NO: 22 JAN 86 Connolly Hall - Cork, Ireland

Looks like the date has been wrong all these years, see: https://twitter.com/JD_Central/status/1352677911506034688

I have a listing for six tracks, but the known recording doesn't even have that, but only the first three songs complete and a fragment of the fourth.

Somebody in the crowd near the taper says their warm-up is a prelude to Blue Monday, but the band start out with a different song.

_The___Village_

BS: "This is called The Village".

(at the end)

BS: "Thanks very much, stop [unintelligible]".

_Ceremony_ follows.

BS: "Thank you, oh, oh very much indeed."

_Love___Vigilantes_ follows.

PH: "Shut up, you thick-looking Irish."

_Face___Up_

BS: "No Joy Division, that was ten years ago."

Some fans whistle.

Recording abruptly cuts out.

NO: 24 JAN 86 Saint Francis Xavier - Dublin, Ireland

Source is from a tape in my archives. Sound isn't as good as the following night's....however, the version posted by dropdeadfred on DIME is significantly better, even if both are affected by the Dolby C bug.

The given set list in nogig is correct, except that on my tape The Perfect Kiss is left off. See below on why.

You can hear the last few seconds of the pre-gig prerecording before the Order take the stage.

_Everythings___Gone___Green_

PH: "Good Evening".

_Blue___Monday_

BS: "Thanks very much. Thanks very much. Complain to the promoter about fucking eating in this place if I was you. Fucking freezing."

(not the song, but as part of a toast)

The crowd goes absolutely apeshit and start chanting. What's annoying is that a few times in between later songs, you can hear somebody loudly crying out for EGG, as if he came in late and missed the first song!

BS: "Thank you very much."

_Dreams___Never___End_ sounds absolutely massive. Hooky nails the vocal.

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle_

BS: "This is a new song, it's called Bizarre Love Triangle".

Bizarre Love Triangle has slightly different lyrics. This is the second time they had played this song live (the first was Hemel Hempstead on 08 Nov 85) but that first version was an instrumental, so this could perhaps be the first vocal airing of BLT ever! I don't know if BLT played during Hemel's soundcheck was instrumental or not.

"Keep your thoughts inside, these(?) are things you won't forget" is one example of a lyric in this version that didn't survive to the final version.

Some audience shouts between tracks.

_Thieves___Like___Us_

(at end)

BS: "Turn the lights off, it's too fucking bright up here, man."

_Sooner___Than___You___Think_

lyric: "Your country is a fucking awful place, if I don't work(?) here, be in disgrace."

BS: "Thank you very much."

The group fiddle around with their instruments for a bit afterwards.

PH: "Sounds nearly in tune."

_Broken___Promise_ has a completely different chorus, and somewhat different instrumentation. I seem to recall that the Preston Guildhall version played on OCT 22 85 being lyrically identical to the version on _Brotherhood_, so they may have been experimenting, meaning that BS was probably pissed and pulling stuff out of his arse.

opening lyric: "I don't know where the money goes, and I don't care where the profit lies."

Chorus:

"I'm so glad I found you, I'd never hope that we will love(?) you."

_Subculture_ follows.

There's a tape edit between _Subculture_ and _Denial_, right before which the group can be heard turning. This is the last time New Order every play Denial, and they make it a good one.

_State___Of___The___Nation_

(notable quotable...mark for Barney Says)

BS: "This next song is another new song. It's called "The Shame Of The Nation". And its about shagging, mindless shafting, so you'll probably won't understand it."

BS: "Emulator!"...and naturally, one can be heard staggering into the intro.

BS: "Thank you very much, [something, definitely not 'good night']"

Perfect Kiss is absent from my copy, it's unknown whether there are any copies with it present.

"email email" on faclist writes:

"A similar thing happened at the first of two nights at the SFX Hall in Dublin in 1986. NO took about 15 minutes to come back on, and played Perfect Kiss to about 15 people and the cleaners. The rest of the crowd came roaring back in, but the local bootlegger missed the encore, so it is not on most tapes of the gig."

NO: 25 JAN 86 Saint Francis Xavier - Dublin, Ireland

Source is tape from my archives, decent quality. A copy seeded to DIME posted by dropdeedfr is a bit better than mine.

You can hear the last couple of seconds of the pre-gig prerecording before the Order take the stage on the particular source I have.

Punter says "stop in out back as well" or something close to that.

_Confusion_

BS: "This is Confusion."

Some talking between two individuals at the 1:30 mark.

There's a guitar solo on this one, but it's mixed fairly low.

BS: "Thank you very much." Ends in a descending guitar riff.

Folk shout out for Temptation, but get _The___Perfect___Kiss_ instead.

BS: "Thank you very much indeed. Thank you very much."

New Order than play _Temptation_.

_As___It___Is___When___It___Was_

BS: "Thank you very much, thanks very much." [He mutters something else I can't make out, might be "What can I say?"] "Shhh...."

Ends in Hooky playing a distinctive melody that usually accompanies Temptation.

_Your___Silent___Face_

BS: "We're going to slow the set down a bit now, hopefully."

A bit of talking can be heard after the "piss off" line.

...and at the end.

BS: "Thanks very much again, thank you very much, very much."

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle_

Bass pluck.

BS: "It's a new song, it's called Bizarre Love Triangle. Sounds like, but may nor may not be "It's about bees in oil."

As this is still an early version, there are some variations.

First verse:

"You will take me by the hand, and I will make you understand." "That's the way that it goes and it's what everyone knows." "If you walk a little too fast, you'll hurt yourself in the ass."

Second verse:

"I wish my life it could be new..."
"Keep your phone upside your head, you think too much and you'll be dead."
"That's the way that it fucking goes and it's what everyone knows." "Keep your life inside your head, you think too much and you'll be dead."

The chorus is the same.

Ends with a bit of the bass riff of "Chosen Time", which also sounds like the next tune the Order are about to play.

