "Woo! I didn't realize my voice was so high."

Isolation

BS: "It's a bit hot, innit it? [heavy guitar riffing and feedback]

Audience member calls out "Hooky!"

PH: "Yes...was there something?"

BS: "Okay, we're gonna reach back into the annals of history now. This is sung by Joy Division, it's called Isolation."

BS: "'ak You"...song closes out.

Your_Silent_Face

PH: "No...do I wanna know how big and how fucking ugly you are? NO."

BS: "This is another one that features my instrumental prowess on the melodica. I learned it at school. Very interessting fact. Ok."

Song starts.

BS: "We're playing all our old favorites tonight. Jump up and dance to 'em."

Hooky, et al. help with the "Why don't you PISS OFF!".

(at the end)

BS: "Thank you. I've always liked that song..."

[note: some versions have KW1 and Turn My Way transposed]

Turn_My_Way

BS: "Okay, I'm afraid we're got time to inflict you with some of our new songs. This is called 'Turn My Way'." Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, hang on...boys, hang on...featuring Billy on vocals, well done..."

(audience members cry out "Billy Corgan on vocals!", which is to whom Barney address "well done to", as well as a "c'mon Barney, lad")

PH: "He's very shy."

BC: "All right guys..."

A portion of the performance of Turn My Way made it into the 511 DVD, very cool. Sounds like a tape edit at the end, odd considering this is the 21st century and this was supposedly a DAT recording..

BS: "Thank you."

Close_Range

Edit in the tape. Nice drum intro.

The mp3 version cuts off at 4:07.

BS: "Thank you, that reminds me of when I used to be a punk."

Touched_By_The_Hand_Of_God

BS: "Oh my, it's hot. Especially down here. Touched By The Hand Of God."

Hooky sings one of the "It belongs to you" refrains. Also some wah-wah guitar in the earlier part.

BS: "'ak you."

Bizarre_Love_Triangle

PH: "This one is for your hopeless romantics..."

BS: (at the same time as Hooky) "Do you know how...do you know how fucking hot it is up here?"

Audience member cries out "How hot?" (presumably the guy that's been heckling throughout)

BS: "I tell you, it's hotter up here than it is down there. [mumble] You'll find out cuz you're gonna be on this fucking stage at the end of the show. Okay, here we go."

(after)

BS: "Thank you. Woo!"

True_Faith

More "New Order!" chants.

BS: "Thank you. Having a good time? Not supposed to happen at our gigs, yer out of order!"

The opening bass sounds absolutely massive.

BS: "'k you! Wonder where that came from? I see you all getting into it a little bit now..."

Temptation

BC: "Um..."

PH: "You'll have to scream a little louder."

BS: "Whoo. Oh yeah, this is Temptation."

You know the audience is singing along...and this is a "last fucking time" version too.

BS: "Whoo...thank you...wicked, man. Ok, Hooky, you were standing on the the bloody half of the stage as well..."

Tape fades...then the last sentence above is repeated.

Love_Will_Tear_Us_Apart

PH: "Hey, he gets all [hot] that I'm enjoying meself. Still a miserable twat, isn't he? (think he's talking about Bernard, not Corgan!) "Come over here."

BS: "How about we all get started tonight...Billy."

Hooky yells out "C'mon!!" during the second chorus.

BS: "Thank you. Oh, that's the end? Thanks a lot, you've been a great audience!"

Bass feedback at the end.

Encore

Ruined_In_A_Day

BS: "Sorry but Hooky had to put some Savlon on his ass. Only joking! We've enjoyed this so much we'd play the whole set again for you..."

PH: "...But you've gotta pay again, so c'mon."

BS: "One two one two..."

Audience member (sounds like Alex!) calls out "Hooky, 60 Miles An Hour". Somebody else says something, it's that presumably what Hooky is responding to.

PH: "No, it's about 120 at the moment, how's yours?"

BS: "Okay, let's go."

They play a nice version.

BS" "'ak you."

_60__Miles_An_Hour

PH: "Ehh, this one is for my daughter Heather, it's here first day of work today, she did very well."

BS: "Ok, this is 60 Miles An Hour."

Which they go ahead and perform...ends in a howl of feedback and wah-wah.

Blue_Monday

BS: "Eh, thank you. Okay, this really is our last song. I wanna see if you can guess what we're gonna play. Someone said Blue Monday. Yes, you're right. See me after, and I'll give you a prize."

(Heh, that was classic)

BS: "Actually, it's called FUCKING Blue Monday now cuz I'm FUCKING sick of it. Only joking."

Hooky exclaims during the bridge "must be me!" Corgan's guitar can be very faintly heard throughout.

Song ends in bass feedback and a synth wash.

PH: "Good night every-body!"

And that's it.

Penis references, slaging off Blue Monday, audience putdowns, they've still got it, folks!

NO: 28 JUL 01 Fuji Rock Festival - Japan

Transcription of streaming webcast...the video's not very watchable, and the audio is muddy and monaural, given low encoding bitrate (24kbps for the music). Still, way better than nothing.

Needless to say, the transcription of this one was particularly difficult. Hopefully, I can get my hands on a higher quality version at some point in the future.

Assuming the webcast aired the performance in sequence, the song order was the following (giving the song titles as listed):

Atmosphere
Crystal
Regret
Love Vigilantes
Isolation
KW1 (Your Silent Face)
Slow Jam
Turn My Way
Bizarre Love Triangle
Close Range
Touched (Touched By The Hand Of God)
True Faith ('98)
Temptation
Love Will Tear Us Apart

(encore)

Ruined In A Day
60 Miles Per Hour
Blue Monday

BS: "Hello, we're New Order. With our new guitarist... [and ?word? ?Phil Cunningham?] (can't make out exactly what he says here)

Atmosphere

BS: "And...we're gonna start off with a Joy Division song. It's called Atmosphere"

PH: "For all the girls at East/West, thank you."

The synth has a interesting shimmering effect. Annoyingly, Bernard whoops a couple of times, although this was more pronounced at the Shoreline performance (31 Jul 01) than here.

Song finishes...

BS: (Whoop!) Thank you. Thank you. Great to be back in Japan after all this time. Jerry, can't hear the top of the kit too well, and can you turn the gate up on my earphones."

The webcast differs from the setlist in that Slow Jam doesn't appear here but later on, after KW1.

Crystal

BS: "All right, from the very old to very new, here's our latest single, called Crystal."

They play the 6+ minute extended version rather than the more abbreviated version played at the West Coast gigs.

BS: "Thank you, thanks a lot."

Regret

BS: "That was all right, wasn't it. It wasn't shit, anyway? And, er, from very old to very new, to just a little bit old, this song's called Regret.

BS: "Make...[can't understand this part]...the quick."

The end of this song gets flubbed somewhat.

BS: "Eh, hank you. Come to think of it, that's not a bad song either."

Love_Vigilantes

Melodica playing, f

BS: "Okay, we right, we right, yeah..."

PH: "You all set, Billy..."

BS: "Billy-o!"

PH: "He's nervous tonight, he's not played in front of big crowds often, so you have to forgive him."

BS: "Okay, let's go"

Song ends with bass feedback, as Bernard 10q's.

Isolation

BS: "Okay, this is a Joy Division song, it's called Isolation"

The song is performed.

BS: "Thank you. Domo Arigato!"

BS: "Ok ok, having a good time? We're having a fucking great time here in Japan, it's a great country. Who said that flattery will get you nowhere? Me."

Hooky says something off-mic.

Your_Silent_Face (labelled KW1, naturally, on the setlist)

BS: "Okay, this is your Silent Face, get the DJ to turn the fucking music down over there, you twat."

Bernard busts out with the melodica! I personally welcome the return of this song to their live set.

And it looks like somebody turns down the vocals on Barney when he says "piss". (part of the 'Why don't you piss off?' lyric). The audience recording is of course unimpeded.

Slow_Jam

BS: "All right, we're gonna play a song...okay, this is a song off our new album called Slow Jam."

Nice feedback at the end.

BS: "Thank you!"

Turn_My_Way

BS: "Okay, this song..next song features Billy. This song features Billy on vocals, and is off our new album, called, eh... what's the new album called, Hooky?"

PH: "Get Ready..heh heh."

BC: "Get Ready..yeah"

[some trading of 'Get Ready's passes between the band members]

BS: "Get ready, get ready, yeah. And it's 'Turn My Way'!"

(at end)

BS: "'ak yew"

PH: "The boy done good!"

Bizarre_Love_Triangle

BS: "Okay, we're gonna now play something that you all know and love...hopefully love. It's called Bizarre Love Triangle."

After the first verse, Hooky yells out "C'mon cheer for Phil!"

Close_Range

BS: "Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa...I'm wrong again, I'm wrong again... uh...fuckin' hell. ...it takes you out here. When you get to our age..."

PH: "Fuck off..."

BS: "Alright, this is another one off our new album, but you're sick of hearing these new songs you've never heard before... one day believe you me, you will come to love them...it's called Close Range, take that fucking capo off now."

I like this one quite a bit.

BS: "Thank you, thank you. Yes, Roger, I didn't notice that was the wrong one."

Touched_By_The_Hand_Of_God

BS: "Okay, the next one is called Touched By The Hand Of God...and it's about Hooky's bass guitar. There Hooky, a rare compliment, a rare compliment."

PH: "Very rare and few in between, but I fucking loved it!"

(at end)

BS: "You're copied my chord there. Yes, what do you want?"

PH: "The switch to the other [two words] fucking broke that one."

[Not sure what this was about]

True_Faith

BS: "This is...er, True Faith. New version. Hope you like it. We do."

Hooky squeaks and mutters quite a bit during this one. "C'mon, you bastards... for the Viking!" or something like that.

At the end:

BS: "Thank you. Yeah! Let's go for it."

Temptation

BS: "I need my special guitar for this one."

BC: [can't make out what he says, think it starts with 'Let me...']

BS: "Temptation."

He starts out with a 'woo woo' along with the beat, before the opening guitar bit.

They play it. All their Temptations these days feature Barney counting "1, 2, 3, 4!!" before going into the last break.

BS: "Thank you." Guitar chords.

PH: "It's very quiet, isn't it?"

Crowd yells.

PH: "What's the matter, scousers got yer bag?"

Love_Will_Tear_Us_Apart

BS: "Eh, this song is called...ah, I can't remember(?)...it's something about love... Love...Will...Tear...Us...Apart."

They play LWTUA.

Hooky yells "Here we go!" at the 1:24 mark. He also yells out, "Turn up my mic, Andy!" at about 3:30, "Andy" again ten seconds later, and another "Here we go!" at the 3:53 mark.

BS: "Whoahhh...thank you very much, you've been a great audience. See you in sixteen years!" (He laughs when he says this)

I guess Barney had forgotten they played Japan in 1987, which was only 14 years before.

The punters start to chant for New Order...somebody strums a bass... then general clamour...and more chanting...before NO take the stage again.

Encore

Ruined_In_A_Day

BS: "How did you know we were going to do an encore? [noodles on guitar] The lead gui-part...guitar part in this song is very, very difficult, so if we play it out of tune, please bear with me."

Actually, this is a really good version. Nice guitar work, having Corgan and Cunningham around helps.

BS: "Woo! Thank you. I cannot stop saying 'Woo', heh heh. Why do I do that?"

_60__Miles_An_Hour

BS: "Okay, this is eh, a song called 60 Miles An Hour, off our new album called Get Ready."

Initial ascending guitar riff before the sweeping synths preface the track.

BS: "Thank you very much."

PH: "God bless you."

Blue_Monday

BS: "Okay, you might recognize this one. So, I'm not going to tell you the title, so you can decide for yourself which one it is."

Huge cheers when the opening beats kick in, of course.

A couple of whoops and a whistle make their way in before the vocals start. Lots of silliness on stage here, not the least of which was Bernard's freaky dancing.

BS: "Thank you, good night, great to be back in Japan. We really enjoyed it! Thank you."

The maelstorm is Blue Monday continues for a minute more before ending in gigantic bass feedback, followed by Hooky throwing down his instrument and walking offstage.

Announcer: "You were great...we loved it.!"

Then he goes into Japanese...the only phrase I can make out is 'New Order'. Any speakers want to translate?

NO: 31 JUL 01 Shoreline Amphitheatre - Mountain View, CA Area One

I attended this performance. What I most vividly remember was this girl who was doing a very intimate lap dance for her partner, who unfortunately couldn't be persuaded to stay beyond New Order's set (she wanted to stay, he wanted to get busy). The last I saw of this couple was him walking out, with the girl flipping him the bird as she chased after him.

No, I'm not making this up.

Another highlight was the punk with a Low-life shirt, who had scrawled on the back, "Fuck Moby". Ace.

Some reviews...

Date: Wed, 1 Aug 2001 15:34:32 -0700 (PDT) From: Marc Joseph
Subject: (Fac33) Mountain View Show

Sound:

Have to agree with Fernando. The sound was very poor. The levels were definitely set for the bands on after New Order (Outkast and Moby). The difference was so great that on some songs it was almost like comparing AM radio to CD sound quality.

The vocals were set too low until three and a half songs in. With the exception of Hooky's bass, all of the sounds ran together. Couldn't hear Bernard's guitar on many songs (e.g., TF). I was at the bottom/middle of the lawn section. Perhaps the sound was better up close? Kind of doubt that.

The band knew that sounds levels were screwed up, and were constantly (Bernard, especially) pointing to the side stage to make changes (or even requesting changes on the mike during songs). Bernard made a comment after the fourth song -- in the middle of which they adjusted the vocals sound level -- something like "...well, at least half of it didn't sound like shit..."

[Editor's Note: this comment seems to be missing from the CD I have of this gig...nor do I recall him making this comment.]

I've not heard the complete album. I did listen to the sound clips and the downloaded Fuji concert. The sound at the Mountain View concert, especially of the new songs, was, not surprisingly, much poorer than the album clips. But, it was also much worse than the Fuji concert (which was actually pretty good).

[Compared to Reading '98, which I also was fortunate to attend, the sound was on a completely different scale -- not a fair comparison.]

I realize that at a festival with little or no soundcheck time, that it's difficult/impossible to get the sound levels correct. At the same time, though, I wonder. Did the New Order sound at the show help or hurt their chances for being successful again in the U.S.?

Without decent sound levels for the new songs (and even most of the older ones), does it just reinforce the "80's band" label in the U.S.? In my mind, it doesn't, but I'm not the majority.

Song selection:

New Order is known in the U.S. by the masses (i.e., most everyone not in the orchestra section) by five songs: BLT, TF, TBTHOG, Temptation, & BM.

They had to play those songs. The difference in broad audience participation was significantly higher during those songs than all the others. I would've loved to have taken a poll of the audience to see how many people first realized it was "that" New Order when BLT was played.

(LWTUA also got the audience's attention. Along with In a Lonely Place, they were two songs that had good sound balance. Best two songs of the day, IMO.)

Song order:

I was hoping they'd change the order from Liverpool and Fuji. Starting with Atmosphere in a half-filled outdoor amphitheatre with the sun setting just didn't seem right. Whoops didn't help.

Energy level:

Hooky was very enthusiastic. Even hopped off the stage during Blue Monday. Steve and Phil were into it. Bernard was hopping around and seemed very enthusiastic. He also, though, seemed a little peeved about the sound.

The orchestra level audience was very enthusiastic. To the balding guy in the French blue long-sleeve shirt, I hope you drank lots of water afterward. You must of sweated about a gallon of liquid.

Billy Corgan's involvement:

Although it's true he didn't necessarily do a lot on stage, his presence meant a lot. He received very loud/positive recognition when Bernard introduced him and when he lingered on the stage at the end. Even looked like he signed an autograph from the side/front of the stage during a lull in a song.

It's been said before, but his presence will mean a lot in the US market. Turn My Way will get significant airplay, because of, in large part, him. He has a very distinctive voice (whether you like it or not) and the masses will instantly be drawn into at least that song (and perhaps like it and try the whole album).

Atmosphere (not the song):

New Order is not a day-time outdoor band. The difference in atmosphere (along with the sound) of Moby's show was startling. I realize that Moby's been doing his show for a while now -- very rehearsed, highly produced, etc. -- but it had impact (whether you like his music or not).

A light show, a full venue, and darkness to help people focus on the stage (as opposed to talking on their cell-phones & walkie-talkies, commenting on the people walking by, screaming to the ushers for glow-in-the-dark thingys to hang around their neck, etc.) make a world of difference. Even playing one hour later (in the Outkast slot) would have made a BIG difference. But, with a full tour commitment, it was right to have Outkast slotted there.

(Funny side note: They turned on the smoke machine -- IN BROAD DAYLIGHT. Bernard disappeared several times while singing. Not the cool floating haze like Reading '98. Looked like a dust cloud had descended upon him. After a few songs, Bernard said something like, "Turn off the fucking smoke machine. You're killing me.")

All that said, I'm still very glad to have been there and grateful that New Order came back to the U.S. I wish that I could go to the LA event to see if they're able to improve the sound by then. I very much hope they can come back again and tour in some mid-size venues (e.g., Fillmore in SF).

Sarge isn't a 'big bloke' at all. He's about 5'6? But he's mean as f---, suppsedly. Head of security at the Apollo, I believe, and has only ever acted as security for one act before - Barry Manilow! And he's defo not Hooky's brother, just a mate.

4 of my mates managed to get their mugs into the Frisco audience photo in Q magazine but me and the Mrs were to the right of the stage so don't feature. If the cameraman had panned more to the left there was a big X of St George in the audience held aloft by some lads from Slough and Sunderland.