BS: "This song is called _This___Time___Of___Night_".

lyric: "Without you in my bloody home..." The gone insane and lived in vain lines are reversed.

lyric: "What good's a lie when you've got fuck all to hide..."

A/B side cut precedes _Face___Up_.

BS: "You go out on stage and you'll get me please." (?) And a bit later on:

BS: (after a whoop) "Hey, brighten up a bit, nights, bright, lights, lights, lights." (?)

lyric: "don't let anybody tell you that it's okay, because it's not that fucking way."

The ending bass sounds similar to "All Day Long", interetingly enough.

_Age___Of___Consent_

BS: "Thank you very much, thank you very much...ehm. Despite all that's going on, I'll keep my gob shut tonight."

After the first "regret" line, Bernard says (presumably to Steve), "Slow down!"

_Sunrise_

BS: "Thank you very much. This next song is our last song, it's called Sunrise. (cheers) It's all about nothing. It's a catchy title and a catchy tune, but it doesn't really mean anything. Guess that's like the story of my life. And yours as well."

Ace version, as usual.

BS: "Thank you very much, good night."

They come back on to Hooky causing a racket on his bass. Folks chant like madmen to the machine beats of _Blue___Monday_, with statacco drum beats and Barney's axe.

Barney skips the first line for some reason.

_Atmosphere_

An appropriate closer to a storming gig.

BS: "Thanks very much, goodnight!"

NO: 27 JAN 86 Queens University - Belfast, Ireland

Second or third generation audience tape. Apparently, this may be a performance that was not well circulated...I'll find out more at some point.

Rhythmic pre-gig music fades out as Bernard takes the stage.

_Sooner___Than___You___Think_

BS: "Hello, everyone, we're New Order. Took us a long time to get here but we've gotten in."

Crowd chants something as the Order start to play.

BS: "Thanks a lot."

_The___Perfect___Kiss_

BS: "I need [a pop is]? on stage." (can't quite make out the request)

"Thanks very much"

(edit can be heard between this song and Lonesome Tonight)

Bernard's a bit rusty on the lyrics.

Another edit, tape mix sounds different...louder and harsher, and audience can be more clearly heard. This is indeed a difference source.

BS: "You tell us what you want to play and we will play it"

Somebody close to the mic yells "Everything's Gone Green" Bernard replies, "I'll play it later on". Not in reference to EGG, since it doesn't appear.

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle_

Has different lyrics and lyrical melody. This is the third time this has been played live.

_State___Of___The___Nation_

BS: "We'll play another song you don't know, it's called State of the Nation. Or maybe some of you do know it."

More yelling, Sunrise and EGG.

_Age___Of___Consent_

PH: [unintelligable]

_Ceremony_

BS: "We're gonna play some of our old songs now...cuz we owe that to you, I wonder. Don't you, do...don't you? Each and every one of you."

"Thank you very much."

_Love___Will___Tear___Us___Apart_

"This is a very, very old song. I've never played it live before." (which is of course not true, as they had played it at the Tower Ballroom Birmingham on 9 May 83)

The whole audience sings the chorus. Huge wails of feedback, must have been mayhem. At one point, Bernard tells Steve to slow down, which he must not have obeyed.

Bernard thanks everyone.

There's an FM recording of Ceremony and LWTUA, interspersed with an interview of Barney.

(edit into encore)

_Blue___Monday_

Starts out with Hooky bass solo, neat. Then the motor beat kicks in.

BS: [unintelligible]

_Temptation_

lyric: "Oh it's the last time, oh it's the last fucking time..."

Soundcheck

Recording levels are very low, and are only on the right channel.

State Of The Nation
Bass: LWTUA + Way Of Life?
Drums: Subculture
Keys
Drums: 5-8-6
More drums, various
Keys: Perfect Kiss

NO: 08 FEB 86 Royal Court Theatre - Liverpool

(to quote Paul Trowell)

"This was a council benefit for Liverpool entitled "From Manchester With Love "...the compere for the night was Derek Hatton...

_The___Perfect___Kiss_

BS: "We're New Order. This is a Perfect Kiss"

BS: "Thank you very much."

_Temptation_ is next, followed by _As___It___Is___When___It___Was_.

Keyboard or melodica can be heard in between tracks.

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle_

BS: "You have to shout a bit louder than that, I can't hear a word you're saying. Then again, I never could."

This has the original chorus of, 'you think too much, you could be dead'.

After they finish, everybody starts to shout out their favorites.

BS: "Fucking shutup".

_Face___Up_ follows.

_Age___Of___Consent_

BS: "Thank you very much, thank you very much, getting warmed up a little bit now. Also getting pissed a little bit now."

_Sunrise_ and _Love___Will___Tear___Us___Apart_ close out the set.

PH: "(Every time I say)? I love you, it ends in trouble."

Soundcheck

A bit of drum machine, as well as the _Subculture_ sequences, which last about 10 minutes.

Lots of Hooky muttering at the start.

PH: "Okay, will you give this one...Andy...put my vocal on my side, on my wedgies please."

Hooky one-twos a few times, and makes comments about not hearing the sound in his monitors, and later mentions he can hear a bit of Emulator.

A bit of an original melody as a bouns, too.

This is followed by _This___Time___Of___Night_ guitar.

Now Bernard one-twos a few times, and make some comments.

Hooky plays a bit of the TTON bassline, and Bernard strums a bit of _Sister___Ray_.

More Bernard one-twos, and then the keyboards to _Lonesome___Tonight_.

This is followed by the keyboards to _Bizarre___Love___Triangle_, with Hooky doing the one-two duties.

Then there's some _Lets___Go_ guitar, and then _As___It___When___It___Was guitar, followed by _Age___Of___Consent_ bass and drums.

And this is concluded by an instrumental version of _This___Time___Of___Night_.

NO: 27 FEB 86 Civic Hall - Wolverhampton, England

Multiple tape sources, second gen from BV and unknown gen but very clear recording from ST. The ST version is recorded more closely to the stacks, it sounds like.

_Love___Vigilantes_

Both tapes have a bit of the Vikings theme.

BS: "Hello, we're New Order" (reverb makes it appear 'New Order' is said twice).

There's talking in the BV version.

Explosive guitar solo.

BS: "Thank you very much."

Weird series of descending bass notes.

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle_

BS: "This is a new song, it's called Bizarre Love Triangle."

Lyrics aren't the final version yet, has the "you think too much you might be dead lyric." common with early live versions, plus a variant I hadn't heard before.

lyric: "Every time I see your face/
I lose my life and I lose my place

Drum strike and lots of punters shouting.

_Hurt_

The final performance of this song.

Lots of chatter by somebody with a thick brogue, perhaps Scottish?"

BS: "Thank you very very much indeed."

_Sunrise_

Interesting pick-on-string noise at the start.

Scruff near the end of the BV version.

_Elegia_

BS: "Thank you very much, thank you very much. We've got...we've got to take the set a bit more sensitive now. That is what we're gonna play."

The BV tape has a few drop outs and pitch shifts during the intro.

During a quiet portion of the song Bernard says something.

BS: "Finish it, you daft cunt."

_Leave___Me___Alone_

(at end)

BS: "Sounds a bit like Big Country that song, don't you think."

_Everythings___Gone___Green_

On the BV version somebody calls out for 'Ceremony'. His wish is not fufilled, though he was fairly close.

BS: "Thank you very much. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you very much. I feel I know...that I know each and every one of you personally from...from the moment I was born."

O-kay.

_Subculture_

BS: "This is Subculture."

Edit on ST-sourced recording.

_Face___Up_

(the BV version misses the first sentence below)

BS: "Anyway, this is the first time we've ever played in Wolverhampton in our lives. Just thought I'd tell you that. And I must say, I'm very impressed..."

Gillian inexplicibly plays the keyboard line to Subculture.

BS: "Just played that one, Gillian. I must say I'm very impressed with Wolverhampton. I've always liked the name of it, it reminds me of wolves. Wolves with big dicks. There's one 'ere." (thanks to TJ)

BS: "Thank you again, thank you very much."

Feedback squall.

_Broken___Promise_

PH: "One, two, three, four..."

lyric: "So the things in life that mean so much to me they fuck you too."

Excellent version of this song, if not quite on par to the ULU version.

BS: "Thank you very much, good night."

The ST recording has a bit of the pre-encore backing music, some techno-funk sounding piece. The BV recording contains someone commenting, "but for that, two more songs, and he would have been on top of me." as well even more of the PA backing pre-encore.

PH: "Well, that was a really rotten tape, that was."

_The___Perfect___Kiss_

PH: (off-mic): "Yo!"

At 0:34, Hooky yells, "Where are you, Twinny?"

The BV tape has some dropouts about 8:30 in, likely the B-side of the damage on 'Sunrise'...probably from the upstream copy.

NO: 28 FEB 86 St. George's Hall - Bradford

Currently only have a part of the soundcheck, _Bizarre___Love___Triangle_ and _Shellshock_ (instrumentals).

The BLT portion is just the synths, but the Shellshock s/c includes drum effects and some guitar.

Somebody shouts out in between Shellshock and the next one, something about last night being really good. The next one features an amazing guitar sound reminiscent of _Broken___Promise_.

Total of about 14 minutes.

(tape is a few generations off the master, sounds like, but still very listenable)

Gig writeup:

Funeral For A Viking is the intro tape. Barney says something else mired in deep echo/reverb.

BS: "This is the _State___Of___The___Nation_"

(which they perform)

BS: "Thank you very much, thank you very much. Tonight's not[?] about ..[?].. to get some atmosphere a bit, please" (can't quite make this out)

_586_

BS: "Turn the fucking lights down!"

(NO perform 586)

BS: "Thank you very much. This is a...eh, a new song called _Broken___Promise_

PH: "1-2-3-4"

Bass riff is still different (superior in my opinion) to the released version.

lyric: "If you're right and you're simply there" (instead of 'sinful'), "my father" (instead of 'for God's sake you') "must be wrong."

Second verse seems improvised, and is hard to make out.

Oh I don't know why people get stupid
I don't know why ...cupid
I don't know why my life's[?] been led. I don't know why smiling...

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle_

BS: "This is another new song, it's called "Bizarre Love Triangle", it's all about the News Of The World"

Vocals are similar to the Dublin '86 versions.

A bit of feedback greets the welcome arrival of _Lonesome___Tonight_. End of the first verse is just vocals and drums, very neat!

There's also some variation at the end of the second verse, but I can't make it out. This version is sadly a bit under par compared to their usual good effort.

The Order than play _Sooner___Than___You___Think_ without incident.

_Love___Vigilantes_

PH: "Ready?" More feedback.

BS: "Thank you very much."

Descending bass riff before the next song, _Face___Up_

lyric: "We were young and we were pure and life was just an open door... FUCK YOU!".

The opening salvo of _Temptation_ includes squalls of feedback.

And of course, "it's the last fucking time".

More feedback between this and the penultimate song, _Ceremony_.

BS: "Thank you very much, thanks."

Ends with Hooky's bass and a touch off feedback."

Somebody yells, I can't make out. Funeral For A Viking resumes for a bit, but soon we are to our encore track.

_The___Perfect___Kiss_

BS: "Terry, this one's not right. You don't want this one to sound clear[?]. Turn the vocals up as well, Ed. Turn up the sequencer up, Ed. Turn the synth up, turn the bass up, the guitars and drums."

BS: "Thanks...very much, thank you very much, thank you very much, good night!"

Punter gets a couple of words out before the tape cuts out, "Where's Bill and Jeff[?]..."

NO: 01 MAR 86 Spectrum Arena - Warrington, England

Source is a CD made from the master cassette mixing desk copy. Sound is superb. Barney's guitar playing here is superb as well.

_State___Of___The___Nation_

BS: "'Right"

BS: "Thank you very much".

Fans shout out.

_The___Village_

Bass sequencer fires off at 2:45, likely a mistake.