Transcription:

Sound is clear (being sourced from a DAT). Despite my initial report, there are no dropouts in my copy (sorry gaobest!)

BS: "Hello everyone, we're New Order, it's great to be back in the States! [bass chords] Please welcome our guest guitarist tonight, Billy Corgan. Please welcome Phil...Phil Cunningham. Well, you like Joy [Division]?"

(my copy of the gig cuts out after the word 'Joy')

Atmosphere

BS: "This is a song called Atmosphere."

PH: "One Two Three Four"

BC: "Yo...yo...(echo)"

Barney gets "whooping cough" during this song. Most people find this affliction annoying during what are supposed to be downtempo numbers.

PH: (to roadie offstage) "Jerry...my foldbacks are still not working... Can I have more guitar in the side fills, please."

BS: "Thank you...whoo! Thanks a lot, thanks a..."

Regret

BS: "Ok, this is a song called Regret."

Opening guitars are mixed way too low and Hooky's bass comes in out of time. The sequenced hi-hat is high up in the mix. A fairly rare botch-up.

BS: "Yo! Jerry, a bit less on my guitar, please, a bit more of the sequenced drums, sequenced shit."

(he's being sarcastic, of course)

Crystal

PH: "You're all right, matey[?]. _____ _____ the fucking amp is coming out[?]

BS: "Okay, this is our new single. It's called Crystal"

(audience member yells out 'Who's playing that?')

Kick drum is very loud here...and the vocals kinda low.

BS: "Oh...thank you...whoo..."

Love_Will_Tear_Us_Apart

PH: (plays note) "This is for you all old-timers. And you young timers. Every living fucker in between."

BS: "Okay, this is Love Will Tear Us Apart."

Ends up being somewhat of a singalong.

About 3:12, Hooky exclaims "Here we go, Steve!"

BS: "Thank you! It's one of those old songs, but we can do even better than that! Just bear with us. You're in for one hell of a...eh, a trip."

Your_Silent_Face

BS: "Okay, this is an old song called "Your Silent Face."

And indeed they do much better. Again, the melodica makes its appearance, and there's some improv...melodica jazz, anyone? My copy has a pop/crack at 3:58.

BS: "Yo! 'ak you. Whoa..oa..oa...

(audience member yells 'Ceremony')

Turn_My_Way

BS: "This is a new song...off our new album Get Ready, features Billy on vocals, and also...he plays a lovely solo in the middle of it."

BC: "Take my hand...and don't let go"
(last part he chuckles through)

BS: "And don't let go".

About 3:08 in, Barney cries "Yo! Phil".

I guess being around all those hip-hop acts is rubbing off on Barney, yo!

Nice "thought that I was right" refrain in this version.

BS: "'k you! Yo!"

(audience member yells 'Ceremony' again)

Bizarre_Love_Trangle

BS: "Okay, after that, of course we're gonna play some of the _____ you already know. This is called Bizarre Love Triangle."

BS: "Jerry....[whistles]"

They play the song.

BS: "'ank you...[groans]"

PH: "Fuck. Can't see me tuner, and sounds like there's something wrong. [plays bass] Nah, it's just me, being a lazy...Salford bastard. Like jazzy here, man."

Touched_By_The_Hand_Of_God

BS: "This is Touched By The Hand Of God."

BS: [3:33] "One Two Three Four!"

Another dropout at 4:41.

BS: "Thank you. Andy, will you turn that fucking smoke off, it's driving me mad! I'm a confirmed anti-smoker, cigarettes are bad for you!"

(more calls for Ceremony from the audience)

PH: "Haha...you got told off, Andy. Hehe."

BS: "Apologize for that one, a very slip of temper on my part..."

(recording cuts out briefly)

True_Faith

BS: "Okay, this is true faith...new version."

BS: [0:50] "Oh, bassline"

PH: [0:54] "Here we go"

BS: [1:13] "More bassline"

Hooky makes weird noises at about 5:15.

BS: "Thank you."

Arthur Baker intro

BS: "Please welcome...our producer Mr. Arthur Baker, stood right there in the audience. Hello Arthur! Guy with the beard and the long hair. Looks a bit like Rasputin. He's got a big dick just like me."

Temptation

BS: "well, you're laughing at (him?) anyway. Okay this is another song, it's called Temptation."

BS: [5:37] "Oh, it's the last fucking time..."

BS: [5:52] "One Two Three Four!"

BS: "Ohah! Thank you"

(yet more calls for Ceremony from the audience)

BS: "'nk you. Fucking M...a bit tiring up here."

_60__Miles_an_Hour

BS: "Okay this is eh, eh, called 60 Miles An Hour, it's off our new album. Hope you like it. Hey whazzap Billy, c'm...an old friend back here."

They play the song, and finish.

PH: "Not bad, was it?"

BS: "'k you."

Blue_Monday

BS: "Hey, this is Blue Monday"

PH: "Yo, get that bass a bit louder, for there's a man in Manchester who can't hear it!"

BS: "No one can set _____ _____" [whistles]

BS: [1:42] Weird noise.

BS: "Thanks a lot, you've been a great audience, it's great to be back in the States. This time we're here to stay, Keep on Truckin'!"

Outro...clapping...people wanting more, the usual.

NO: 02 AUG 01 Thunderbird Stadium - Vancouver, BC

Same set as Shoreline 7/31 except LWTUA moves to later in the set before the encore...and True Faith was omitted... in my opinion the performances here are better, not to mention the banter!) However, I heard that the conditions they had to play in (rain/sparse crowds) were less than ideal.

Intro

(a bit of right channel distortion, clears up by the start of Atmosphere)

PH: "You fookin' boo, then we'll kick yer fookin' 'ead in."

On SR version, you can hear a bit of conversation, including GB with "What did he say?".

BS: "Hello, we're New Order. Please welcome to the stage...(Phil says "hallo") our new guitarist, Phil Cunningham, from England. And the most obnoxious man in rock, Stephen Morris! Oh yeah, Billy Corgan as well. And Peter Hook. (Hooky: "Heeey") And there's our roadies..."

GB (taper): "He's in a good mood."

(somebody notes that Barney's in a good mood...which based on what I've read on Ceremony wasn't the case at all)

Atmosphere

BS: "Here we go."

PH: "1-2-3-4."

Barney continues with whooping, but it's less pronounced than the Shoreline performance.

BS: "Thank you."

PH: "Hey Billy, your sister's in."

BS: "Thanks a lot."

PH: "She's got that coloring set you gave her for Christmas."

Regret

BS: "Ok, this is a a [stutter] a song called Regret."

The levels are more reasonable here than in the Shoreline version, which was plagued with technical difficulties.

BS: [whoop] "Thank you."

Somebody cries for Ceremony.

BS: "No, not playing Ceremony tonight...because Ceremony fucking sucks!"

(lots of laughter...maybe this is a snide allusion to the mailing list!)

http://worldinmotion.atinfopop.com/4/OpenTopic?a=tpc&s=3334038731&f=9334038731&m=1124085831

Someone like me reports a slightly different wording:

"Only once, this year in Vancouver. I loved it, it was a dream come true. My favorite moment was when somebody yelled "play Ceremony" and Barney responded "I will play it for you, yea right, Ceremony F**king sucks" I just started laughing. If anybody knows Barney, they will know that is just his style of humor. Also Peter was very Interactive with the crowd. I hope they come to the west again!!!"

BS: "We're gonna play our new single, however, because we all want you to buy that one, we don't want you to buy Ceremony."

Crystal

BS: "We want you to buy our new single Crystal, and it sounds just like this."

An exuberant "Yeeoooww" during the "keep it coming" parts. Also some good thrash guitar soloing during the break, concluding with another Hooky "Yeeoooww". The stereo seperation shifts a bit...

BS: "Thank you. Jerry, can you take the backing down a touch, please."

PH: "If only we could, we're not allowed to by the musician's union." (talking at the same time Bernard introduces the next song)

Your_Silent_Face

BS: "Okay, this is called Your Silent Face."

Turn_My_Way

BS: "Thank you. Okay, we're gonna subject you to a new song now, it's called Turn My Way, and it's all...all Billy Corgan's fault."

BS: "Thank you."

Somebody says "There's a little hole right here."

Bizarre_Love_Triangle

BS: "Bizarre Love Triangle. I heard you! And we're gonna play just for you, the guy in the blue T-shirt and the yellow bit there, what's your name? (punter cries out name) I feel like I've known you all my life. Here we go."

Touched_By_The_Hand_Of_God

BS: "'hank you. Okay okay okay, can anyone guess what we're gonna play next. [folk scream out Blue Monday, of course]. Apparently not."

PH: (interrupting) "I told you to watch your half..."

BS: "Well, listen and you've caught it on two. I'm ready when you're ready, Roger."

Good riffing on this one. I love how Barney's vocals are so sensually flat, and then they kick into high gear!

BS: "Thank you."

PH: "So slippery up here you can'tt do anything...I dunno...you Americans and your weather."

(The crowd quickly corrects him, mock booing mixed in with laughter)

Temptation

PH: "You'll have to forgive me for that one, just like I forgive you."

BS: "Ignore what Hooky was saying, just listen to me. I'm the voice of truth. This song is Temptation."

BS: "Thank you."

From: http://worldinmotion.atinfopop.com/4/OpenTopic?a=tpc&s=3334038731&f=9334038731&m=1124085831

'Someone like me' reports:

"Your right, being my first New Order show, I would think anything of New Order was cool. I will admit that Vancouver looks like it was one of the worst shows next to Germany so far on this tour. I'm guessing because of the weather, is the reason True Faith was off the set list.

I totaly forgot about Peter calling us Americans. (Not that is a bad thing right about now). But just to let everyone else know. Peter said "You Americans are all the same" And I was one of the people who screamed "were Canadian" Then he said "I will forgive you, if you will forgive me", Then Barney said "Don't listen to him listen to me."

It was funny. I hope they come to the west again."

Love_Will_Tear_Us_Apart

BS: "This is a song that we've never played in Canada before. It's called Love Will Tear Us Apart...I think. Something like that anyway."

Feedback squall from one of the guitarists.

BS: "Get on with it!"

Hooky yells out, "Let's go, let's [something] rock!"

Good version.

BS: "Thank you. An oldie but goldie."

_60__Miles_An_Hour

BS: "Now we're gonna play something that'll make you want to kill yourself. Straight after you've heard it. Our speciality. It's called 60 Miles An Hour".

Pretty raucous version, Corgan does backing vocals here to I think.

BS: "Thank you. Whoa. It stopped raining as well, no it just started again. Sorry. Anyway, we like the rain in England, I'm sure that you like it too. Cuz no fucking choice have we really."

Blue_Monday

BS: "Okay, this is our last song, it's called 'Brue Monday'. My favorite."

(somebody in the crowd sarcastically comments 'Yeah, right!')

They play Blue Monday, which comes clattering to a halt.

PH: "Good evening, Vancouver!"

NO then depart

The between-set music comes on, and an interesting conversation between the taper (GB) and his companion (JV) can be overheard:

JV: "They didn't play True Faith."

GB: "They didn't play True Faith, that's right. I was like annoyed. I was like, 'Wait...where's...'.

JV: "Is that the only one they didn't?"

GB: "Yeah, they played all the other songs from Sh...from Tuesday."

JV: "You know, It's kinda interesting, though, because they've changed the set...the order of it."

GB: "Yeah, they moved...Joy...Love Will Tear Us Apart to the end. I was impressed, I didn't think they'd be capable."

JV: "No..they...I think most people are really into them."

GB: "Yeah, people here are really liking it."

JV: "Well, I was really surprised that Regret came on."

GB: "And everyone knew Regret."

Plenty of reports from this one...looks to have been the best US gig so far.

Pictures from the gig: http://y42.photos.yahoo.com/chris_mealy

Source: tape from Waterrat (Anthony)...unfortunately, sound is very hissy and muddy, but it's good enough for the job. :-) Also have a CD from GaoBest...a different source, which sounds like a digital master, but is also muddy, with very loud kick drum. I suspect this was due to the acoustics of the venue. According to GaoBest, he believes this was taped by ASw.

Transcription

Atmosphere

BS: "Hello, guess who we are? We are New Order. Not played in Seattle for a while...of course, this isn't Seattle. We're going to start off with a Joy Division song called Atmosphere, which we've never played in Seattle."

They did play in Seattle once before, on the Technique tour, and unless their setlist was remarkably different there, Bernard, amazingly enough, may have been accurate in his recollection.

Crazed fan yells out "I love you!!!" at about 2:20 in (Waterrat). Bernard whoops shortly thereafter.

Regret

BS: "Thank you. Thank you, it's a long time since we've played that. 24 hours. This is...[can't make out rest, but it doesn't sound like 'Regret' was mentioned]". Oddly enough, the last line isn't even audible on the GaoBest copy.

Crystal

BS: "Woo! OK. All right. this is our new single, it's called Crystal, please all go out and buy it immediately!"

This perhaps was the best-played Crystal so far.

BS: "Thank you!"

PH: [in reaction to fans shouting out titles, I presume] "Nope, try again later!"

Love_Will_Tear_Us_Apart

BS: "All right, we're gonna hear a new...I am...another Joy Division song now, and it's called Love Will Tear Us Apart."

PH: "One...C'mon Billy, fucking hell...one, two, three, four!"

They play LWTUA.

BS: "'k you...you come over, eh?"

BS: "Let's hear it for David Beckham...Let's hear it for Manchester United! [another pause] David, the guitar isn't working."

PH: "We're not allowed to chat with you during this intermission." [or something to that effect]

Your_Silent__Face

BS: "All right, here we go, this is Your Silent Face."

NO play KW1.

BS: "Thank you very much [very slurred]. It's great to be back in America again. See some sunshine. Take some drugs! Meet a few ladies."

Turn_My_Way

BS: "Okay, this is a song called Turn My Way faturing Billy Corgan on vocals...and guitar solo...me on capo...Hooky, your bass is feeding back out."

Which they perform.

BS: "Thank you!"

Bizarre_Love_Triangle

BS: "Okay, this is Bizarre Love Triangle."

Doesn't really sound any different than the million other times they've performed this tune, though it was reported that Barney was off, rendering one of the choruses without vocals.

BS: "'k you. Thanks a lot."

PH: "You're very kind."

Touched_By_The_Hand_Of_God

BS: "Okay, this is the song that's gonna make [Hooky?] put down, it's called Touched By The Hand Of God."

The timing was definitely off for this one, with Bernard coming in a bit early.

When the song ends, some girlie yells out "We love you Billy Corgan!" and start chanting "Billy Corgan...Billy...Corgan". !@#$% (Waterrat)

BS: "Absolutely beautiful place you got here for us to play...it's a real pleasure to be here. [looking out over horizon] Where's Seattle?"

BC laughs.

BS: "Which direction is it?"

BC: "Over there."

Some girlies yell out "We love you Billy Corgan!", covering up the reply Hooky made. !@#$% :-) (Waterrat)

PH: "Who's gonna..." [all I can make out]

BS: "Stephen, you're...[?]"

True_Faith

PH: "I'm ready...

BS: "Okay, this is True Faith."

Temptation

BS: "'k you. We actually finished it! Okay, I need my badass guitar to play this song. It's called Temptation."

That Girl: Billy, Yeah! Screams. Shut up already, we get the point. (Waterrat)

Some scuffling on the right channel during the beginning of the first verse.

BS: "Thank you."

Guitar being strummed.

BC: (softly) "Thank you very much".

I don't hear the edit between the end of Temptation and the start of the encore...it could have been than New Order never really left the stage. Would appreciate any information.

_60__Miles_An_Hour

PH: "Ah, must be all you sweaty bastards playing havoc with our tuning."

BS: "This one's called 60 Miles An Hour, let's go. Get on with it, Roger, or you're sacked!"

PH: "Ooh...[last phrase a mumble]"

Blue_Monday

BS: "Is Roger here? Must have startled him[?] This is Blue Monday. Hope you like it as much as I do."

Some fool calls out for Ceremony. :-)

Some silly audience members start going "whoo whoo", in the fashion of some contempory urban music hit. ;-) (both Waterrat)

BS: "Thanks a lot, you've been a fucking great audience. Thanks for all the people than came over from England. Manchester United! Manchester vibes in the area!"

I'm dead tired, so tonight I'll just say this: That was a great show. My life is finally complete. I'll post more about it tomorrow. I also snapped a film rolls worth of pics. I'll get those developed tomorrow and hopefully have them online Sunday or Monday.

Like I said in my last post, the show was great. My girlfriend and I made our way into the crowd as soon as the Roots left the stage. After a few minutes we found ourselves about 10 feet from the stage, almost directly in front of Hooky's mic stand. It became apparent quickly that most of the people in the crowd were there waiting for Outkast (who were on after NO) But we did manage to meet a few nice people who were there just for NO. In the words of one fan I met, "I paid $70 for New Order. I could give a shit about the rest of the bands."

After about 30 minutes of waiting, I turned to say something to my girlfriend. As I turned back around, there was Peter Hook looming above me, arms crossed and staring blankly into the crowd. Soon the rest of the band were on stage and they were playing Atmosphere. I've never been a big fan of the Reading 98 version, but tonight it sounded beautiful. Bernard held back on all the wooping that apparently has plagued previous gigs. I can't imagine NO doing a better job of this song. It really was perfect.

After that Bernard stepped up to the mic and made some comment about how he loves America. Then he said, "Here's a song we haven't played in 24 hours." Regret. At times this has been my favorite NO song, often on repeat in my cd player. Tonight it didn't dissapoint. Everything about it was great. Best part however, sometime during the song a beautiful rainbow formed over the hills. I'm pretty sure NO had something to do with it.