Barney strums guitar in the 15 seconds or so between this and the next track.

_Broken___Promise_

Hooky counts out "1-2-3-4".

Lyrics here significantly diverge from the released version.

lyric: "I don't know why people die, and I don't know why [fortunes?] fly..."

lyric: "If you're right and I'm [not 'sinful'], then our father must be wrong"

Second verse starts out:

lyric: "I don't know why fuckers die, and I don't know why you've got big eyes. What I know is that you're a loser, and [that depends?]...and I'm a loser."

Break bass solo is different.

lyric: "But I never could forsake you... (instread of 'could believe it')"

_Your___Silent___Face_

Has to be the only version where Barney doesn't sing "piss off" or its variant...his voice gets real quiet and trails off...

Barney plugs in his bass for _Confusion_.

_Age___Of___Consent_

Widely-available CD copy has diginoise starting at about 2:20. A newer one has surfaced without this.

BS: "Thank you very much, thanks a lot."

_Temptation_

Bernard's guitar is delicous here.

Volume gets louder at 4:09.

Last fucking time.

_Sunrise_

Cut after the first minute, alas. (SBD)

_Blue___Monday_

Another one with great guitar work.

Hissing at 3:45. Memorable guitar solo work at about 5:00.

BS: "Thank you very much, good night."

(encore)

_Shellshock_

BS: "Eh, this is Shellshock. The instrumental version."

Which turns out to have vocals. New Order had soundchecked this at two prior gigs, but this is the first time they had aired this one out.

At 1:15, Barney says, "Put more echo on the vocals, Ozzie!" This is in mid-verse, and Barney stops singing for a while. An interesting version, have to study it in a bit of detail, but it seems 90% there in terms of structure if not lyrics, which were likely not completely written.

NO: 27 MAR 86 Apollo Theatre, Oxford

Sounds 12 APR 86

Live review by Jack Barron can be found here.

The cynical and spiteful comments NO was so fond of make did not go unnoticed by Mr. Barron.

http://www.new-order.net/terminal1.demon.co.uk/NewSounds4-86live.htm

Had two versions of this, a somewhat hissy, but good-sounding audience tape, and the ATR/Stash soundboard. I've since gotten a better version of the audience tape. Another audience tape surfaced on DIME in September 2006, this one preserving a bit of Alan Wise's intro.

AW: "An all-feminist camera crew...all-feminist camera crew, and colonel Khadafy's favorite band, number one in Libya, New Order!"

A bunch of "Manchester la-la-la's"...

Bernard's very talkative in this one. He sounds dead pissed. Another good quality recording, but I can't claim to make out all the patter, but it's obvious that the crowd was adoring our Mancunian heroes (not).

_The___Perfect___Kiss_

BS: "Hello, everyone, we're New Order. And this is The Perfect Kiss."

BS: "Thank you very much."

At the end, Bernard strums his guitar and remarks, "It sounds out of tune."

_Everythings___Gone___Green_

You can hear Hooky state "ready, go!" very low in the mix.

Energetic whoop by Mr. Sumner, and then a song intro.

BS: "This is Everything's Gone Green."

He comes in late, missing the first line.

Impressive echo on the "show me" line.

_Broken____Promise_

PH: "Thank you very much indeed."

BS: "I believe this next song is on our next LP, even though we've not recorded it yet, and it's called Broken Promise."

lyric: "The things that mean so much to me, don't mean FUCK ALL to you..." and "If I'm right and you're FUCKING STUPID..."

_Lonesome___Tonight_

BS: "Thank you very much, you're now all getting into it a little bit now...said you're bunch of...you lot...said [unintelligible]...some acoustic..."

Not one of their best renditions, alas.

Different lyric:

"You believe in truth and the purity of youth You believe in live and struggle to get..."

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle_

BS: "'Shut your fucking gobs', as Bernard Manning would say, at two here on 'em" (not 100% sure what he says here).

Philip Collins explains: "Bernard Manning is a fat Mancunian 'comedian' from the old school - i.e. he tells crude, racist, sexist jokes that are usually awful although there's the occasional one that you find yourself laughing to (even though you know you shouldn't!)."

PH: "Yo."

BS: "Okay, I'm ready."

Still has the early-version chorus with "you can take me by the hand..."

lyric: "Wisdom of a cunt will set you free"

(edit in audience tape)

_This___Time___Of___Night_

BS: "Can't understand why we haven't played here in Cambridge in six years."

(turns out that the John Barron quote in the article above merges two different Barney comments, and as a result isn't technically precise)

(adopts fake Oxbridge accent)

BS: "Cuz Y'all so wonderful eh y'all."

Very interestingly, the "fucking boring" bit does NOT appear on the ATR/Stash mixer, but is on the other tape. Could be because the tape was flipped at this point.

_Shellshock_

BS: "This is a very, very, very, very, very new song, and it is called Shellshock, and it's our new single. A lot of people said we can't play it, but some of us know better, don't we?"

(song has a synth line that doesn't appear in the release)

Dropout on left channel between 1:01 and 2:14.

_Ceremony_

BS: "Well, what a tame audience you are. What a bunch of boring cunts you are. Boring, the lot of you. You make me want to...piss myself... (coughs)."

PH: "Don't give a fuck, Ozzie, then."

BS: "We're New Order and we don't care."

PH: "Fuck you."

BS: "Who starts the song?"

PH: (to the audience and at the same time Barney speaking) "That's on cue(?)..."

_Sunrise_

BS: (to stage crew) "...do not. Have you got a cord...cord, please?"

(to taunter) "Shut up, you bastard...(bass riff starts)... "that was a compliment."

Loud feedback at start.

_Face___Up_

BS: "Andy...(unintelligible though loud bass amp feedback)...for this flute(?). Few lights when I'm playing, I can't see what I'm playing. That accounts for the mistakes tonight, everyone."

PH: "Fancy to be in another one after that, eh. Fucking hell. You lucky bastards."

A quick bass scale form the Hookster.

(off mic) "Right?"

Bernard is badly flubbing lyrics throughout the song...

PH: "The [?] comes deaf as we're always deaf."

ATR soundboard tape cuts off at "as".

NO: 28 MAR 86 Brighton Centre - Brighton

Various sources for this gig.

'Funeral For A Viking' is present on one version I have, which has lots of static in the beginning. The other (from a different taper, seeded on DIME by 'dropdeadfr') doesn't have this, but sounds a bit NR'ed and runs a bit fast. It also misses out on the football-style chants of the gathering.

Stephen Smith: "My cassette ran slightly too fast also, plus was a bit overdriven."

Alan Wise introduces things.

AW: "No more than these four young people from Liverpool, they write their own stuff, they're here tonight. Joy Division!"

Stephen's version misses out on the intro.

Hooky soundchecks bass.

BS: "One two". Punter completes this (staticy tape) by saying "three four".

_State___Of___The___Nation_

Stereo field shifts about 2:00 in.

Hooky bass outro.

BS: "Thank you very much."

Some dropouts on Stephen's version.

_Love___Vigilantes_

BS: "Ok" [said very quietly, just before the song starts]

First note from melodica off tune.

BS: "Thank you very much."

Bit of a bass vamp, perhaps from the following song.

_Subculture_

BS: (quietly) "Thank you very much."

PH: "I must say, you bastards wear disgusting shoes."

Someone cries "Fuck off!".

_Shellshock_ follows.

Quite a bit of feedback and soundchecking between this and _Confusion_.

Another long pause.

PH: "Yo! 1-2-3-4."

_Lets___Go_

Interesting version for the synth at the beginning.

BS: "Thanks very much, that was our...commercial break."

Someone in the audience heckles with a "fuck off".

BS: "You fuck off you little cunt. I can see you. In fact, I don't have to look at you, I can smell ya."

_586_

BS: "Hey, stop swearing, this is a family show."

At 1:43, Bernard tells someone else to fuck off. This version has the distinction of having cowbell.

Cut in the dropdeadfr version.

Stephen's cassette cuts here as well.

_Temptation_

Opens with bass refrain before sequencers kick in...and die. Quite an unusual opening as a result.

Ends with a drumbeat, feedback, and another drumbeat. Don't know why I noted that. Bernard coughs.

PH: "All right. Ok [mumbled]"

_Age___Of___Consent_

At 1:05, Bernard says, "Turn up, Gillian". [Stephen notes that the synth bass drone was low in the mix].

_Sunrise_

Distorted on Stephen's cassette.

BS: "You all thought it was the last song, didn't you? Well, it was." Meanwhile, Hooky is playing a strange, meandering tune while Bernard says this.

PH: "Sloppy, Brighton, sloppy. You've got a big mouth, you bastard."

An audience member shouts out "So have you!" back at Hooky, then Hooky replies,

PH: "Fortunately, I'm a lot louder."

The end of this is a huge bass racket, but in a good way.

(encore)

Unidentified PA music, not on Stephen's version. On his, the tapers talk about possible songs, first guy says, "Blue Monday, I'll betcha", then a second guy says "Bizarre Love Triangle." This suggests these tapers were familiar with the NO late '85/early '86 set and were regular attendees.

_The___Perfect___Kiss_

PH: "Any requests."

Most shout out for Blue Monday...somebody near the recording mic yells out "Elegia!" (dropdeadfr version). Stephen's version is missing this shout.

PH: "All the wrong kind of requests, eh?"

lyrics: "fucking strange/fucking deranged" and "my friend took his final piss". So much for this being a "family show".

BS: "[Thank you]? good night. Thanks a lot."

NO: 29 MAR 86 Arts Centre - Poole

Only have the first eight tracks at present. My source is quite hissy, but it's still listenable. I have another version still on tape that's complete, but its a more distant recording.

Punter at the start quite loudly cries out for 'Everything's Gone Green', but we get _Shellshock_ instead.

At about 0:53, Bernard cries for "bass sequencer", since it's inaudible in the mix.

At the end, there's a bit of whooping (by the crowd this time).

BS: "This is another first song, it's called _Bizarre___Love___Triangle."

PH: "Yo."

This is still the "think too much and you might be dead" version.

Bernard's mic cuts out, leaving Hooky's backing vocals audible.

BS: "Thank you very much."

More loud cries for "Ceremony" (and one for Temptation).

Then follows what sounds like the cymbal intro from Western Works demo version, followed by Bernard's quite choppy (and unique) guitar parts before Hooky begins the intro to the next number, which is indeed _Ceremony_.

PH: "See, we ask(?) your opinion of that." (not sure about the first part)

After the song finishes, somebody near the taper says someting like "it's murder, it's all right", and there's a couple more utterings before the start of _Your___Silent___Face_.

(at the end)

BS: "More light on this (my?) side of the stage please, Andy."

A punter yells out "Sunrise" twice, but instead the band start in on _Sooner___Than___We___Think_.

More whooping.

BS: "The next one's an instrumental, I had a request for it before in the pub." Which means, _Lets___Go_.

Someone says 'Let's Go' at the end, The same punter as before cries out for 'Sunrise' once more.

Hooky says something I can't make out, maybe something about the Conservative party? More 'Sunrise' and a clever one, 'Where's yer beard?'.

_State___Of___The___Nation_ follows.

Ends with feedback. punter: "Decades! So, it's a good track. It might be the encore if we're lucky. Decades!"

_Temptation_

This fades out before the very end on the incomplete version.

_Face___Up_ follows.

_Blue___Monday_

Sound of a guitar lead getting unplugged between the last song and this.

BS: "This song is called Brue Monday"

Right before the break, Bernard makes the startling pronouncement that "Howard Jones is a cunt".

BS: "Thank you, good night"

BS: "We played at a lot of clubs..."

Bernard and Hooky than have an exchange which I can't quite make out.

_This___Time___Of___Night_ follows.

And then _Love___Will___Tear___Us___Apart_ to finish things off.