Next on the list was Crystal. They started out with the piano/synth intro from the extended version wich really got my hopes up (love the extended instrumental at the end) however as soon as the intro was over it became the edit. Apart from the keyboard bits in the break, Phil Cunningham was down playing guitar with Bernard and Sick Boy (Corgan, who looked like he was dead he was so pale). Crystal, for lack of a better term, really "rocked" tonight. Nobody in the crowd seemed to know the song, but after the song a number of people were making comments about how much they liked it. Bernard also made the point of explaining to the crowd that Crystal was their newest single and they need to go buy it "right now". Maybe he didn't realize that it hasn't been released yet...

From here on my recollection gets of the set list gets a little fuzzy.
90 degree sun, tightly packed crowd and the fact that I had been walking around for five hours at ths point had all led to fatigue. Here is a list of the rest of the songs (if anyone has a better recollection of the set please let me know):

Atmosphere
Regret
Crystal
Love Will Tear Us Apart
True Faith
Your Silent Face
Bizarre Love Triangle
Touched by the Hand of God
Turn My Way
60 mph
Temptation
Blue Monday

Overall it was a great show. My life really is complete now. LWTUA was fantastic, as was most of the set. Sick Boy sounded horrible on Turn My Way. Several people in the audience actually started booing very loudly when Bernard introduced him for the song. Peter looked like he was having the most fun on stage. Bernard kinda looked pissed (probably cuz he started singing early on three different songs, which led to a silent chorus on BLT). There really wasn't any interaction between the band members, though. Hooky caught on to the fact that the security down front had to look at the crowd the entire time, so he started swing his bass within inches of their heads. Pretty funny. He was straddling a bunch of amps and lights as well. He really was the star of the show.

I know I've probably missed some things but oh well. I just woke up. I'm getting my film developed today, so I should have some pics online Monday or Tuesday. Oh yeah, I'd like to give a shout out to all the ass-hole Outkast fans that started crashing their way through the crowd before NO was done. F**k all of you. Especially that ass that elbowed my girlfriend. Hope I didn't punch you in the face too hard.

Great show, thanks New Order. Hope too see you soon!

Laters,
Jeff Sheldon

I actually wrote this last night after getting home, but sent it from a different IP forgetting that it wouldn't get through. Oh, and I was the one in the aque/turquoise blue plaid button up short sleeves with the black rimmed glasses for anyone that was there. Jeff Sheldon was that you I was right next to?

bob

In two words: FUCKING BRILLIANT. Now, I've been waiting 15 years to see them, so maybe just getting to see them is great, but it also offered all the opportunity in the world to be disappointed.

I can't give you the set list, I don't remember, but they played about what they played at the other shows--including True Faith (which they didn't play in Vancouver?). The only song that didn't sound great was Turn My Way. Could be that I'm just not familiar with it. Oh and Corgan's voice on LWTUA really grated on my nerves.

Great crowd, even the couple of big dunder heads that were just there to see Outkast and were standing at the very front. Completely motionless, clearly not New Order fans. In between songs I said to one of them "Since you aren't a New Order fan, and I've been waiting 15 years to see them can you let me stand there?" He looked confused for a second but then moved and I was right in front about 5 feet from Hooky! I had my friend's digital camera and got about 60 shots. Not all of them are good, but some are absolutely great. He's going to download them and put them on a site and send me the URL so I will let everyone know. I couldn't really get any good shots of Stephen because of the sun (absolutely blinding at times) and a particularly large security guard who wasn't too accomadating about moving to the side a few feet. But I got some great shots.

Temptation was brilliant, as were YSF, Blue Monday, Regret, LWTUA and Atmosphere. My gods, Atmosphere. It was so amazing hearing it. But again, the only song that I thought didn't sound good was TMW.

I'm sure someone else can give a better review than me but I thought I would pass mine on.

well, i was about 10 feet from hooky as well. seems like at least three of use list members were all right together there, and didn't know it. when a couple outcast people tried getting through, i said, "that is not going to happen", and me and my three friends made an impenetrable wall. the show was spectacular. even bernard forgeting when not to sing in BLT, and hooky kicking down the light. it was amazing.

Am stuck in Seattle airport with a few hours to kill so thought I'd send a quick mail to the list. If anyone's going to the LA show look out for a Union Jack with Ceremony written across it near the stage front. I should be somewhere near there. Pop up and say Hello! George Saunders from the list should also be in our vicinity as we've seen him at all shows thus far. The 'Ceremony' isn't actually in reference to this list but we badgered Barney at Vancouver airport to play Ceremony and like to remind him of our request! Pointless I know, but +there you go! If you can't see a Union Jack we're also meeting 3 English lads who've got a huge Cross of St George with them. They should be able to point you in my direction if you ask for Allen!

Shows thus far have been cracking, with only really Vancouver being a letdown. Rained constantly there and we couldn't drink at the festival - what was that all about?! Personal hilite for me is having Hooky write 'Peter Hook says f*** off' across my Shoreline setlist when we ran into him at San Fran airport. Charming bloke.

Looking forward to LA, Allen & Co.

> It became apparent quickly that most of the > people in the crowd were there waiting for Outkast

too bad, just a few more feet to the left and you would have been in friendly territory...

> After about 30 minutes of waiting, I turned to say something > to my girlfriend. As I turned back around, there was Peter Hook > looming above me,

hookys "rock star" stances were brilliant. he cracked me up. and, in my estimation, he knew exactly what he looked like. there is a guy who looked like he really enjoyed the show. during one song, when billy wasn't doing anything, he walked over and started his "rock star" posing in front of him. then he started nudging him with his bass. billy couldn't keep a straight face then.

> I can't imagine NO doing a better job of [atmosphere]. It really was > perfect.

yes, yes it was. a slow but excellent start.

> After that Bernard stepped up to the mic and made some comment > about how he
> loves America. Then he said, "Here's a song we haven't played > in 24 hours."

see, i thought he said that in reference to atmosphere. he's like, "we've never played this song in seattle before..." sounding all sentimental before the song. then he finished, after the song, by saying, "we haven't played that song in a long time." as he stepped away from the mic, "It's been 24 hours."

> part however, sometime during the song a beautiful rainbow > formed over the
> hills. I'm pretty sure NO had something to do with it.

well, i hope so. but some people seemed more excited about the rainbow then new order. get your priorities right!

> Bernard
> also made the point of explaining to the crowd that Crystal > was their newest
> single and they need to go buy it "right now".

Here, I thought he said, "This is a new song, so don't leave right now." I thought he was joking with the fickle fans there to see the greatest hits collection and nothing else. crystal was good, but 60mph was better. i actually thought turn my way was better than crystal, but i'm a smashing pumkins fan as well, so what can you do?

> Several people in the audience actually started booing very > loudly when Bernard introduced him for the song.

i heard cheering, maybe one's opinion of billy shapes how you hear people respond to him...

> Peter looked like he was having the most fun on stage.

coudn't agree more.

> Bernard kinda looked pissed (probably cuz he started singing early > on three different songs, which led to a silent chorus on BLT).

hilarious! the song was still great, billy laughed at him, while stephen and hooky looked a little nervous for a second... speaking of bernard, we couldn't agree on this on the ride home: does he know that he is one of the worst dancers of all time? i think (giving him the benefit of the doubt as a long term fan) that he knows he can't dance, so he plays it up real good. real good, if you know what i mean. but my friends think he is just terrible, and worse the more he gets into it. i don't know. at least, either way he was enjoying the show enough to get into it. i'm glad you could tell he was having somewhat of a good time. but the running in place and goofy side-back-kick-half-foot jumping?

> There really wasn't any interaction between the band members, though. > Hooky caught on to the fact that the security down front had to look > at the crowd the entire time, so he started swing his bass within > inches of their heads. Pretty funny.

This was hilarious as well. Didn't you see him accidentally kick the light down? he just kind of looked at as if wondering what it was doing in his way in the first place. sometimes he would stare vacantly into the upper reaches of the crowd, as if disappointed they weren't into it as much as the horde of people just in front of him. but then he would turn back to us and get into it again. it all worked together quite well.

> F**k all of you. Especially that ass that elbowed my girlfriend. > Hope I didn't punch you in the face too hard.

don't know if there are too many of them on this list... still, i couldn't agree more.

> Great show, thanks New Order. Hope too see you soon!

yes! yes! yes!

okay, now i'm done.

ps - oh, i also noticed numerous people back stage singing along with the new order songs. that was kind of cool.

I just got back from area: one in los angeles. I kept reading about how after seeing NewOrder people would say, "now my life is complete". Well, that's exactly how I would describe how I felt after seeing NewOrder tonight!! They were amazing. You could tell Bernard was completely into it. Hook of course was all over the stage. Even Corgan was laughing and smiling. It also seemed like they had packed in the stage area by the time they came on. The tent must have been fairly empty when NewOrder was on.

During Blue Monday, some guy jumped on stage and scared the crap out of Bernard when he snuck a pic of himself with his arm around Barney. It was actually kinda funny. I met a list member there too. April, AKA (digital girl?) was rocking out in front of me and even got a pick, a drumstick, and the set list!! I stopped by the tent after and Oakenfold was on right after NewOrder. He was playing crystal remixes!!

Here is what they played (but probably not in the right order):

Atmosphere
Regret
Crystal
Love Will Tear Us Apart
Your Silent Face
True Faith
Turn My Way
Bizarre Love Triangle
Touched by the Hand of God
60 mph
Temptation
Blue Monday

I'm super tired. Bye.

Albert.

The highlight of the show was NEW ORDER (Gillian Gilbert included) with Billy Corgan joining Moby for a great version of NEW DAWN FADES.

More review of the show soon with some backstage experience/on stage/dressing room...Thanks to Peter Hook for his kindness.

BTW: was great to meet some member of the list

Bizzare Love Triangle

Great to meet some you folks: Met Vincent and Torbjorn for dinner in Santa Monica the night before, hooked up with David Sultan at the show and met George Saunders, Al Jarvis and friend immediately after the set finished (they were right behind us).

Managed to worm our way to about ten deep back from the stage, good view of everyone except Steve for most of the time. We also set ourselves up on the Hooky side (better action). Everyone was enjoying themselvesthe crowd up front was pretty into it, I think out area was a hotbed of activity more than any other perhaps. Sound was overblowing the capacity of my eardrums, but balance between the instruments was pretty decent I thought. TBTHOG was a standout for me- Phil's guitar part sounded like regimented Andy Gill style and added something new. I really liked Crystal and 60 MPH, thought Turn My Way was pretty weak relative, but not bad- just maybe was more suited for an Electronic album. Pretty decent length set- with the new members, they weren't improvising with their set at all of course, Phil and Billy had a list of songs they had to learn and Bernard wasn't going to lead them into a run of Ceremony, despite repeated requests. Bernard did a dedication to some fans from Texas- what was that about? Seemed like the group to my left had something to do with it. Billy Corgan had quite a following, apparantly, and Bernard was careful to give him credit several times throughout the gig- at the end, both he and Peter Hook gave him hugs, Peter apparantly trying to crush his ribcage in the process. During Blue Monday, some guy ran on stage and pulled what looked like Bernard's earmonitor and threw it into the crowd. Also worth noting was Bernard's careful introduction of all the new tracks (which helped with my list). Quite an experience. The Joy Division songs didn't inpact me as much as I would have expected, but Atmosphere was pretty awesome. The dedication in Steve's drumming and emotion on his face was obvious.

Bernard seemed pleased with the crowd, said it was good to back in LA etc. There was a joke about Billy getting all of the chicks, but then Billy responded that they were only sleeping with him because he promised they could have Bernard afterword- Bernard said he wasn't too excited about Bernard's sloppy seconds.

How David managed to sneak in a full size 35mm SLR camera is beyond me.

Also- who had the NW ORDER license plate? Anyone?

It really was a fantastic experience, my first time seeing them play, as well as my friend Chris, who showed me the Ceremony list in about 1992 or 1993.

Hope all of you folks manage to take them in some day.

Actually, the guy jumped on stage with a point n shoot camera and tapped Bernard as he was looking away. Right when Bernard turned around, the guy put his arm around him and took a picture. Bernard had this freaked out look on his face, as anyone would, when he turned around and say this guy pointing something at his face.

You guys must have been a few people behind me. I was a few feet from hooky and could of actually just reached out and touch his bass!! April, another list member, actually did. So I guess she got hooky's attention cos he handed her a pick, drumstick, and set list to her. It was kind of funny because there were a few people there in the front that were obviously waiting for outkast. Half way into the NewOrder set they were dancing/bouncing just as crazily as the rest of us..great fun!

John Frye then replies:

We saw Hooky paying a lot of attention to that area and saw him hand off the pick and drumsticks. April must be hot, eh?

Hello all!
I just returned from work where I got 4 hours of sleep last night and went to work at 6am. I wasn't going to post until later on today because I am so damn TIRED but after Albert mentioned my New Order experience (or should I say Hooky experience?) I thought I should post now.

First off I feel very grateful that this was a General Admission event otherwise I wouldn't have been as close to the stage as I was. We got there at 3:30 and immediately went to the stage and stayed there until 11:30 when Moby was done with his set. It was actually hard when Outcast was playing their song "Miss Jackson" and many were moshing behind us and smashing us! I really HATE the music but I wanted to keep my place for Moby. I also feel very fortunate to have met some incredible people there as well. Thanks Albert for being such a nice person to me, and tell your friend to stop being so quiet :P I really wish I would have met more of you guys but hopefully they will come out here next year and we can really meet up!

Well enough about my day, the concert I have to say was THE BEST DAMN CONCERT I HAVE EVER BEEN TO IN MY ENTIRE LIFE! I really didn't know how I would react to them being there in person so close to me! It was phenominal to say the least. As I said before I was lucky enough to be right smack in front of the Hooky himself. He was the most energetic of the band, he was getting the crowd crazy. I also managed to get his attention and managed to get his pick (handed to me by the way), his drumstick right after he jammed on the drum machine in Blue Monday. I also got a set list, which is a real good thing I hear. He even let me touch his guitar :o) :o)

I really couldn't believe I had gotten his attention, even enough for him to stare at me and actually sing "I will take care of you like I always do" from 60mph to me, I mean he pointed at me, looked at me, and sang that line. Every time I hear that line I will get the chills!! Who knows, it could have had something to do with the Get Ready shirt I had on!

Ok, about the songs...Atmosphere was absolutly wonderful..Regret wasn't as good live as on album, but I still enjoyed it very much..Crystal was played very well and they all really got into it, basically they got into the new songs a lot..LWTUA was the best I have ever heard it, although Billy did look shy singing it with Peter..True Faith was brilliant, always one of my favorites..Your Silent Face was one of the best songs, I loved how Barney played that piano thing he blew into (sorry, I don't know what it is called)..I almost cried during Temptation..and the rest were just incredible (this is getting long now)

At the end of Moby's set I was very suupprised to see GILLIAN there, she was actually there.. it was awesome to see her im person and with the rest of the band...another suprise was that John Fruciante from the Chili Peppers was there....very wonderful...

The last thing that made the day THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE was that some guy gave me a free t-shirt in the parking lot as we were searching for the car.

This whole day was a dream and I couldn't ask for more, well maybe to meet them :P, I don't think another concert could come even close to this unless I do meet them someday... well a girl can dream can't she!!

Well that is my LONG post, I hope I didn't bore anyone but I had to express my wonderful NewOrder experience to all.. I do feel very lucky.

Thanks again NewOrder and expecially Hooky for making me feel so good!

-Transcription-

Taken from CD from digital master. Just the right amount of crowd noise. Thanks GaoBest, as always.

Intro

BS: "Hello, we're New Order. And we're on fire. Please welcome to the stage, our guest guitarist, Mr. Billy Corgan. And over here, our new guitarist, with the leather trousers, Mr. Jim Morrison...sorry, Phil Cunningham."

Atmosphere

BS: (strums guitar) "Okay, this is Atmosphere."

They play Atmosphere. Good version, light on the whoops.

BS: "Thank you for an old Joy Division song which we're very proud of. It's gotta be one of the most beautiful songs ever written. To the second-most beautiful song ever written, also coincide...coincidentally by us, Regret."

Regret

The metronome makes its appearance here. Is it a musical effect or just so Bernard can keep time? I think it's the latter, given these are being taped near center stage.

BS: "Thank you. Thank you very much."

PH: "Here, I [can't make out last word]..." (in fact, I can't really make out any what he said). Barney interrupts. He does that a LOT.

Crystal

BS: "This is our new single Crystal. and if you go out and buy it immediately, I'll sleep with you...each and every one of you personally, and so will Billy, and so will Hooky. (BC laughs) We'll do anything to sell ourselves."

Which they play.

BS: "Thank you."

Love_Will_Tear_Us_Apart

Feedback.

BS: "All right, thank you. This is a song I don't think we've ever played here before, but then again, I could be lying. It's called Love Will Tear Us Apart.

PH: "Give a great [ ?] next to our friends from Texas. 1-2-3-4!"

Hooky shouts "Let's go!" about 1:55 in.

BS: "Thank you....thank you, thank you. We're gonna slow things down a little bit."

Your_Silent_Face

BS: "Okay, this is Your Silent Face".

Some interesting feedback, and the melodica solo is cool. Small skip about 4:58 in.

BS: "Thank you."

Some girl yells for Billy to take off his hat, twice.

BS: "Billy, what's going on between the stage here with those girls?" I never knew...never knew you were that sort of guy."

BC: "I...I tell these girls that if they sleep with me, they can sleep with you."