NO: 14 JUN 86 Town Hall - Sheffield

Tape courtesy of TJ, which as provided ran about 50 cents fast. I have another one that's a M/1 copy, in a CH-designed photocopied sleeve, which is a different (superior) source. And a third source has made available courtesy of TBB and Tock, which has preserved the full compere introduction, by none other than Terry Wogan!

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terry_Wogan for info about him.

TW: [trills] "Ladies and gentleman, my name's Terry Wogan. Good evening to ya. How ya doin'? Well, Terry Wogan, told you once. This evening, I'm going to introduce some of the fine acts on stage tonight. Amongst them, Billy Bragg, the inspirational choir, a newly (?), you're enjoying a dance routine from a local school in Pitsmore, dancing to music. So much for Pitsmore, dancing to music, courtesy of Cabaret Voltaire. And now, live on stage, a group from the heart of Manchester. They have come all the way across the Pennines in a helicopter, just to see you. The one and only New Order!"

Chants of "Here we go, here we go..."

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle_

BS: "Well, erm, hope that this isn't a letdown after that introduction. If I know it, it probably will be."

lyric: "I feel good, and I feel fine, I feel like a big fat swine." lyric: "Keep your thoughts inside you head, you think too much, and you'll be dead."

Very good guitar break.

BS: "Thanks very much."

_This___Time___Of___Night_

BS: "Thanks very much."

_Everythings___Gone___Green_

BS: "This is Everything's Gone Green."

Somebody yells out "1-2-3-4".

PH: "Same old boring bastards here. Some things never change." He adds, "You know, what's the point?" Barney coughs as he strums his guitar.

PH: "Any more requests?"

_The___Perfect___Kiss_ follows.

_Sooner___Than___You___Think_

As TJ comments, quite a big Gillian howler on the intro, though it sounds like her synth mysteriously detuned more than just bad playing.

_As___It___Is___When___It___Was_

Major bump about 2:10 in, with a tape dropout. The CH version is clean.

BS: "One two, one two, one two, one..." (not present on CH version, which has an edit at this point)

_Subculture_ follows.

(at end)

PH: "It's no [?], death when you're thirty, y'know?" (not present on TJ version)

_Age___Of___Consent_

Takes a bit of time to get this one started, but once they do...

_Sunrise_

Tape garble at 1:35 on TJ, version, not on CH.

lyric: "Your name might be God but you don't fucking say that much to me..."

Further garbles at 3:35 and 3:50 (TJ), not on CH.

BS: "Too much gone(?)".

NO: 21 JUN 86 Loughborough University

It's pronounced "Lofbrow".

Tape taken from TJ.

His notes:

"One of two copies I have, this is marginally better, but really annoyingly has Blue Monday chopped off on tape flip (30 seconds worth). It's like that on the master (this is M1) as the first two minutes of tape were the viking intro, which I edited out."

Recently, another version has showed up on DIME, that *does* have BM complete as well as Bernard's intro to Face UP.

_State___Of___The___Nation_

BS: "What...where's Hooky?" [not sure of wording]

Guitar stumming.

Bernard's singing of the chorus here is more emphatic than usual.

BS: "Thank you very much."

_Everythings___Gone___Green_

A short, under-four minute version. Ending in Hooky dual note solo plus vamp. About 20 seconds of silence between tracks.

_The___Perfect___Kiss_

BS: "Thanks very much."

A short silence before the Order play _Sunrise_.

Pop at 3:22. (TJ version)

BS: "Thanks very much."

Sounds of guitars getting unplugged.

You can hear a punter at this point saying, "I'll meet you outside..."

_Sooner___Than___You___Think_

Mic gets bumped at 4:07 or so. (TJ version)

BS: "Thank you very much. That's the person in front spitting at me has to stop. Cuz I know who it is. And there's already somebody coming out there that's gonna find him."

_This___Time___Of___Night_

lyric: "We all feel the same, all pleasure and fuck all to gain."

Hooky's backing vocals come in late, and Bernard flubs the "without you I've gone insane" lyric, and appears to be making it up as he's going along, as he can't quite remember the words.

BS: "While we're gonna play..." [can't make out rest of what he's saying, too much reverb on his vocals, any assistance would be appreciated!] (I can pick up "completely out of...")

_Blue___Monday_

Audience chants along to intro. TJ's version cuts at 6:13.

_Face___Up_

BS: "Thank you very much. Bear with us a bit... Thank you, stop the spitting as well, I appreciate it. Even though the spit was very nice, very nice, the best spit I ever have."

Pretty chaotic start to this one. Bernard sounds like he's saying "Fuck off" at 1:50.

Interesting segue into _Temptation_.

The band completely lose it at about 4:45 or so, and Barney starts to make up lyrics. Despite the reputation New Order have as a sloppy live band, they rarely lose it like this...there's a transfer problem at this point as well, just to compound things.

BS: "Thanks very much."

_Age___Of___Consent_

Good version.

BS: "Thank you very much, good night!". Ends in feedback as the Order leave the stage.

TJ titles the interstital between main gig and encore "Surplus rupture".

Somebody makes an announcement which mentions "Loughbrough", but I'm not sure.

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle_

BS: "Thank you" (not present in TJ version, but in newly surfaced source)

Still has early "keep your thoughts inside your head, you think too much, you'll be dead" lyric.

BS: "Thanks a lot, good night."

Ends with house backing track similar to the 'Vikings' theme. (TJ)

NO: 29 JUN 86 Valdarno - San Giovanni, Italy

Source taken from an AM (medium-wave) broadcast, which a huge amount of voiceover (in Italian). There's also an audience version, which has also been factored into this transcription.

There's a fair degree of uncertainty regarding this date, based on the setlist and what the insert on the cassette I pulled the audience version from, this is the best guess, but other sources have given September 1986.

There's an announcer voiceover before the first song on the AM version, while we hear a bit of bass and guitar before the start of _Subculture_.

lyric: "I leave round in your cock..." lyric: "You realize you drink shite without someone else"

There's a stereo shift at 2:08, followed by a cut at 2:10, and restoration of the proper sound at 2:14.

BS: "Thank you very much, thank you very much indeed."

BS: "Thank you very much. We are from England. Manchester, England. Football. Manchester United."

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle_ follows.

Hooky calls out "Yo!" off mic after the song finishes.

He also sounds like he's playing Hendrix on bass, a mini-jam before the dulcet tones of _State___Of___The___Nation_ wend to the ears of the listener.

A really loud "woo" through the chorus, ends on a bass bit.

BS: "Thank you very much indeed. What, play music? we don't know the meaning of the word. I've heard it from time to time. But we don't play it."

_The___Perfect___Kiss_

Quite likely the worst performance of this song ever.

Hooky's intro is in the wrong key, it sounds like.

For some inexplicable version, Bernard starts with the second verse. And his singing is very off-key.

Hooky calls out for something at 6:05 and repeats it ten seconds later. Sounds like "Eric Boulton."

BS: "Thank you very much. We're still with you, even though it may not look like it, we're all still here. Meant to pull...[word] weakly, of course."

_Lonesome___Tonight_ is missing from the FM recording, but is present on the audience version. And a delicously ropey version of it, too.

_Dreams___Never___End_

PH: "What is it, Oz? Do you know?" (referring to the static hum?)

First portion of DNE is missing from the FM version.

On the AM version, there's an interlude of about 2:50 on my recording with the announcer talking over music (not New Order).

_Face___Up_ follows.

lyric: "As we get old, our faces get drunk/ When we we are young, we are always bored"

The song breaks down, and Bernard clears his throat and laughs.

BS: "What an ending, what an ending."

_Temptation_

BS: "Try for the next song. A bit more vocals through the side fills, Ed."

Quick fadeout/fadein at about the 3:50 point, quite likely at the A/B flip. The audience version has this as well, though obviously, the split is at a different point.

_Age___Of___Consent_

Another edit in the broadcast, Bernard's introduction isn't fully captured on the AM recording, but is present in the audience version:

BS: "Thank you very much. Anybody got a quid they could lend us? Don't understand, eh...don't understand a fucking word I'm saying... apart from that one word I just said."

Bernard nearly breaks out laughing through the chorus at one point.

Announcer talks over the track starting at the 3:28 point, and right through the last track of the broadcast, which isn't either Blue Monday or Your Silent Face, as they aren't present on the AM version.

_Blue___Monday_

BS: "Thank you again...I'm going to..." A series of cymbal crashes intrerrupts him, and he makes a sound like coughing.

End of main set. Audience recording has a couple of 'squeal' edits.

_Your___Silent___Face_

A fade-in on the audience recording.

_Sunrise_

AM version has announcers talking at the beginning.

PH: (off-mic) "Ready, Gillian?"

High pitched wailing guitar solo near the end.

NO: 19 JUL 86 Manchester Exhibition Center (GMEX)

The sound quality on my source is very good, but there are a couple of technical problems with the media marring my initial glowing appraisal. Still, not bad for a festival marking the 10th anniversary of punk.

Snotters has subsequently shared the version he received from Lazlo, taped from Picadilly Radio.

Writeup

Weird guitar noises and tape hiss great the entering listener. This may have been from a soundcheck or may be completely unrelated. The FM version has none of this, of course.

Some muttering at the beginning that I have no hope of ever making out.

PH: "Does anyone speak English? Is anyone from England?"

Some folks actually say "yeah".

PH: "That's OK, I got the Schnapps."

Onward...

AN: "Thank you Collusion(?). Good evening, who do you think is the best popular music group in the world? I think it's New Order!"

(audience approves and starts calling out

The announcer-type entity says it again...)

AN: "Who do you think is the best popular music group in the world?" (gee, who?)

AN: "I think it's New Order!"

Somebody calls out "C'mon, you bastard!"

Then chants of "Here we go...", to the melody of some tune everybody knows but I can't recall the name of offhand.

AN: "Who do you think is the best popular music group in the world? New Order!"

Barney and co. then take the stage.

BS: "Hello, Rome(?), we're New Order". Then we hear a sound that's a cross between a kiss and a guitar being plugged in.

BS: "Guitar between the foldback, yah. Yo!"

_Elegia_

The announcer talks over the track at about the 0:25 point, bah.

Announcer: "The Festival Of The Tenth Summer, from GMEX. Peter Hook, Gillian Gilbert, Stephen Morris, Bernard Sumner, New Order!"

BS: "Thanks very much."

(loud calls of State of the Nation, and Warsaw ;-)

BS: "Now we're gonna liven up a bit now, for a song that's got singing in it. (a few seconds later) Bass sequencer."

_Shellshock_

There's some synthesis going on here that sounds different than what I hear in the released versions. I especially like the statacco keyboard line.

The lyrics are also a bit different, too:

"I've been good and and I've been bad but/ A fucking twat I've never had/
You know where you used to be/
Your happiness(?) felt so close to me"

"That's the way that I can't win/
A victim of the state I'm in..."

(instead of a victim of your evil sin)

On the FM version, the vocals get distant and fuzzy at about the 0:50 mark.

(punter: Ceremony!)

Announcer comments "New Order, GMEX. Play some new songs, after the break".

_Paradise_

BS: "Eh, this next song's a new song off our new LP, called Paradise. The song is called Paradise, the LP isn't."

A fairly intense version, of the song ensues. Sumner's vocals are deliciously overstrained.

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle_

PH: "This one's for the, eh, next generation of the Blackburn Lads. We all know what the Blackburn Lads get up to, don't we?"

The lyrics vary a bit from standard, but more along the lines of phrasing, not content. The volume starts shifting around about 3/4's of the way in, like the taper's getting sloshed around.

BS: "Thank you very much. Thank you very very very much, very very much."

_Way___Of___Life_

The debut performance.

BS: "This is a new song now, another new song. Some of us are playing new songs tonight, and some of us aren't..."

(connotations?)