BS: "Sloppy seconds."

BC: "That's assuming I can..." [Bernard interrupts him]

Turn_My_Way

BS: "All right, this is Turn My Way, featuring the sex stud himself, the star of the show, Mr. Billy Corgan, on vocals!"

Which he sings...

BS: "Thank you!"

Bizarre_Love_Triangle

BS: "Okay, we're gonna play a song you all know now. It's Bizarre Love Triangle."

BS: "Thank you."

Touched_By_The_Hand_Of_God

BS: (ugh) "Okay, this is another song. it's called Touched By The Hand Of God."

Starts out with the same sort of feedback that was present in YSF, but even more audible. Awesome.

BS: "'ack you."

BS: "Woo...Billy's girl got this sign that sign that says 'Please sleep with me or give me a guitar pick.'"

Girl yells out again "Take your hat off!"

BS: "What's that say?"

PH: "We're going to get the pick off of that side...[last two words mumbled]".

BC: "It's cheaper to, uh..."

BS: "It's cheaper, right."

True_Faith

BS: "True Faith"

As usual, it's the Perfecto mix.

BS: "Thank you."

PH: [Groans]

BS: "(grunts) I think we've had enough now, it's getting a bit hot up here."

Temptation

BS: "It's called Temptation."

Which. they play.

BS: "Thank you."

_60__Miles_An_Hour

BS: "Okay, here's a track from our new album, new album's called Get Ready, and this track is called 60 Miles An Hour. It's a protest against the speed limit. Not a very good subject for a song, but it sounds pretty good.

PH; "Whoa, thank you very much California, it's fucking great to be back! I suppose I gotta say goodbye to you now Billy."

BC: "Bye." (the freak fan's still calling for him to take his hat off)

PH: "Only PT...bye Hooky"

BS: "Billy, I like to thank you sincerely for helping us out on this tour, it's been a pleasure having you."

BC: "Thank you."

BS: "All the rumors about you have been completely unfounded. You are a really nice guy. Billy, put it there."

I assume they give each other five.

BS: "And you know, underneath that hat, he's even got hair!"

BS: "Bye Hooky, bye bye Hooky. Lippy, you're a nice guy as well, Lippy, come and say hello to the audience. Lippy, c'mon. Lippy, c'mere, c'mere..."

(Lippy is 'Phil' backwards)

Blue_Monday

BS: "All right, this is Blue Monday. Get into the groove, you motherfuckers!"

Phil (I presume) screws up on the keyboard parts a couple of times. Good stretch of feedback about 5:00 in.

BS: "Thanks a lot, it's great to be in LA again. You've been a fucking great audience, and what else can I say? Thanks, Billy! And thank you Lippy! Thank you Lippy!"

NO: 11 AUG 01 Mungersdorfer Stadium Cologne Germany

Review from Ceremony list:

Date: Mon, 13 Aug 2001 00:44:36 +0000
From: al.jarvis
Subject: (Fac33) Cologne Mungersdorfer stadium

Bizarre one this. Bought a standing ticket to be as near to the Order as possible but got into the stadium around 4pm (first band 5pm) to find out they'd already filled out their quota of fans stage-front so - after my initial disgust - settled down in the sun to sink beers and watch the bands from a bar at the far end of the pitch, what seemed like a million miles away.

Got talking to a German neworder bod though (dressed in Temptation 98 t-shirt) who was convinced we could genuinely get down the front after Ash's set. JJ72 and Ash came and went so me and 2 of my party made for the left hand side of the stage in order to gain access to the inner sanctum. 2 burly security guards were having none of it and refused a 100Dm bribe so we took another 20mins to wade through the assembled bodies (it seems German concert goers set themselves down in one spot for the entire duration and don't even need to move due the wandering Becks salesman replenishing their every liquid need) and finally made it to the right of the stage to be faced by a fresh-faced security guard on his own. And he wouldn't even accept a 300Dm (100 pounds in real money!) bribe to let us through! Of all the cheek. But just at that point the infamous Alex gave me a tap on the shoulder, and so there we were - me + 2 and Alex + 6, 10 English Neworder fans in all - marooned behind a barrier, more than yards back from the stage - when the band finally appeared.

Atmosphere started with Primal Scream drowning out the band, still playing on huge video screens either side of the stage. And it was all downhill from there. Absolutely NO-ONE else was up for this one. No atmosphere whatsoever. Cue Barney: "Are you all having a good time [pause] Cos it doesn't fucking look like you are." A huge Mexican wave started during 60mph and got a bigger cheer than the band had all evening. Blue Monday finally got the German heads nodding but all in all this gig seemed a totally pointless exercise. If ever a gig deserved World In Motion finale, it was this one. That might've ruffled a few feathers. Robbie, on the other hand, rocked the venue - he is the ultimate showman. Anyone who can get 60,000 Germans singing along to English-language songs and have 30% of them bedecked in Union Jacks is a winner in my book. A sound bloke. Quote of the night "I used to be in the Spice Girls [pause] Well, two of them". Boom boom. Not a bad day out, all in all, just a bit 'different' as New Order gigs go.

Set - same as America, minus TMW and True Faith.

Hi!

just returned home from the cologne gig - my first ever new order gig... (waited 11 years... hm, blabla...) anyway, it was more than an experience, already suggesting before that it will be a tough show due to the audience (best question I got asked by a teen girl - do you know who new order are? we think they are a boyband...) - incompetent organization (the already mentioned thing about getting into the first rows... you have x robbie fans sitting there the whole time and no chance due to wristbands been given out to them to get in there...), so we had to enjoy the band from the second circle + I have never ever seen a more igonrant audience before...

setlist has already been mentioned - lovely choice to let your silent face stay in the set (my bet was this would be out...) + leaving most of the people there totally bewildered. barney started to take the piss out of the audience + add more lovely comments as the gig continued. (do you like dance music? nah, you probably like marching music), temptation is a song about all the lovely things in life that we never do like poking in the nose... hm, and blue monday is about the soft-sex movies on german pay-tv in hotel rooms... hehehe, by the way, phil got a plastic bottle thrown at him - and at the end of blue monday hooky threw his bass into his amps...

so, you can say, quite a special night, enjoyed it a lot personally - a shame about the audience!!! very intense performance nevetheless!

can't wait for the autumn dates.... Dennis

Excerpt from a London Times article (Paul Connolly) My html preprocessing can't handle the commas in the link, so you'll have to cut/paste if you want to read the full article

http://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/0,,146-2001286578,00.html

Bernard Sumner glares balefully at 60,000 apathetic German Robbie Williams fans in Cologne's Mungersdorfer stadium. "Do you like dance music?" he asks. No response. Even from way back in the crowd I can see him bristle at the lack of reaction. It's clear he's dying to let rip. He can't keep it in any longer and growls menacingly, "Do you like marching music?" and New Order rip into Touched by the Hand of God, one of their huge fund of classics. Backstage after the gig Sumner grins when I remind him of his comment. “That was the least offensive thing that sprang to mind. I had to keep biting my lip. Robbie Williams fans aren't really our audience." Peter Hook, the band's bearded bassist and master of melody, quite enjoyed the show. "As Bernard often tells me, 'You'd enjoy playing in Beirut.' But I like a challenge. After the show Robbie Williams hugged me and said 'Well done, you did well to get through that.' Mind you, Bernard was so annoyed I thought he was going to start World War III." New Order are playing at the request of Robbie Williams, but most of the crowd were probably still at primary school when the band released their last album, 1993's Republic. It's no surprise that the sight of these fortysomethings playing music that still sounds futuristic doesn't stir their hormones.

But for the few New Order aficionados in the crowd the sight of the band dubbed 'the post-punk Beatles' playing again after such a long hiatus is a near-religious experience. They are the most influential band of the past 25 years, without New Order there would be no U2, Primal Scream or Pet Shop Boys.

Transcription

As advertised, the source that I have sound like they came from the soundboard [note: it's probably FM] And also as advertised, the between-song comments here are especially good. i don't know how sincere they are, a lot of it is from Barney knowing the Germans understand not a word he says.

Since picked up the full FM version that was posted to STG by booomboom.

Atmosphere

Not complete, fade-in.

BS: "Thank you. Erm, all [can..?] me and Hooky. Can I have a bit more keyboards and drums, please."

(off-mic) BS: "Turn it down a little bit."

Regret

BS: "Okay, this is a song called Regret. Hope you like it."

They play Regret.

BS: "Okay, thank you. Hey Jerry, if you can cut Hooky on side fills a bit, that'd do me a big favor. And I'm not hearing Phil too well."

Crystal

BS: "Okay, this is our new single. It's called Crystal. Hope you like it so much you go out and buy it. We need your support."

PH: "Thank you" (may be Phil)

BS: "One two one two one two."

Love_Will_Tear_Us_Apart

PH: "This is another old song, ...a fucking well-deserved rest. One two three four!"

BS: "All right."

(at end)

BS: "Thank you."

Your_Silent_Face

BS: [muttering] "...very professional...".

BS: "Hello. Are you having a good time here in Cologne? It doesn't fucking look like it. I've soon you best sort your fucking lives out. [guitar chords] And we're gonna play something you don't like. This is called Your Silent Face.

Bernard calls for Hooky right after the synths start up.

During intro...

BS: "This is very Bavarian song. Think of the mountains in Bavaria. Skiing! Naked saunas! I was gonna say something else, but I won't."

Barney whoops before the first verse.

And says "Thank you" in Deustche.

Bizarre_Love_Triangle

BS: "Okay, this is a song called Bizarre Love Tri...[mic cuts out]. Oh, fuck. And, uh..."

Barney whoops during the intro.

BS: "'k you. Very polite of you."

Touched_By_The__Hand_Of_God

BS: "I see you got a group there in Cologne? Do you like dance music. No? All right. Do you like marching music? Okay this is a song called Touched By The Hand Of God. [he giggles a bit delivering this line]" He ahhs and makes a couple other Barney-esque noises, including a grunt, whoop, and whistle

This version is a bit shambolic.

BS: "Thank you very much, very polite audience tonight."

PH: "Yes, you can." [dunno who he was responding to] Plucks bass a bit.

Temptation

(punter can be heard crying for "Blue Monday" right before Barney starts speaking)

BS: "Okay, this is a song...you probably have never heard of, actually looking at you, but in England [Hooky laughs] it's a very famous song [Hooky gasp-sighs]. It's called Temptation. [Phil chuckles]... It's about doing bad things, which obviously you never do, like picking your nose, and forgetting to cut your toenails."

They play Temptation.

BS: "Thank you. Thank you very much. Very kind of you..."

_60__Miles_An_Hour

Electric guitar chord.

BS: "Ok, this is a...a new song off our new album, which is called Get Ready. It's called 60 Miles An Hour, which is the speed limit in England actually. So if you ever go to England, be careful how far... how fast you drive, because it's a lot faster than your speed limit, which I believe I believe is, eh, only a hundred kilometers an hour. Very interesting point there."

Hooky blows the intro.

PH: "Unh..."

Hooky's bassline is a bit different than the recorded version. You can also hear Phil Cunningham on backing vocals I think.

BS: "Thank you. Fuckin' 'ell, you liked that one? What did we do right there? Is there something...and you never heard it before, neither?"

Hooky strums a bit more.

Blue_Monday

BS: "Okay, you might have heard this hoary old chestnut we're about to play, it's called...it called Blue Monday. It's about the porno channels in German hotels. Which are absolutely disgusting."

All the audience claps along to this one.

BS: "Thank you very much. Thank you very much. And, eh...you [might as well know?] we'll be back again soon. Keep your dick in your pants, bye bye!"

NO: 24 SEP 01 At New Order's Rehearsal Studio

This was performed to commemorate John Peel's forty years in radio. New Order were originally scheduled to attend, but due to the event being postponed, were not able to be there at the rescheduled date, so instead, they performed a song on videotape and sent it in.

The date assigned represents the original air date, the song was probably taped a few days before. Available in Realmedia and as a .mp3.

For the first time ever, New Order (as New Order, that is) perfrom Transmission!

(Although Daniel Butt reported that there were rumors that NO was soundchecking this song during some of their '98 gigs)

BS: "Hallo, Jon, here's to...ah, 40 years in the business. Ehm, if you've not played our record 20 years ago, how long is it Hooky?"

PH: "It's a long time, I know that..."

BS: (continues) "If you've not played our record all those years ago, we wouldn't be here today, so thanks a lot.

PH: "Here's to the next 40 years, mate!"

BS: "Alright, this is a Joy Division song called Transmisson, and no spitting, please."

What's interesting about this performance is the locale, which looks to be at the Morris' (or is that the Gilberts'?) Macclesfield farm.

I think that's Phil Cunningham in the background (to the left behind Barney) playing guitar, he can only be seen a couple of times. It looks like Gillian wasn't present (or playing) during the performance.

I'd really like to know how he hooked up with New Order.

My opinion is that this is a pretty damn good version. No whoops... well, only one.

And as noted on the Ceremony list, there's indeed a poster of Touched By The Hand Of God hanging from one of the walls.

BS: "Thanks a lot, John. Keep on rookin'!"

THE DAWN OF A NEW ORDER WORLD

NEW ORDER started their UK tour on home turf last night (October 4) with their first major MANCHESTER show for nearly three years.

The band played the first night of a two-night residency at the Manchester Apollo to a suitably packed crowd of local fans and friends. Excepting a minor appearance to launch next year's Commonwealth Games, the last time they played in the city was New Year's Eve 1998.

The performance, at almost two hours in duration, was unusually long for a
band notoriously hostile to playing live. The band opened with recent single 'Crystal', and while the show was heavy with material from current album 'Get Ready', all three decades of their career were covered, with hits like 'Bizarre Love Triangle', 'True Faith' and 'Blue Monday'. The set also included three Joy Division songs - 'Transmission', 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' and 'Atmosphere'.

The hometown crowd were typically wild, with vocalist Bernard Sumner forced to ask people to move back after 'True Faith' because of fears of crushing at the front.

He joked, "Free drinks at the bar on me. That's only if you go now." Bassist Peter Hook responded "Fucking hell, that's a once-in-a-lifetime offer!"

Billy Corgan, who had accompanied the band on their US tour and at their comeback show at Liverpool Olympia in July, did not appear. However, Hooky acknowledged absent keyboard player Gillian Gilbert, calling into the crowd, "Are you alright G? Are they looking after you in there?"

New Order return to the Apollo tonight (October 5), then play Glasgow Barrowland (7-8), before playing three nights at London's Brixton Academy next week (October 10-12).

The next single from 'Get Ready' has been confirmed as '60 Miles An Hour', released on October 22.

'Rock legends return - New Order

WE hope you enjoy it, mused Bernard Sumner as New Order, the city's most enduring musical export and probably its most influential, took the stage for their first home-town gig for nearly three years. It would have been impossible for anyone in the sell-out house not to have enjoyed it.

They haven't changed much New Order were always the rock band dance fans liked and the dance act rock fans could get into but at the same time, they have, which explains why the audience comprised as many 40-somethings who remember them first time round as it did 20-somethings.

With former Marion man Phil Cunningham standing in for Gillian Gilbert on keyboards and guitar, that was also the case on stage.

The new album Get Ready is a bit mixed, but it does include a few gems. One such is Crystal, which kicked off the show. Its thumping bass-line allowed the leonine Peter Hook, whose bass is so low-slung these days it scrapes the floor, to show off his idiosyncratic playing style.

Whereas most bands treat gigs as a chance to showcase the new stuff, New Order, as they get older, are exhuming more and more of the Joy Division back catalogue, with a suitably sombre Transmission being the pick.

But what everyone wanted to hear were the New Order classics. Bizarre Love Triangle received a curious acid house treatment which didn't quite come off, while Touched by the Hand of God was touched instead by a dollop of funk which sounded little more than work-in-progress.

The highlight was unquestionably a majestic True Faith, with Temptation a close second. They could only finish the gig with one track, and a triumphant Blue Monday for which Gillian appeared duly concluded the show.'

NO: 05 OCT 01 The Apollo Manchester

Writeup of main set only. The copy of this in my possession doesn't have the listed encore tracks.

AW: "Arthur Baker...just give us a couple of minutes, couple of minutes while the guys get ready cuz I just want to tell you something about these guys. It's not all dollars and dimes. I really love these guys, I love 'em. I love Hooky's legs, I love Bernard's bottom, and I love Steve's mouth. Eh, you listen...you know they've got their own musical influences, and we're very honoured tonight to have a guest here that's gonna be with 'em that's kind of launched them on their career. I want to give you a big Manchester welcome to Mr. Max Bygraves! Max."

"Max": Alright, it's not Max, it's Ken. To a fucking good time and let New Order rock the fucking house!"

AW: "So give them a welcome....it's JOY DIVISION!"

Chants of 'New Order' can be heard.

Crystal

BS: "I must apologize for, eh, Hooky's boyfriend's speech there. It's the big guy, it's the portly guy, he likes 'em big. Anyway, we're New Order, you're the audience, and this is Crystal."

He says this through some nice-sounding feedback.

Bernard messes up on the first line and/or the vocals weren't turned up on time.

BS: "Thank you. Wooo!"

PH: "You're very kind.

BS: "Well..." (or some similar interjection)

PH: (at the same time, making it hard to hear what Bernard said) "It's girls, not boys."

Transmission

BS: "It's not like chanting for New Order, because this is a Joy Division song, it's called Transmission."

Regret

BS: "Okay, we're gonna play you a New Order song. This is called Regret."

Audience member says something in hard-to-decipher brogue near the start. Levels go up around the 2:20 point.

BS: "Thank you. Fucking hard work, this, you know."

Ceremony follows.

_60__Miles_An_Hour

BS: "Eh, this is...this is a song off our new album, and it's called 60 Miles, uh, Miles An Hour, or 60 MPH ...I don't know what that it is in kilometers, I'll let you work it out for yourself."

Your_Silent_Face

BS: "'ank you. So we better chill things out a little bit now, because I don't know about you lot, but I'm getting pretty hot up here. And you know what, I don't like getting hot. I don't think anyone does really, do they? Well, not anyone from Manchester."

A few seconds pause.

BS: "Please welcome our new guitarist, Mr. Phillip Cunningham. Good Northern lad. Although he's too posh for us now, he lives in LA. Stuck up twat. Okay, this is Your Silent Face."

Playing goes a bit askew at 3:30 point.

Bernard doesn't sing the signature lines, but the fans fill it in just fine.

BS: "Thank you very much."

Fans chant...you know what...

Slow_Jam

BS: "Bunch of Manchester United fans in here tonight. (quite a few fans boo, it's mostly City folks) Good to hear it. I'm going to an England match tomorrow. Good to hear it. I think I've run out of things to say actually, you're right. This is Slow Jam, off our new album."

Close_Range

BS: "Eh, this is another song off the new album, it's called Close Range."

BS: "Thank you."

Touched_By_The_Hand_Of_God

PH: "Heh heh he...three guesses [mumble]..."

Punter yells out the right answer.

PH: "Ah, you were here last night, you bastard."

BS: "Pardon? Excuse Hooky's sparkling wit there. He usually starts the swearing at this time of night, don't approve of it myself."

PH: "Fuck off."

BS: "See what I mean? Very...right. This is Touched By The Hand Of God."

Quite a few "woahs" throughout. As well as some good wah-wah from Phil.

BS: "'k you. Did you like the new dance? (chuckles) It's ridiculous, really, ain't it [word].... W've got to do something, don't we, in between singing. It's a bit of a hop, really innit, more than a dance.

Bizarre_Love_Triangle

This song is about Hooky and his boyfriend who came on earlier. Big fat Al. Oh, sorry, big fat Ken, and it's called...Bizarre Love Triangle."

PH: "Truth is stranger than fiction."

BS: "Or soon-to-be boyfriend..."

(at end)

BS: "Ohh, thank you."

Chants of...well...you know...Synth note.

True_Faith

BS: "Where's Hooky gone? He's like a fookin' Jack-in-the-Box, isn't he? You'll have to put a chain 'round your leg."

PH: "It's all my youthful energy, you see."

BS: "All right, this is True Faith."

punter: "One of the best songs...Bernard..."

BS: "Thank you. You know, we never ever ever ever get the end of that song right. And it's Hooky's fault, always."

PH: "You don't mean that, Barney..." [not 100% sure if that's what he actually says]

BS: "Sometimes it's Steve, and sometimes it's Phil, but it's never fucking me."

PH: "We can do it with more members of the band."

BS: "Actually, it's the audience's fault."

Temptation

BS: "Okay, this is a song that you all know and love. It is Temptation."

Love_Will_Tear_Us_Apart

BS: "In your one time, when you're ready.

Blood curdling scream near the end...

BS: "Thank you!"

Atmosphere

PH: "You certainly turned me a [mumble], fuck me. Right, Andrew. Andrew Fisher, we're all thinking about you, mate, this is for you. I hate that fucker...one, two, three, four..."

BS: "Thank you, good night. Been a fucking great audience..."

they dropped rock the Shack after 30 seconds and no Ruined.

Quality not quantity tho'.
Totally blinding best ever I've heard version of Bizarre Love Triangle and the band were totally up for it tonight. Woops and hollars galore. Barney and Hooky having a right old spar between songs, Barney laughing and Steve laughing and singing along as well.

Despite not setting off the metal detectors I was frisked anyway. Glad I didn;t take my minidisc.

Got it in ok to the first manc night..but the band were a bit off at points plus I had a lady with me who insisted in talking during and between songs. ggrrrrrrrrrrrr

met up with Al and Jon and bumped into several other faces from the manc show. Sound blokes the lot of them :-)

Onto tomorrow night we go :-D!!!

As already mentioned by Colin, the Glasgow gig was something a bit special being described by one of the venue promoters as perhaps one of the most impressive gigs he had ever seen.

Ally and myself were left in the enviable position of viewing the bands soundcheck in the cavernous Barrowland along with perhaps only 8 others in attendance. Bernard completed "Rock The Shack" then exited stage left leaving the remaining members of the band to play "Crystal" with a member of the bands crew looking after vocals. A couple of run throughs seemed to please the band then Hooky hit us with "Transmission", again with a management member taking care of the vox.

Hi Ceremony Gang.

Just wanted to share with you my New Order Glasgow experience: (setlist updates at end, if you want to skip my ramble)

I just got back to Boston from Glasgow and saw both shows there. I exploited having a good friend to visit as an excuse to fly over to see my favorite band!! Had to keep up my record of seeing them at least once every year they've toured since 1986. right?!

The Sunday night show absolutely blew the roof off the Barrowlands!!! It was truly amazing. We were down front-center of the stage, and the moment the boys stepped on stage the crowd started hopping. By the end of the first song, we were drenched, but everyone just kept going. Later as the night went on the sweat mixed with tears of joy.

It was quite nice of them to throw in a couple slower songs just to get a break from the aerobics. Bernard and Hooky were totally having a blast, smiling and telling the audience how great we were, and joking with each other about getting old, bragging over who had the better roadie. heh.

Brilliant show!

Afterward I waited around front trying to get a setlist or something cool, but I had to settle for one of Bernard's plectrums. No big deal, probably never even used, but I play guitar a bit so I can use with the pleasure of knowing where it came from!

I have to say, I love seeing NewOrder in the UK. There seems to be more camaraderie. More people know all the songs instead of just the hits. When you're in the pit hopping around, everyone is your Best friend. It's good fun!

hey guys
i'm starting to listen to this gig, my goodness they played "transmission" and it sounds fucking great! I'm so floored. I got this show on Monday and I'm finally having time to listen to it.

i like how before "your silent face" the crowd (at least the crowd surrounding the taper) is chanting "true faith" so my question is whether the entire audience was chanting this, or just a part of the crowd was chanting. Surely someone from this list attended and can advise on this.

Al Jarvis doesn't recall hearing this, so most likely it was only the part of the crowd around the taper.

The Glasgow gigs were absolutely fantastic - knocking the MCR gigs well into second place (imho) - slightly diff. set than in MCR in that the set was a little shorter but the bands performance was phenomenal.

Great to meet many Ceremony boys at the gigs including Deron from Boston who came looking for me after the second show.

Last nights gig was slightly marred by the lack of an encore - something that is being blown way out of proportion by local press & radio & sadly by some greatly misinformed "fans". I was especially happy at last nights show as although it was my last of any major tour, Hooky dedicated "Touched by the Hand of God" to me anouncing that "this is for Kens mate Jonathan - He's on the slippery slope to hell..." before Barney intro'd the song as "Touched by the Hand of...the Promoter" an "in joke" that is best left untold on these pages...

The party at MAS was a bit of a hoot with many of the old boys dancing like loons to the sounds of tracks old and new and most notably The Happy Mondays & Stone Roses.

They didn't do an encore on Monday night. Local radio station, Radio Clyde got lots of calls complaining. I heard some folk saying Hooky got spat at, and Barney too much abuse as well, which put the band in a bad mood.

I have to say, I love seeing NewOrder in the UK. There seems to be more camaraderie. More people know all the songs instead of just the hits. When you're in the pit hopping around, everyone is your Best friend. It's good fun!

So for the Monday night show we decided to chill further back and just enjoy the sights and sounds. I'd already had the ecstatic gig experience, so night #2 was just gravy. It ended up having a very different feel to it from the beginning.

I don't know...the band wasn't into it? the crowd wasn't into it? It was a Monday night so audience wasn't rested and amp'd like they were on Sunday? Don't get me wrong, NO sounded fantastic!!

But they weren't joking around, there were fewer hands flying in the air, fewer Bernard "whoops!" and general banter, etc.

It ended on a bit of a bad note, with no encore and a surly boo-ing crowd.

I thought the show was still terrific, and all they were going to play was blue monday, anyway. But it was definitely a down note, contrary to the mile-high note of the night before. It might be interesting to hear the different shows. Anyone record both?? :)

To top the weekend off, while I was waiting at the airport for my flight, along walked Stephen Morris. What do you know! I gently approached him looking picking out a book to read and chatted with him for a while.

He had no idea (well he was going to tell) about what happened Mon night. And about touring the US, he said "we'll see", though he said they do like to play in CA (where I'm from and will be returning shortly).

So we just chatted a bit, I didn't want to impose too much. His personal assistant had questions for him, etc. Unfortunately, didn't see the others...

Though Arthur Baker was also in the airport, in fact he sat in the same row as me on the plane from Glasgow to Heathrow, just across the aisle. Of course I said hello to him, as well.

Wasn't sure I was going to enjoy them after all this time, but a very chirpy Bernard and a seriously posing Hook-meister made for a very memorable set. I took 3 NO newbies along and they were as enthusiastic as the die hards.

Well, no time for a review at the mo, but the sound mix was rough as hell : Close Range sounded awful and all over the place (I didn't recognise it) True Faith (The intro was near enough the same) and Rock The Shack (just terrible full stop)

For some reason I just knew Barney was going to do the countdown in Temptation!

I agree with Dan's comments on the songs, Close Range didn't really work, and to have dropped BM, TBTHOG and True Faith wouldn't have concerned me.

I'd also almost forgotten Barney throwing his towel into the audience and then asking for it back.

I quite like Turn My Way, so would've been pleased to hear that. Absolutely nothing from Technique or Low Life either - sacrilege!

(he also goes on, in a seperate message...)

I agree with the others - sound was really awful at first - just like a wall of guitars. It did get better though. I don't think I've ever seen the band as chirpy, and to see Hooky roaming all over the place was an oddity - think it even surprised Barney as he told him to go back to his corner. Other good bits of banter were Barney admitting that 60mph isn't really that fast, giving the crowd an introduction to the melodica, and admitting they'd made a hash of RTS before (and promptly doing it again). Liked the cheesy lights going with the colours in Temptation.

First time I've ever seen LWTUA or Transmission, so both made it special.

They even had a female backing singer - whatever next - dancers?!!!

Someone remind me who introduced them? I know it's Alan something...

So, tonight would be great if we could have Dreams Never End or Everything's Gone Green, but I think I may be disappointed!

One last thing - selling Technique t-shirts there?!! Was that remaindered stock?

Agree about the sound, but it did improve, so you should be alright tonight. Funny, cos normally the Academy's pretty good like that. I couldn't hear much of what Barney was saying, but he was certainly talkative. Have to get a boot and find out :) If I'm being hyper-critical,

a couple of the bits of the set are sounding a bit over-familiar now, TBTHOG and the Perfecto style True Faith in particular. I do think they could do some reprogramming. Crystal and (to my slight surprise) 60MPH were both fantastic, really rocking, and it's always great seeing NO do a track for the first time. Ditto, of course, Your Silent Face, although I wish now that I hadn't known they were going to play it. Still, one of my favourite NO songs, and a real treat to hear it - and obviously the same goes for Transmission. No "wooh!" after "we can dance", Michael! In fact, the yelps seem to have an increasingly harder edge. Ceremony and BLT were terrific some great riffs from the Hookmeister. Close Range was pretty much a non-event - not my favourite song on the album, and not a particularly good version. Wish they'd done Primitive Notion instead.

Still, gave me a chance for a breather. No "Turn My Way", thankfully. Went off pre-encore with Barney saying something like "See you in another 15 years. Or maybe 15 minutes", which gave us a clue that we weren't going to be in a Glasgow situation. I really enjoyed "Rock the Shack"! Barney said they always cocked it up, and they did, although it was (allegedly) Hooky's fault. Blue Monday was Blue Monday. "Barney: "There's one song left. Now, which song haven't we played? It was a hit in 1981 or 2 or 3 or 4...") I really think they're wrong if they think they have to play it. Imagine the rection if they did Perfect Kiss, or Procession, or, damnit, Round & Round instead. Never mind - still good to see Hooky pounding that drum thing and chucking his sticks into the audience.

Out of guilt of not paying him enough attention in the past, I spent a goodly time watching Steve last night. The man is a legend. Many thanks to the bizarrely mysterious benefactor who draped a (bootleg) T-shirt over my shoulders as I was tying up a shoelace outside the front and then disappeared. I'm wearing it now. No thanks to the absolutely-off-his-tits goon at the front who flailed about like a drunken Cyberman, refused to allow his legs to support his body and then had to pulled out the front by the bouncers - only to reappear 3 minutes later. Moderate your intake, my man.

(Chris Au says "hey, i was one of guys who helped lift him over the barrier. he wasn't exactly impressed...")

Best moment - Temptation - Barney, "One, two, three, FOUR!"

The sound was loud yesterday, but the vocals were way too low. The new songs sounded shite and the audience didn't really respond, though I thought RTS was quite good. best bit though was Temptation followed by LWTUA, just amazing. I intend to get up at the front 2morro!

Hooky interrupts, can't make it out besides "You...". Bernard talks over it.

BS: "Sorry about that, I ain't got a clue what he wants."

Weird high-pitched female voice says, "Stand on me...I wan't to see 'em!".

BS: "Okay..."

She whines and then says, "Oh, stop it!"

BS: "It's been a while since we've played in London. Probably going back the region of fifteen years."

Female: "Fifteen years."

BS: "But believe you me, we've done some very interesting years in our private time. Hooky's got into Acid, 'en. Phil's gotten into bestiality. Stephen's gotten into the Beastie Boys."

Crystal

BS: "Anyway, this is Crystal."

Levels adjusted a bit downward at about 1:30. The woman continues to scream as if she's getting crushed, it's a bit unpleasant to listen to.

BS: "Thank you! Thank you."

Weird female voice mutters in another language, sounds like Chinese.

Transmission

PH: "That's very kind, you're very kind. This one's for Jane tonight, it's you're birthday, Jane. And we know what every girl wants on her birthday. Phil."

At 2:39, Hooky yells out (off-mic): "C'mon, you gits!"

BS: "Thank you. That was a bit of a surprise, wasn't it?"

Fade-out at this point.

Regret

BS: "I must apologize in advance for the whiteness of my trainers. They're not brand new, but they were a gift from Adidas [drum fill], our sponsors [cymbal crash] this evening. Only joking, we don't resort to sponsorship. Anyway, this is Regret."

(at end)

BS: "Thank you!"

Ceremony

BS: "Thank you very much. This next one, there's a group of English people that followed us around America recently on our tour when we supported Moby and, erm, there's a lot of requests for Ceremony, and this is for them."

A few seconds while they tune up a bit, and then they get right into it.

(at end)

BS: "Thank you!"

_60__Miles_An_Hour

BS: "Wow, it's hot. You want a towel? I've not got any, anyone got one? It's not...anyway...give it back when you've finished."

(this is where he throws his towel into the audience and then asks for it back)

BS: Okay, this is...off our new album, it's called 60 Miles An Hour, it's about not quite breaking the speed limit, but getting up close to it, because we're all rebels, basically."

BS: "Thank you!"

BS mutters something, and then says, "Anyone got a towel?"

Your_Silent_Face

(original CD I have of this recording doesn't tracksplit here)

BS: "Okay, just to show that we're not about just throbbing guitars, this song features a throbbing melodica. If you don't know what one of them is, I'll show ya. This song is called Your Silent Face."

BS: "Thank you."

Atmosphere is missing from my version.

Edit at this point. Tape misses the first part of Bernard's introduction for the following song.

Close_Range

BS: "...a little bit now with a song off our new album called Close Range."

(at end)

BS: "Yo!"

Touched_By_The_Hand_Of_God

PH: (menacingly) "I know I'd fucking jump at you, you tight cunt!"

BS: "We're professionals...tune up...is the first thing. Okay, this is Touched By The Hand Of God...and it's about...God."

Really good version.

BS: "Thank you!"

Bizarre_Love_Triangle

BS: "All I can see are these fucking trainers. Everybody need a little room? I bought them in Glasgow two days ago. Had to do something while I was warbling off. Okay, this is Bizarre Love Triangle, features Ayatollah Hook on bass, Ayatollah Morris on keyboards."

Yes, this is what he actually said, it seems...unless someone can prove me wrong.

BS: "Thank you!"

More loud shouts of NU ODAH NU ODAH...

True_Faith

BS: "You know, no matter how shit you get, it's nice to hear what a great bunch of songs we're written. Don't know if that makes you feel any better, but it certainly makes me feel better. And I'm not being [mutters] and this is True Faith, and we're just start fe...the gigs(?)"

(need a bit of help with the last part)

Intro funk-style guitar part is wretched. Bernard says "Whoa!" and people exclaim a bit...maybe he's dancing again.

BS: "Thank you!"

BS: "Well, thought that was young pants for a minute, Hooky."

PH: "He shouted, he didn't even fight me for that, you noticed."

Somebody cries for Mr. Disco.

Temptation

BS: "Okay, this is Temptation. No smart comments, nothing, just a beautiful song."

BS: "Good night(?)!"

Love_Will_Tear_Us_Apart

PH: "Ready, Bernard. Tell me when."

BS: "Yeah, I'm ready, ready, ready.

PH: "Ok. No, you're wrong. 1-2-3-4!" (probably directed at heckler, not Bernard)

Barney yells "Come on!!" about 1:45 into the track, and Hooky says "Here we go!" about 2:12 in.

BS: "Thank you! See you again in fifteen years. More like fifteen minutes." Fade out.

Fade in.

Some fiddling and tuning goes on before the Order start the encore. Hooky says "Hey Hey", though it could have been Phil for all I know.

Rock_The_Shack

Humourously, the liner notes credit vocals to a "Billy Gillespie".

BS: "Yeah, please welcome...on stage with us, Bobby Gillespie from Primal Scream. We're gonna do a song off our album which he's featured on called Rock The Shack. We've played it six times, and fucked it up every single time. Actually if you wanna spot it, his guitar solo in the middle, let's give it another go. Here we go!"

And indeed they fuck up the intro.

BS: "Hang on...fucked up...whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa. (can't make out whatever is repeated twice after this) Peter, pay attention please! I've gotta wait for you. Here we go, here we go again, start it, here we go. It's punk."

I hold the minority viewpoint that this is the better of two collaborations on the Get Ready album, but you probably wouldn't know it by listening to this. :)

BS: "Yeah! Thank you. Bobby Gillespie, all the way from Scotland!"

Blue_Monday

BS: "Okay, let's see, what song haven't we played yet? It was a big hit in 1981...1982...1983...1984."

PH: "Let's go on, Bernard. Hahehehe."

BS: "This is Blue Monday."

Blue Monday is performed.

Really expressive instrumentation starting at the 5:30 point.

PH: "It's nice to be back, thank you. Good night, London(?) We could play for all bloody night, we're still up for it."

Well night No.2 and, if I'm not mistaken, even louder and better than last night. Not as much banter tonight, but a fantastic atmosphere (that's the ambience not the song!)

Set was same as last night except Rock the Shack was replaced with Ruined in a Day.

I took some pix - if they're any good I'll post them somewhere - watch this space.

If anyone wants to go tomorrow, the scalpers/touts are knocking tickets out at pretty much face value, and there doesn't seem to be a shortage.

Intro

Alan Wise comperes.

AW: "You won't believe it, but the guy up there is Arthur Baker. How we got these people, I don't know. I want to give a big thank-you to Garlic, Garlic who performed before. Before I introduce to you five guys who love their work, they love it, and they're here to love it with you, they're called New Order!"

BS: "Okay, hello, we're New Order. As you know already. We'll start the set tonight with Crystal.

Bit of a dropout at 4:55.

BS: "Thank you! Thanks a lot. Thanks a lot.

Fans cheer out NU ORDAH, NU ORDAH...

BS: "If you bear with us, we're a little bit tired and emotional last night. Well, forget the emotion. This is Transmission."

(at end)

BS: "Thank you."

BS: "Okay, this is called Regret."

Another dropout about 0:50 in, tape tracking issues.

BS: "Thank you."

BS: "Okay, we're gonna hop back to the dark days of the past now. This is probably one of the last songs we wrote as Joy Division, and one of the very first songs we wrote as New Order. It's called Ceremony."

Fans chant out again...

Thank you. This is going to be our new single, which will be found on Top Of The Pops tonight. It's called...yes, we do have two jobs, it's called _60__Miles_An_Hour, or get if you know by phone." (last phrase I can't fully parse)

BS: "Okay, just to chill you out a little bit noew, for my sake, we're gonna play Your_Silent_Face."

Somebody yells out "Hooky" in a slightly muffled voice, dunno who.

BS: "Okay, we're going to keep it low-down and moody now...and then... this is a song, my favorite song actually, Atmosphere."

Which they play.

BS: "We're gonna pick up the pace a little bit now, and uh, this is a track off our new album Get Ready, it's called Close_Range."

Version of the song resembles the 'Dream On' demo more than the rendition that ended up on the album, and is quite stirring.

BS: "Thank you."

BS: "Okay, this is Touched_By_The_Hand_Of_God"

(after)

BS: "That sound should be called 'Fucked' cuz, erm, cuz what have they asked us for, not to mention our manager. Peter, wait till after. He's got bored with me then."

BS: "Right, this is Bizarre_Love_Triangle"

(after)

BS: "Thank you!"

Some guitar noodling between tracks.

BS: "Okay, anyone know what we're gonna play next. One at a time, please. This is True_Faith."

BS: "Thank you. Do you know...we've played, we played how many gigs this week, Hooky? we played fucking six gigs this week, and we've never gotten the end of that song right. You know what, it's always my fault. It is."

PH: "Everything's always your fault."

BS: "Okay. [Hooky laughs] Anyway, we'll make sure we get the end of this one right. This is Temptation."

People "oh, oh oh oh" during the verses.

I like to introduce, from Clingham, our new guitarist. Dawn Zed, there she is, and my new, shiny new Adidas trainers. I always buy Adidas, er, ok, whenver I go out. I find them exteremely comfortable [cymbal crash], and since I've taken up jogging, they're the ones to run in. [kick drum]. Not that I...feel anything. Anyway...what were we doing? Oh, yeah, we're playing a set, aren't we. This is Love_Will_Tear_Us_Apart.

PH: "We're joined by the lovely Dawn, c'mon Dawn, take a bow."

BS: "C'mon, don't be shy, Dawn."

PH: "Woooo! Get right into it, let's fucking go. 1-2-3-4!"

They perform the JD classic.

BS: "Thank you. You're a great audience. Sorry we're a little bit fucked, but we are. Thank's a lot, you've been great!"

Hooky ends on a two-note bass vamp.

A couple of cuts during the pre-encore bit, and then a fade-out and fade-in to the home stretch.

PH: "(I bet?) you've got thirty years in Glasgow and gotten away with it, eh. No, fuck you, you Cockney bastards."

BS: "Oh yeah, yeah...Okay, one two one two. You want your bloody money's worth free(?)...don't you?"

A bit of guitar soundchecking.

BS: "Okay, this is Ruined_In_A_Day."

(at end)

BS: "Yeah! All right, from Ruined In A Day to Blue_Monday. Do you get it? Ruined In A Day. Blue Monday. Dead funny. Dead real funny. I thought."

Bernard yells out something I can't make out at 6:25 of this.

Sadly, though it was just Arthur Baker doing the 2 former tracks, and Hooky giving us 45 second soundbites of the latter 2, Age of Consent at the end of the set, Dreams Never End at the end of the encores. Teasing little minx, that he is.

As for New Order, it was just a runthrough by numbers again last night. Yawn.

Oich oich evil listees.

Brixton Academy on Friday the 12th then.......

It was my 4th New Order gig (Reading, Ally Pally and Liverpool being the other 3) but my girlfriend's 1st. And she was pretty excited about the whole thing in a way whcih made Beatlemania look tame. It took us 5 hours to get from Birmingham to Brixton - mainly due to spending a total of 1 hour in various service stations and hitting London at half past four. And as for the last little leg round the academy - that'll be 200 yards on 45 minutes then!

But, with car safely parked in the multi storey car park and eyes overdosed on people falling off skateboards, off we trotted to the front steps of the academy. After 4 years I finally managed to meet up with Chris Au who, by all accounts, is an all round top bloke. Off we headed to a local hostelry where I suddenly realised that I had been transported into an episode of late 80's Channel 4 sitcom Desmond's. After watching the pub fill up with both types of New Order fans (spotty students and football hooligans), hearing the words "Jonathan Scott" far too often and with Candice "entertaining" random old men with her drunken dancing (she hadn't eaten bless her) we decided to make the short hop skip and jump over to the main hall.

OK, so it was 2 hours until New Order were due to go on stage but we did get to listen to a band called "Haven" (I think) who were "OK" and then we got Arthur Baker "mixing". Ahhhh, now I expect you're all sat there going "no you young fool - he wasn't supposed to be mixing like they do in Gatecrasher and places - go and eat a piece of wood and behave" but I was personally impressed with AB. Because he managed to build up a fantastic atmosphere through his choice of rekkids. Candice and I arsed about with some "hilariarse" hard house dancing while Thieves Like Us was played and a whole host of "Wow - I haven't heard this record since I was this high" type stuff came on. Our apologies to Chris for making it look like you were standing with two spazmongs.

Anyhooooooo. After far too long a wait (it was half 9 by the time they arrived) New Order took the stage and so began the best gig I've seen them play. Not because it was technically brilliant or because the renditions of the songs they did were better than usual - it was just the fact that they were enjoying themselves so much. Candice did in fact behave like a 12 year old girl at a Westlife concert. Now, I'm no expert on these matters but I find it quite disturbing that a 25 year old woman swoons at a fat sweaty old man. But swoon she did and jumped around like Zebbedee when 60MPH, TBTHOG and True Faith made an appearance. We managed to make a small hole for ourselves in front of the dividing railings between the stage and the mixing desk so we had a good view whilst still being able to breathe.

Crystal is a fantastic opening song. BUT if you are going to open with it you need to take out the intro piano. It just needs to open with that guitar assault. Cos that's why Regret works so well to start off with - instant audience connection. Atmosphere was majestic as ever (although Candice finds JD depressing and so pretended to hang herself. I don't think that went down too well with the JD fans behind us!) and Transmission rocked. Close Range was also also a belter. Now there came a small problem though. Earlier in the gig we'd lost Chris who'd run off to the front so that he could get battered and bruised in the infamous New Order mosh pit. Fortunately he arrived back at our little haven of space as Temptation came on. There was I, admiring the cheesey blue / green / grey eyes lighting, bouncing like a mad loon and singing along at the top of my little voice when BOSH - goodnight Vienna. A lack of food, two pints of lager, no water intake and the heat made me pass out like a big girls blouse. No, it wasn't the sight of Hooky's trousers. Honest. So, there's me lying on the floor in the middle of a few hundred people and Candice is trying to pick me up. After about 30 seconds I come round and stand up. "Right" I say. "Lets get to the side so I can get some air" And off we trundle when WHOOMPF down I go again. Yes, I really am that shandy arsed. If it wasn't for Mr. Au being there then I'd have spent the rest of the gig on the floor cos I was literally out cold and NO-ONE was helping at all. Candice said afterwards that the people around us just went "oh look, he's fainted", turned round and kept on moshing. But Chris and Candice managed to haul my carcass to the side and bring me round. There are benefits of going out with a nurse!

Security came and let us outside for a bit which gave me some air and woke me up again. So back in we went just in time for the encore. Anyways, HUGE thanks to Chris for your help - from both of us. Much apologies for interrupting the gig for you and if there is any damage to your funky flashing shirt from me being a heavy twunt to carry then let me know and I'll send you a cheque. Hope you got home OK as well - would have loved to give you a lift but it would have added an extra couple of hours to our journey - evil London traffic! We didn't get back until 4:30 anyway! Was great to finally actually meet you in person - and we'll have to do it again sometime. Especially if you know people up in Shrewsbury - the entertainment capital of England ;-P.

The gig was fantastic though. Gillian and Kim dancing along behind the rest of em as well. And it looks to me that New Order are enjoying themselves so much that there's at least one more album in them. *Fingers crossed*

Fainting Jack

The intro to this gig comes to you from Alan Wise. I was able to match it to this night due to the writing on the monitor stacks.

(from audience recording)

AW: "...no fucking microphone. I can't believe that that's Arthur Baker up there, everyone. Arthur Baker, a round of applause. Arthur baker, the producer. How do we get people like that?"

(the video version starts here)

AW: "Many years ago, I met four young boys, and one young girl. Who had their owns minds they wanted to do it their way. They wanted to do it differently than everyone else. And they came to me and said, "Al, can you help us?". Ha. And now they've done three nights here, and if they could, they'd like to do another six. But can someone, someone tell them where else they can play? Just send a message in to their agent. I want to introduce to you a band that used to be known as, you all know this, used to be called Joy Division, you all know it! And now they got a new name, yeah, they're now called, welcome on stage, those fabulous guys from...New Order!"

BS: "What was all that about, then? I don't understand what he was saying. Hallo. We are New Order. And we're going to play for you tonight a set that's gonna make you jump up and down. Starting with Crystal."

(at end)

BS: "Thank you!"

Transmission

PH: "Thank you. I want to dedicate this one to my daughter, she's three today. God bless her!"

BS: "Thank you. I'd like to dedicate that to Pete Tong as well, whose been a big help up here. Nice one, Pete."

Chants for New Order...

BS: "All right, I'm knackered now. Can we go off?"

Hooky mumbles something I can't make out while Bernard's speaking.

BS: "Can't wait until...[mumble]...a break, young cunt!"

PH: (interrupting again) Eh, John Sims is in the house, Johnny! Get up, Johnny or what, give 'em a break, you old codge."

BS: "I can't wait for the slow ones. All right, this is Regret."

(at end)

BS: "Thank you!"

Ceremony

BS: "Eh, I got a bit more energy tonight, thank God. I apologize for the game last night, it was all my fault. Actually, it was all Bobby Gillespie's fault. Okay, this is Ceremony.

PH: "I'd just like to, eh...24/7 party people..."

BS: "Thank you!"

All right, oh fuck, we dropped down again. Well, I was just going to introduce you to Phil, our new guitarist, but I've just decided to sack him! [drum] What you looking at, Roger? You fucking sack [won't us]?"

PH: "You're not careful, we'll all sack you..."

Bernard ignores him.

BS: "So give him one more chance. All right, it's Phil Cunningham actually. Used to be in a band called Marion. [guitar] Okay, this is off our new album. I'm sure my record company would like to announce that it'll be our new single. Hopefully, you'll all buy it. It's called _60__Miles_An_Hour."

BS: "I Was gonna suggest that all the people up there get up and move around, but we're gonna play a slow one now, so we'll save it 'till later."

More chants of New Order...which Bernard reacts to.

Your_Silent_Face

BS: "That's a horrible tune you know you sing. Can't you think of a better tune? Like New OrDEH! This is Your Silent Face."

At the 2:30 point, Bernard exclaims, "C'mon Hooky[?] [can't make out, delivered in a growl-type voice]" to what I presume must be somewhat deficient playing.

Some strumming at the end, and the sound of a guitar lead getting

Atmosphere

BS: "Well, a small technical problem up here, so please bear with us for a few seconds while we work it out. We're a very professional group, with a very professional set of roadies which are currently working on the problem. There you go! Okay, this is Atmosphere."

PH: "One, two, three, four..."

Tape edit at this pint.

Close_Range

BS: "This is a fast song off our new album, it's called Close Range."

Tape dropout at about 1:35 or so.

BS: "Thank you!"

BS: "Oh, it's got a bit hot now, innit. It's very hot for the time of year. It's October, you know. Being from Manchester, we're not used to the sort of sunny weather you get down here in London."

BS: "Okay, this is...eh, yeah, let's tune up.

PH: "Where's [can't make out]... So civilized, unlike you fuckers."

BS: "All right, Touched_By_The_Hand_Of_God."

Long pause at end.

Bizarre_Love_Triangle

BS: "Fucking hell, it's hot. Then again, I'm a right moaning bastard. Okay, are you ready chaps? Okay, this is Bizarre Love Triangle."

Initial bass note is discongruously loud.

Some piano tinkles.

True_Faith

BS: "Okay, I like...I'd like to dedidcate...another dedication, there's lots tonight. I'd like to dedicate this song to John Sims, who is playing me in the film 24 Hour Party People. Actually, not to him but to his new, erm, little boy Ryan. C'mon, give it a bit! Will ya? Three, ya, you've got two. Just wait until the end, it's just started All right, ok. True Faith."

(at end)

BS: "It's the first time we've ever gotten the fucking end of that song right. Well, I get it right every night, but they fuck it up every night. Whoa."

BS: "Any Manchester United fans here?"

Initial cheers, than loads of boos.

Hooky laughs.

BS: "You're just fucking jealous (of us), aren't you? All right, this is Temptation."

Okay, well...hope you're having a good a time as I am. Trying to think of something witty to say [something], but couldn't. Anyway, this is, erm, going to be our last song, I'm afraid...and it's Love Will Tear Us Apart.

BS: "When you're ready Hooky, when you're ready. I've only waited two [somebody talks at the same time]...one two THREE FOUR!"

(at end)

BS: "Thank you, and thanks for waiting for so long and standing by us. You're a great bunch of fans, I mean that!"

Hooky ends things with a two note melody that persists for a while... and then he plays the bassline to Age Of Consent! Everybody claps along.

PH: "Only joking, you miserable Cockney cunt."

Punter around the taper yells out "Wanker".

Rock_The_Shack

BS: "Hooky's still there, is he? Has anyone got any deodorant, it's a bit hot up here. Andrew [something], if I fuck up this guitar, you're in trouble, mate. Okay, we're gonna challenge you a little bit with a very rocky song called Rock The Shack."

Hooky comes up with a bassline otherwise not heard in the song.

BS: "'ank you!"

Blue_Monday

BS: "Okay, okay. Now we've deafened you with all those noisy guitars, we're going to groove you with some noisy bass drums. This is Blue Monday."

BS: "Thank you, you've been fucking great. So have we. Or pretty good."

Hooky then plays the bassline to Dreams Never End, initially playing it on the wrong fret. And then he plays something else, quite a lovely melody that I can't place....but it eventually starts cutting out. I find that these are the highlights of the show.

Opened with storming Crystal, followed by an ok Regret and closed with a great 60mph and a crowd pleasing LWTUA.

Briefly interviewed with nothing hugely interesting said, but a clip of them performing Blue Monday live on Top of the Pops in 1983 (nice haircuts guys!)

Quick interview with Jeremy Vine who interviewed them in The Big Issue in August, and John Simms who plays Barney in the 24 Hour Party People movie. Bernard or Hooky shouted out that they gave the movie 6 out of 10.

Have recorded on VHS - will encode relevant parts to MPEG1 if anyone's got some webspace to host it for all to enjoy. Contact me privately if so.

Don't have time right now, I gotta get a new bone-breaking session tonight. They came onstage with Barney going like : "Je m'appelle New Order, Je m'appelle Bernard, Je m'appelle Pierre, Je m'appelle Stephane, Je m'appelle Phil Cunningham, Jem'appelle Crystal." - also I was right in front of Bernard, like 2nd or 3rd row, +with me head emerging from the whole audience (1m90) and bernard staring at me in the eyes during two third of the gig, finally pointing at me and admitting he never looked at me in a sexual way in his life before :op

Just before Transmission, he mocked at a guy wearing some bootleg Joy Division Tshirt, asking some guys where they were from ("Scotland", they shouted) and asking them what they wanted the band to play "no no we don't play Age Of Consent anymore..." Favorite bit was True Faith (with some additional Barney guitar riffs during the intro) and weakest moment was Bizarre Love Triangle cos I thought the song was slowed down a bit (in fact it seemed the whole set was slowed down), Bizarre Love Triangle, being one of my favorites, was not at its highest musical potential. Hook stayed for a minute or so at the end of LWTUA, playing bass for the song, the crowd chanting the chorus. Nice. At the encore, Bernard came back with his coat on, tlling the crowd he was ready to leave already, some roadie took his coat off, and then, as he was finishing with the synth bits during Blue Monday, the roadie put his coat on as he was still playing, and then he just left. It seems to me the set was beautifully rendered, it looks like they didn't fucked up one song at all. The beginning of the show was a bit injuring, everybody got crushed, I thought I couldn't stand it really. It went quieter during Your silent Face and Atmosphere, thank god :o)

Rock The Shack, despite being nicely played, didn't seem to gain much interest from the audience. But all in all the band wasn't very talkative. Hook performed his whole old floor-sweeping bass routine.

Like, wow.

Right in front of Hooky throughout, who was regularly looking straight at me. My yells throughout of 'C'mon Hooky' were probably something to do with it, but still. Was hoping to get the drumstick, but he inexplicably gave it to someone in front of Barney.

Amusing bits as follows:

Anyway, just wish I could afford to go tonight, but hell, there's always France Inter.

My second NO concert, and definitely better than the last one.

Ciao,

Mike

Subject: (Fac33) Paris Gig, Nov 12th

Was too lazy to turn the computer on when back home, to give you tids'n'bits about my bithday gig. Nov, 12th, that is. So here they are.

Same same same same. Not as good as sunday's gig.

Your silent face BEFORE Atmosphere, not AFTER.

What about a change, Bernard. Noticed most of the audience weren't huge huge fans. Some came here to see some 80's band perform. A french guy said "see you in 14 years !" - a Brit fellow said "Sack Phil, he's pants"

Bernard introduced TBTHOG as a song to calm things a bit down. (WAHAHAHA) Some french twat spoiled me fun complaining about me bouncing way too much (hell where does he think he was in ? a tea room ? There were seats over at the balcony, you c*nt !)

Encore was RTS, RIAD, BM. Bernard introducing Blue Monday as Fucking Blue Monday, played 5.000 times... bla bla. I mean if they don't want it played, they shouldn't play it.

Fave bit was True Faith, again. Love that guitar. Weakest was BLT. Pah.

Introduced Phil in the middle of the gig, and then saying again, as on sunday "je m'appelle Bernard, je m'appelle Chtophen" (hey we are in France, not germany, bernard) "je m'appelle Hooky !"

I'm glad they took over that big fat bastard. Man, this guy should be topic of a documentary. This time, he came with Bananas over his shoulder, he's had the same jacket and pants for years, he came with a girl he must have annoyed backstage, she was here to translate. "they're not the rolling stones, they're not bananas, they fucking new order !"

Hook doesn't even smile a bit - Phil is a good guitarist really. Steve was mostly surrounded by smoke and the lights. Couldn't see him easily from down the front. Hook stayed to perform a couple of notes more from LWTUA, and Bernard came to turn off his bass amp. Bernard spotted reading lyrics from the monitors during Your Silent Face. Someone asked for the "Kiss Of Death" - Bernard wasn't too pleased to hear my request for "Vivid". :p

Something I noticed. I looked at Bernard's mouth during Temptation cos that old topic came to my mind... [...] from above hurt/hit/whatever the people down below. I looked at what he was saying, and I tend to think it was a V. As in Volts.

Gig was not as good. Bernard enjoyed I think, but I found it was a bit difficult at the beginning... I don't know.

>> The setlist is the same as yesterday, there will be 1 song less in >> the encore... Probably RTS or RIAD, since they always play Blue >> Monday...

So the encore was a three song set, really. RTS, RIAD, BM. Also, yes there was some altercation between some british fellow and Hooky - I think Bernard indeed said something to the extent of "we'll send you president bush"
I didn't find Hooky very pleased really. He was grimacing at people all the time. When he did so to me, I did the same.

"Sabine's lover" confirmed that Gillian was backstage during this consert, and that parts of this concert were broadcast over FM.

BWAHAHA. Actually, that was on Monday, i was a bit disappointed that I thought I could piss Bernard off a bit. Vivid was the only Electronic song that came to my mind so it could be easily heard as a short single word. Bernard ignored it, but I saw at his face he wasn't too pleased...

Pah !

Writeup

I had two tracks on MP3 probably mastered from the FM broadcast. "Ceremony" and "Fucking Blue Monday". The Ceremony track has some French announcer saying a few words at the end. Throw in Transmission and Atmosphere as well.

I've since gotten the whole set (CD of the FM broadcast) There's also a very rare French promo with the entire soundboard also in existence)

Crystal

BS: "Bonjour. That's what I'm going to show you now. Supposed to be in Paris at the end. One two one two one two. Okay, We're going to start off the set tonight with a song off our new album, it's called Kristal"

(Bernard pronounces the song title like a french word)

BS: "Thank you! Merci Beaucoup."

French announcers talk at this point.

Transmission

BS: "We're going to continue with a...a very old song of ours by Joy Division. It's called Transmission."

This one sounds huge. Lots of feedback.

As the song ends, the announcers chatter.

Barney whoops.

Bs: "It's a lot hotter than last night."

Regret

BS: "This is Regret."

Audio distorts here. This happens at a couple other points in the broadcast.

Ceremony

What sounds like an edit between the last track and this one.

BS: "Thank you!"

_60__Miles_An_Hour (at the end of Ceremony)

The MP3 version has this:

BS: "Okay, we're gonna get things, erm, a bit more contemporary with our... this is, eh, 60 Miles An Hour from our new one."

(wonder if this is from the previous night)

The CD of the FM broadcast has this:

Okay, this is a track off our new album and it's called 60 Miles An Hour."

BS: "Thank you."

French announcer talks. Very annoyingly, he talks over Bernard making the following a bit difficult to make out.

Your_Silent_Face

BS: "This is (stress us?). Okay we're going to slow things down a little bit now. Eh, This is a very old song called Your Silent Face."

BS: "Thank you."

Atmosphere

(French transcription is probably very off, I know)

BS: "I hope you're enjoying yourselves. Eh, tripping up. Eh, je ne paux Bernard, je ne paux Stephan, Je ne paux Hooky. [Hooky says a couple of words but is interrupted]

BS: "Forturnately, I can't speak any better French than that, except, eh, 'voules voux [couple of words] si vous ples' This is Atmosphere!"

PH: "Alex! Alex [name-ends in 'enberg']...wherever you are, this is for you. 1-2-3-4!"

BS: "'k you!"

More French announcer chatter, again talking over Bernard.

Close_Range

BS: "Now we're gonna play a very contemporary-sounding New Order one here... this is a song called Close Range."

BS: "Thank you, merci beaucoup."

Touched_By_The_Hand_Of_God

BS: "Thank you very much. Okay, ...say we'll play another song for a little bit because... [can't make out rest of sentence due to the damn annoucers]... but we're not going to, we're going to play a song called Touched By The Hand Of God."

Bizarre_Love_Triangle

BS: "Thank you. This is the last song before... [again, can't make out due to the damn announcers]"

PH: [can't make out due to announcers]

BS: "Okay, this is Bizarre Love Triangle."

They play BLT.

True_Faith

BS: "Thank you. We're having(?) a lot harder time than the the audience. Why don't you all want us to play next. True Faith? All right, then you've got it."

Temptation

BS: "Thank you. You having a good time? We're having a fucking great time. And we are in need of Bez(?) in time for the party after the show. I can assure you. Just cuz we [two words] we can tune up please. In the past I noticed it's very professional in the past we would have done it but not tonight...it's extra."

PH: "Asshole."

BS: "Fucking others in tune. Must be Phil fucking up here. Okay, this is Temptation."

They play Temptation.

BS: "Thanks a lot. Thank you very much."

Love_Will_Tear_Us_Apart

Very nice acoustic-type intro to this one. The announcers on the FM version proceed to talk all over it, bah. Barney yells "Come on!" about 3:12 in (3:42 on the FM version).

BS: "Thank you very much! You've been a fucking great audience. It's great to be back in Paris. It's a beautiful city, and you've been a beautiful audience. Thank you everyone!"

Before the track cuts out, the French announcer on the FM broadcast says "It's fucking New Order". (not present on the FM version, though) Haha. The announcers greet Barney and Hooky, who come backstage. Barney expresses his surprise that they're recording.

Blue_Monday

Here's Bernard's intro, which is going in the quotes file:

BS: "It's a fucking Blue Monday. I dread the day we ever fucking wrote it. Played it five thousand times. I never liked it in the first fucking place (at this point, Bernard is breaking down in giggles)...no, it's fantastic."

(the concert was played on a Monday)

The keyboard intro sequence gets flubbed. And the vocals are pretty flat, or alternate into the sort of singing he does on Get Ready. But the instrumentation at the end is a bit different than normal, and the quality here is superb.

About 3:30 in Barney starts talking to somebody. What about?

BS: "Hi, Andy. How are you? Ball's at a soft spot here, you know."

Barney sings the 'now I stand here waiting' part repeating waiting, as if it was being echoed.

And as things finish up:

BS: "Thank you! You've been fucking great! Thank you!"

Ends in feedback.

From ESPN (info sent by Robert L.):

Sumner stuns Berliners with 1966 taunt
By Dale Johnson

Bernard Sumner shocked fans at a concert in Berlin this week (Nov 15th) when he dedicated a song to David Beckham and taunted them about the 1966 World Cup final.

Sumner, lead singer of New Order, was greeted by cheers when he welcomed Germany's qualification for next year's finals - they beat Ukraine in a play-off on Wednesday.

But those cheers soon turned to boos when he reminded the German crowd how England had beaten them 4-2 in the 1966 final.

'You didn't win in 1966,' quipped Sumner, an avowed Manchester United fan, before bassist Peter Hook intervened to assure the outraged audience that Sumner was only joking.

But memories of their one-sided, 5-1 defeat by England in a World Cup qualifying match in Munich in September were clearly still raw for many in the audience.

Introducing the band's hit song 'Touched by the hand of God', Bernard Sumner said: 'This song is dedicated to David Beckham - touched by the foot of God'.

Any bad feelings, though, were quickly forgotten as the Manchester band, best known for their hits 'Blue Monday' and 'True Faith', put in a storming performance.

Happily for Anglo-German relations, New Order did not play 'World in Motion', the song they wrote with Keith Allen for England's World Cup soccer campaign in 1990.

Transcription

summary: overall, an outstanding performance with excellent sound one of the best of the modern era.

Crystal

BS: "Of course we are New Order. Hello, Berlin! I'm sorry it's been so long since we played here last. It's not your fault, I assure you. It's, eh, nobody's fault. But hopefully, we're going to make up for it tonight and play a great set of songs, starting with Crystal."

(Barney strums guitar once or twice though this mini-speech)

BS: "Thank you!" (bass strum) "Thanks a lot. It's really good to be back here. Seriously."

Transmission

PH: "Here we go."

BS: "Okay, this is a song by Joy Division called Transmission."

Bernard (slightly) flubs the opening guitar intro.

Funny to hear Bernard yell "and we can daaaaaaaaaaaaanceeeee!".

BS: "Thank you. Danke schun."

Regret

BS: [sigh-squeals] "Okay, we're gonna return now with something a little bit more contemporary, from 1993 anyway, that's contemporary for us. This is Regret."

Ceremony

BS: "Thank you! No, we're not playing Blue Monday tonight, Peter doesn't want to play it. I do, but he doesn't, so..."

PH: "You know what I say fucking goes!"

Good rendition, ends in guitar rattle.

_60__Miles_An_Hour

BS: "Thank you! Okay, having a good time, everyone having a good time? Great. So are we. Sounded oh so sincere though, didn't it? Anyway, this is 60 Miles An Hour off our new album, Get Ready. Oh yeah, it's our new single as well. I'm sure the record company would like us to say that, and on behalf of them, I do."

Your_Silent_Face

BS: "Thank you very much. Okay, we're gonna chill things out a little bit now because we're, we're all getting a bit carried away ourselves as well, and eh, yeah. This is called Your Silent Face, which was very influenced by Kraftwerk."

BS: (later on in the intro) "Think of Bavaria."

Atmosphere

BS: "Thank you. Also thought that was a German-sounding tune, I dunno why. And this one is a very English-sounding tune, it's called Atmosphere, it's a Joy Division song."

PH: "What if we scream at your pub. 1-2-3-4." (is that what he's really saying?)

NO play the JD chestnut.

BS: "Thank you. we'd like to dedicate that one to, erm, a very good old friend of ours, who was Ian Curtis. Rest in peace, Ian, rest in peace."

Close_Range

BS: "Back to our new album, this is a track off it called Close Range."

Very good rendition, better than the LP version.

Skip at 4:31 on my CD copy.

Touched_By_The_Hand_Of_God

BS: "Thank you. I'm fucked. I'm fucked, but we're gonna play another one of those jump up and down songs. And it's about an English footballer called Davey Beckham. (cheers turn to boos). Have we got any England fans here tonight? Only joking, only joking! Listen, Germany won last night, so you'll get your own back in the World Cup, I'm sure. But remember, we beat you in 1966, which wasn't so long ago." (more booing)

PH: "He's only joking."

BS: "All right, I'm only joking. This is Touched By The Foot of God."

Cracking good version.

BS: "Thank you. I'm so polite, aren't I. I say 'Thank you' at the end...end of every song. That's cuz I'm glad it's over. Only joking!"

Bizarre_Love_Triangle

BS: "Okay, you notice that I do not have a guitar for this song. Can you guess what song it's going to be? I take that as a 'no' then (laughs). This is, eh, Bizarre Love Triangle. It's about a re...a...a relation me and Hooky and our wives had. It was very bizarre."

lyric: "I feel fine, I feel good...I feel like a piece of wood."

BS: "Merci beucoup. (grunts) Listen, Phil. That was only a fucking joke right, don't get any ideas right, you're not my type (cymbal crash, good one Steve!) At the moment."

True_Faith

BS: "Okay what songs you want to hear next. It's up to you. (folks shout out whatever) Sorry, what? (more shoutouts for whatever) I think you're saying 'True Faith', so this is True Faith.

If you think the audience has a lead on selecting which songs New Order will play, you're even more deluded than the punters in Berlin.

Very good guitar intro here.

PH: "Tell you what. I'm fucking warm but you must be boiling. Because you got your fucking coat on, I can't believe it."

PC: "coat on?"
(not sure if this is in fact Phil getting picked on again)

BS: "Hooky, there's no need to swear, you know. I must apologize for Peter's foul language, you'll never hear me fucking swearing like that. Okay sighs okay, just having a breather. I'll tell you what, I just gotta tune the guitar up...someone's just been stabbed?"

PH: "Very important, tuning, I hope you have the competence for it."

BS: "I know how to tune guitars up."

PH: "In Manchester, if we don't tune them, we ain't performing."

BS: "Okay, I'm in tune. You in tune, Hooky?"

PH: "I am in tune, Bernard, yes."

Temptation

BS: "Okay, this is Temptation."

Love_Will_Tear_Us_Apart

PC: "Thank you."

BS: "Thank you."

BS: "Okay, this is the last song we're afraid, but it's a cracker."

Has acoustic guitar opening. Hooky SCREAMS out, "Let's go!", with Bernard "C'mon"'ing the audience at least three times before Hooky belts out a "Here we go!" at the bridge.

BS: "Thank you very much! You've been a fucking great audience. It's the Berlin, you've been fucking great."

Rock_The_Shack

BS: "We, we never ever ever do encores, but on this one evening we'll make an exception. We did, well we did in Paris as well and London and Manchester. Okay, we're gonna start with a ve...a very, guitar-based song, and we're gonna finish with a synthesizer-based song just to show our virtuosity. Okay, this is Rock The Shack."

A very good rendition. Hooky does backing vocals. No Gillepse to sing the second verse.

Blue_Monday

BS: "Thank you. All right, for those of you who don't guitars, this is called Blauer Montag."

Wow, this sounds really really good. Has a sample of the old vocoder lines in it, too.

There's a brief cut at 1:33 that I think was put out by the broadcast, as all known copies seem to have it.

Bernard "hey, heys" shortly before 2:00, and whistles at about 2:08.

And this from TJ:

BS: "Naked saunas.....marching music......"

NO: 16 NOV 01 Palladium - Cologne, Germany

From webcast of this concert (224k RealVideo)
100 minutes!

A fan says that despite the official reports, the Order's performance was, after the first few songs, sloppy and error-ridden. I tend to agree with this assessment. In other words, this is a classic performance. If I wanted pitch perfect renditions, I'd just stick to the records.

I also have a CD, that may have been taken from a lossy source (maybe from the webcast stream). This version cuts out much of Bernards between-song dialogue, which is a shame.

The encore features a slight change, with Ruined In a Day appearing -after- Blue Monday, as the last song.

Transcription

Crystal

BS: "Sorry to keep you waiting, but we're only 20 minutes late. We played in Berlin last night, and we made the unfortunate mistake of going to a nightclub. So we're a bit tired and a bit emotional, but we'll do our best for you. This is Crystal."

Bernard waves and kisses to somebody out in the audience before going into the opening riff. I guess he's replaced his woo's with yelled "whaoas" and "heys". Hooky gets into it as well, too...one of the more emotional and energetic performances of this soon-to-be-classic that I've heard. A whistle near the end, too.

BS: "Thank you! Thank you very much."

Transmission

Bernard almost makes it through the opening riff without a mistake. ;-) Hooky's vocals are very prominent during the chorus. And Stephen Morris is still the hardest-working drummer in rock.

BS: "Danke schun. Of course, that was about Radio Angst live. My favorite radio station, Radio Angst...and uh, my favorite trainers, Adidas trainers, they're gone at the moment... not that we're sponsored by anyone, but eh, I just really like 'em. (guitar strum) Okay, we're gonna bring, erm, that was a Joy Division song. (turns to backstage, says 'feedback')

All but 'danke schun' are missing from the CD version I have.

Regret

BS: (continues): "That was a Joy Division song called Transmission, I'm getting a lot of feedback up here...but this is a New Order song called Regret."

NO play Regret.

BS: "Thank you. (guitar strum) You having a good time? Surprisingly, we've having a good time. We've been on tour for a whole week now, and I'll tell you it's taking it out of us. (turns to his right and says "hasn't it?") Even Phil."

(by 'it' does he mean "a lot"...I suppose so)

Ceremony

The camera pays an unusual amount of attention to Phil C. Hooky vocals pretty loud during the chorus here as well. Bernard flubs the first couple of notes during the solo. Otherwise, very good version....

BS: "Thank you! Jerry, can you set...ehm, give me more sound? Danke schun."

_60__Miles_An_Hour

BS: (continues): "Okay, this is a track off our new album, it's called "60 -Kilometers- Per Hour. (drums...few seconds pause) 1 2."

Hooky rolls up his sleeves as Bernard starts singing.

After he finishes out the tune with some guitar F/X, Barney pumps his fist up in the air and screams "Yeah!"

Your_Silent_Face

BS: "'ank you. All right, we're gonna kill it down a little bit not, a bit less time...a lower octane of song, ehm, we're gonna play a song off eh...Power, Corruption, and Lies...eh, think it's that's right, Steve?...Power, Corruption, and Lies...called Your Silent Face."

Of course, Phil handles the keyboard part for that one, quite admirably. Bernard's melodica is ok too. ;-) I think Hooky almost was going to play his part a bit early... During this song, you can clearly see that Bernard is wearing earplugs, which I first saw at around the time of the Jools Holland performance. I think they don't detract at all, I mean, Sinead O'Connor got away with them. Barney start's doing a silly guitar-in-hand dance near the end of the tune.

BS: "Thank you! (strum) I just got to tune notes, so bear with us. (spends a few seconds tuning his guitar) Shit, does anyone else tune a guitar up? I've done it."

Atmosphere

BS: (continues) "Okay, we're gonna play a song that we've...I don't, to my knowledge, I don't think we've ever played in Cologne before... we have, we actually played it once as Joy Division. This is a Joy Division song, and it's called Atmosphere."

Camera for the first time cuts to the audience, who are all waving their hands. No lighters, though. A bit of a cut-out in terms of the audio, right at the end of the the second verse, before the "People like you..." part. One "hey" after the "abandoned too soon" line.

After the song ends, Barney whispers something in Hooky's ear.

Close_Range

BS: "Okay, now we've chilled you out a little bit, we're gonna tee you off a little bit. Erm, and we're gonna play eh, a fairly uptempo song off our new album, and it's called Close Range."

The webcast breaks up a bit right when Bernard is about to sing. Speaking of which, Bernard ends up yelling quite a few lyrics, I don't know if they were having monitor problems. New drum pattern, or technical glitch...by the end of the song, they pull themselves together again...taking the advice of the lyrics, heh...except right at the end, Bernard is left hanging to dry, as everybody else stops playing when he continues to sing...he makes a face, goes "ha ha", and says:

BS: "Thought there was another chorus! Jerry, can you just.. I think it just might be compressing a little bit much, that could be the problem... [I think he's talking about his mic]. We should put another chorus on the end of that. Thank you, thank you."

Touched_By_The_Hand_Of_God

(doesn't appear on the CD I have)

BS: "Okay, this is a song called Touched By The Hand Of God, and we've gonna get our resident DJ, Mr. Arthur Baker, who produced this song, to do a bit of on-llne DJ'ing for us."

Camera cuts to Arthur Baker in front of a pair of turntables, scratching, of all things, which you can barely hear. The webcast cuts off a bit in a couple places, pity. Bernard does a "1 2 3 4" before the last round of chorus.

BS: "Thank you, Arthur. And numero uno DJ, uh, Mr. International"

AB: "What's that, what did you say? Thank you folks!"

BS: "All the way from New York City...Boston....right."

BS: (taking a towel) "Ohahh, it's fucking hot here...we had a bit of a wild night last night so we're all a bit fucked. Anyway... (Hooky guffaws...feedback screeches) here's a guitar...(more feedback)

Bizarre_Love_Triangle

BS: "Here's a song that doesn't contain any guitars whatsoever, for those of you of the dance music fraternity. This is Bizarre Love Triangle."

Webcast starts cutting off a bit. Barney actually jumps at one point, and starts dancing later. Scary.

At the end of the song, Hooky goes up to Barney and whispers something back to him, grabbing onto him

BS: "We've got a wheelchair...or a stretcher. Thank you, danke schun. (piano notes)" Barney takes a sip of something.

True_Faith

(left off of the CD version I have)

BS: "This is True Faith."

Hooky comes in a bit early, and his bass has an amazing amount of chorus on it. Sumner's guitar sounds especially funky. Too bad the stream breaks up a bit again, so I can't make out what Hooky blurts out..."W6N...". Nice touch, yelling out "of the things that cost you too much!" Of course, this has the "taking drugs with me" line. Hooky starts freeranging. Barney screams out "so demanding" as well.

BS: "Merci beaucoup, danke schur."

Temptation

Crowd starts yelling for Temptation.

BS: "Temptation it is then, you've got it!".

Neat...when Barney starts singing "oh you've got green eyes, oh you've got blue eyes, oh you've got grey eyes" the lights change colors to match. The latter guitar solos actually have a bit of wah-wah on them.

BS: "Yeah!!"

BS: (points off in the direction of the audience)

"I've like to apologize to all the people stuck behind the pillars over there. If you all come and see me after, hello...sorry about that, that's disgusting, I'll give you your money back, if you come and see me after the show, I'll give you your money back. If you can find me."

Barney swaps guitars...for the next tune, instead of his Gibson SG, he has a Rickenbacker, with a capo on the second fret."

Love_Will_Tear_Us_Apart

BS: "Okay, we're gonna finish with a very special song."

Barney yells out "C'mon" a couple of times during one one of the choruses, with Hooky screaming "Here we go, Cologne!" The webcast desyncs a bit again, bad enough for the audio to completely cut out. What's strange is that Hooky's bass starts slowing down, almost like it's prerecorded (but it's not!)

BS: "Thank you. You've been a fucking great audience. I enjoyed it much more than the Robbie Williams concert. Is there any Robbie Williams fans here? Thank you very much, you've been great. Good night!" Hooky keeps playing bass throughout, and ends with a solo of the LWTUA melody, before waving and walking off.

Encore

(CD I have includes none of these)

Roadies come out and adjust stuff, as the fans clap and yell. New Order don't come on for a few minutes, but of course come back on.

Rock_The_Shack

BS: "My breath smells like your penis. Okay, hi, may name's Bernard, and I'm a Capricorn. This is Rock The Shack, off our new album."

I'm of the minority of NO fans who seems to like this tune, and they do it justice here. Song ends with Barney tuning down his low E string and strumming on that.

BS: {strums chord} "Thank you!". Meanwhile, Hooky pounds on his symdrums.

Blue_Monday

BS: (continues): "Okay, okay, that was a song full of guitars, now we're going to play for you a song full of synthesizers, it's called Blauer Montag, or Blauer Montag, or something like that, anyway."

Heh, they should just do the Hardfloor mix in the same fashion that they play the Perfecto remix of True Faith. Cunningham plays 'Crystal' style guitar...echo on the "waiting" part of "I stand her waiting...".

Ruined_In_A_Day

BS: "Thank you, we're gonna play one very last song for you. It's called Ruined In A Day."

The song is performed in an eerie, alluring green light.

BS: "Thank you, c'mon you've been fucking great. Thanks for being a great audience and we'll see you sometime again in the future, bye!"

The roadies come up and start taking things down...somebody got handed the setlist.

..less than 48 hours after the gig..not bad at all... don't even know if the first posting ever made it to the list, but here we go again..

Since I'm on the digest, I don't have a clue what has been reported from Stockholm, but in short it can be summed in one word: brilliant!

In some more words (have you read about it before, nevermind, do it again..), it was...

...a great, small venue as earlier reported. Only 1,800 people in the crowd and a very intimate place for a concert.

...also great seeing the living legend - as it also said on Hookeys speakers - Arthur Baker lurking around before the concert, looking like a cross between a bum and santa claus, hanging with local swedish reggae star (!) Papa Dee.

..good to hear Baker do a great DJ-set before the concert, dropping Confusion, not-so-surprising "Walking on sunshine" and Clash "This is radio Clash" amongst some really bass-heavy stuff.

..brilliant to see the band entering the stage about 11.15 and playing for about 1 and a half hour.

The set started with Bernard apologizing for not playing in Sweden for so many years (they havent been here since 1983..) and than dedicate the whole set to Sven-Goran Eriksson (for non uk-residents or football interested people, a former swede who now manage the English soccer team). And, also, once again, he honoured Stockholm as Europes finest city.

The setlist was the same as the last concerts: Crystal / Transmission / Regret / Ceremony / 60 Miles an Hour / Your Silent Face / Atmosphere / Close Range / Touched by The Hand of God / Bizarre Love Triangle / True Faith / Temptation / Love Will Tear Us Apart

The encore included Rock The Shack and Blue Monday. I'm not 100 procent sure, but I think Bernard introduced Ruined in a day between the songs, but then Blue Monday kicked in instead. A fook-up, maybe?

Backstage I'm also rather sure both Gillian and her sister hung out, sipping wine.

Bernard was a bit stiff during the first part of the concert, excused himself and than started the famous freaky dancing. He was completley over the top during Blue Monday, but he must have been rather sober or else he would have fell over. You dont do this sort of dancing normally not ending up on the floor...

Hooky was also in great spirits, smiling and doing every trick the book and of course insulting the guards. He was even down in the crowd posing for some photos. What a brilliant entertainer!

Best part last: The Swedish national radio had there mobile recording studio at Cirkus, wich means this concert will be broadcast. On the radio. Crystal clear. I havent checked for a broadcasting date, but hopefully it won't be too long away. Great to hear this great stuff again.

well, I think this sums it up rather good. a great evening!

carl

(he later shared both the JW (I believe) and FM versions to DIME)

Writeup from CD. It's missing the first 4 tracks.

Arthur Baker introduces the group.

AB: "Good evening, good evening, Stockholm. My name's Arthur Baker, and I'd like to bring on the best band in the world, my good friends from Manchester, England, NEW ORDER!"

Crystal

BS: "Hello! It's been a long time since we've been to Stockholm, but it's a city we like very much. And, erm, I'd like to dedicate this set to eh, our finest living Englishman at the moment, Sven-Goran Eriksson."

Steve hits his kit.

PH: "I don't think there's anything to make you look more like a cunt, Alex, so there you go."

BS: "Okay, we're goint to start the set tonight with Crystal."

BS: "Jerry, can I have a little less Phil, and a bit more of my guitar, please, maybe a little bit of guitar in the wedges."

Transmission

BS: "This is Transmission."

(after)

BS: "'k you. Jerry, I think maybe we need a little more 'oomph' from the side fills."

Regret

PH: "Very kind of you, I'd like to dedicate you this song to all of you who came to see Revenge, cuz Sarge here has no regrets."

BS: "Okay, this is Regret."

PH: "Thank you. Bit less guitar, Jerry, bit of reverb on the voice, please."

Ceremony

BS: "Is everybody having a good time? I must apologize for the amount of time it's taken us to get back to Stockholm, because Stockholm is one of my...is my favorite city in the whole of Europe. Really, no, really it is, so hopefully we won't be so long next time."

BS: "Well, we're going to play an old song now, it's called Ceremony."

Hooky is prominent on the choruses.

BS: "'k you."

PH: "Okay, can we get this fucking picture thing sorted out here, right?" We only come once every twenty years, so if they want to take a fucking picture, let 'em take it, OK?"

Someone cries for Age Of Consent.

_60__Miles_An_Hour

BS: "Okay, the next song we're gonna play is off our wonderful new album, Raise The Pressure [Steve hits the cymbals at Bernard's quip] and is called '60 Miles An Hour'."

Bass riff is really off here during the synth bridge.

Your_Silent__Face

BS: "'ank you. Okay we're gonna, erm, [coughs] excuse my voice, it's, erm, a bit fucked. We're gonna tone down things a little bit with Your Silent Face."

BS: "Thank you! One two, one...two...one two one two one two. Jerry, can you give me...transmit a little more to me, I don't seem to be getting any reverb at all. [sigh] Hey, hey hey hey hey."

Atmosphere

BS: "Okay, okay...does anyone like Joy Division? Well, we're gonna play a song now which is my favorite Joy Division song. In fact, it's probably my favorite song that we've ever written. It's called Atmosphere. And it features Mr. Peter Hook on bass which is still(?), really."

PH: "Just bear with me a moment. Checking(?) him out to take that reunion tour."

BS: "Get on with it."

PH: (off-mic) "1-2-3-4!"

(at end)

BS: "Thank you very much. A bit more reverb, eh, Jerry please."

Another cry for Age Of Consent.

Close_Range

BS: "All right, we're gonna hop things up a bit now, and hope you jump around a little bit, because we've started getting a bit hot under the collar now. This is a track off our new album called 'Close Range'."

(at end)

BS: "Just have a quick drink...[ah...]"

Touched_By_The_Hand_Of_God

BS: "Okay, this is a song of ours called Touched By The Hand Of God."

BS: "'ank you. [coughs and clears throat].

Then Hooky and who knows who else on stage starts doing it! A cacophony of throat clearing!

PH: "Fookin' hell."

Is everybody having a reasonably good time? The gap at the front of the stage is very wide. I'm sorry about that."

Bizarre_Love_Triangle

BS: "Okay, anyway, this song, ah, is called Bizarre Love Triangle."

Partly way, Hooky looks to have screamed (off-mic) "Get out of there!!"

True_Faith

BS: "Okay, this is True Faith."

You can clearly hear Bernard's voice starting to give out.

Very interesting guitar intro.

Bernard sings the first verse, but apparently too early, so he yells out "one, two, three, four" and starts over.

BS: "We did that, but I'm not gay, really, honestly.

PH: "Can I just say, can I just say a thank you to Coatsey, my long-suffering roadie...for at least [glitch] I worked with [glitch] some time, aren't we, boy? (?) [Steve hits drums]

BS: "I'll tell you what, this is the last night of our tour. We've been on tour for seven days. That's right, seven fucking days. And we are fucking exhasuted. I know I stopped doing it. Even our new guitarist here, Phil Cunningham here, is exhausted. He spent so much money on watching porno films at the hotel that we're not going to make any profit on this tour."

[Steve hits the drums - in comedy routine style]

BS: "Is that true, Phil? Shake your head if that's not true."

Temptation

BS: "Okay, this is Temptation."

(after)

BS: "Thank you very much." (quite a bit of reverb)

Love_Will_Tear_Us_Apart

PH: "Sounding like a bit of wind, that, Phil..."

Teaser acoustic chords, followed by the start of the song.

Hooky yells out, "Steve Morris on drums!"

During the second set choruses, Bernard yells "C'mon...yeeeah!" followed by Hooky saying, "Here we go."

BS: "I think that's the end. Thank you very much. We're all a bit fucked up here, not fucked up, just fucked, but thanks for bearing with us, you've been a great audience, [Swedish that sounds like: 'a little stucco, a little swen'], and erm, that's the end of our tour. Good night!"

Neat ascending sound effect, than the Swedish announcement says something to the effect of "That was New Order, live." The announcer isn't present on the webcast that was used to source the CD, though.

Cheering and stamping, and a cool sound effect later, the Order come back on.

Rock_The_Shack

BS: "Hello, everybody. Did you enjoy those wafery biscuit at the front? Okay, we never...Does Hooky sound a bit too loud? He sounds..."

BS: "This is the last show, and this is the last two songs of our..."

Hooky chimes in.

PH: "European tour".

BS: "One week tour, and this is Rock The Shack off our new album."

BS: "C'mon!"

Ends in a bit of wah-wah and feedback.

BS: "'k you."

Blue_Monday

BS: "For those of you who don't like guitars, I apologize. And by way of an apology, we'd like to play Blue Monday for you."

Lots of collossal guitar in this one, probably courtesy of Mr. Cunningham.