Near the end there's a pop...probably present in the MP3 dub, not in the original.

Announcer: "Recorded live at GMEX by Picadilly Radio, New Order, back soon."

_State___Of___The___Nation_

BS: "Thank you thank you, we're getting into it now, getting into it."

Punters call out for "We All Stand" and "Leave Me Alone"...

This doesn't appear at all on the FM version, it seems.

_Face___Up_

BS: "You shall get, shall get, you shall get spoke to me, you twat, that I can see you. I have all these people down here you're bumping into that are getting annoyed."

A bit hard to make out, I probably don't have the wording right. Naturally, this is faded/edited out of the FM airing.

The sound suddenly cuts out...and Face Up is cued back again at start. Weird. This tape might be an amalgamation of different sources.

Barney giggles at one point in this, after singing "Don't let anybody tell you that you're a cunt, because it's not OK".

BS: "Thank you very much, we love you all, each and every one of ya. Personally. You know me, ah, right right right right, yeah."

_The___Perfect___Kiss_

BS: (at 0:15) "Vodka, vodka, it's vodka. It's vodka."

(seems to be missing from the audience version or I didn't note it)

Barney is laughing through quite a few vocal lines.

The audience version Has a cut about halfway through...it picks up a little before where it left off...but the sound is muffled. There's another cut out later.

Announcer: "New Order at GMEX as part of the Festival Of The Tenth Summer, will be back after a moment."

_Ceremony_

BS: "Thank you very much. Eh, we got a singer coming on to sing the last song. He doesn't swear as much as me."

Ian McCulloch, of course.

FM cuts the introduction out entirely.

The muffling clears up by the time the vocals come in.

A portion of the performance was televised on "Make Of Europe" which appeared on UK TV in 1988. McCulloch is singing with a cigarette in his right hand. Hooky joins him at the same mic at one point during the chorus. Mac adds his trademark vocals to the mix.

IM: "Thank you very much, fucker!"

I guess they exchange thanks, or something. Yeah. :)

_Temptation_

BS: "This is a bit of an obvious song for an encore, but it's a very nice song, I hope you all like it. It's a very nice song actually, very very very nice. It's like those old good goodbyes, you know."

PH: "See you in 10 years."

The "Viking Theme" music streams in after they finish up.

Announcer: "The Festival Of The Tenth Summer, New Order and The Smiths at GMEX. Recorded by Pete Johnson and Mike Thornton. Remixed at Strawberry Studios by Chris Nagle. Produced for Picadilly Radio by Mark Radcliffe."

NO: 16 AUG 86 Valby Copenhagen Denmark

Source is a third-gen audio recording.

_The___Perfect___Kiss_

BS: "Comms(?) a bit louder, Ed, and the punters..."

Break at 4:20.

BS: "Thank you very much indeed, thanks very much. Jacko, if it's not too much trouble, I'd like to use the semi-acoustic, please, on our next song.

_Sooner___Thank___You___Think_

Feedback squall.

BS: "This is a song off of Lowlife, called Sooner Than You Think."

Features a profanity, "you know what I fucking need."

Taper coughts between songs.

A Hooky five-note rifflet before the next number, _Paradise_.

BS: "Bass sequencer up."

(at end)

BS: "Thank you very much.

_Way___Of___Life_

Second performance, the first being G-MEX's.

BS: "Thank you very much. That was a new song, this is a new song as well, it's called Way Of Life. If we got a...[can't make out]..."

During the intro, Bernard emits a "Woo"...

BS: "Eddie, try it on Gillian's guitar(?)"

_Sunrise_ follows.

_Every___Little___Counts_

The debut performance of this song!

Bernard mutters the first line, "Every little pig..." and follows it up with "Think you are a pig, you should be in a zoo.", earlier than the normal sequence of the song.

Echoing "woos" after the first verse.

BS: "Thank you very much, that's another new song, it's on Benny(?) and [something]...bear it and stay with us...wish I could speak Swedish.... Danish, Danish, Danish! Oh, it's a...[something] aren't you." Then he says something about cheap shots. Much of this is very difficult to make out, alas.

_Blue___Monday_ then follows.

Lots of off-kilter clapping along here.

BS: "Thanks a lot, thank you very much indeed. BUt I could like anything." I could like...boys with big dicks."

_The___Village_

Bernard mutters something.

PH: "Sick beats."

BS: "You big bastard."

Edit in tape (A/B). A bit of noodling before _Broken___Promise_.

Bernard's vocals are low in the mix.

BS: "Thank you very much."

_Age___Of___Consent_

Bernard yells "Slow down!!" after singing the first line of the song, I guess Mr. Morris was really plowing his way through this.

_Temptation_

BS: "This song was Christ if he never got crucified".

A notable quotable if I ever heard one.

There's a cut in Temptation at about 5:00 which seems to correspond with the flip TPK cut on the A-side.

NO: 10 SEP 86 Mayfair - Newcastle, England

From http://www.neworderonline.com/thread.asp?thread_id=1553&forum_id=1

Martin Gray writes:
(he was off by a month on the date)

Anybody catch New Order in October 1986 at Newcastle Mayfair on the Brotherhood tour? Bloody hell - remember those wankers at the front, shouting Manchester, Manchester, in Geordie accents. I mean, what was the point of that??

The gig wasn't that brilliant, all told - we heard a few newies from Fac 150 but I couldn't concentrate on enjoying the songs cuz of those knobs at the front baying like they were at some footie match up the road at St. James.

(I think it was also about this time that many New Order fans had gained the footie-yob reputation that everyone knows and loves/hates now, but don't quote me on it!)

We got one encore - The Perfect Kiss, and then an hour after it started, NO left. And the last thing I heard from some of the footie hordes at the front? "THEY WERE SHIT!!" FUCKING SHIT!!"

You know something? I've never seen New Order live since......fuck knows
why......

NORDERPHILE adds

I remeber Newcastle Mayfair, you failed to add the plastic 'glasses' of beer lobbed off the balcony.

Transcription

This is taken from a CH M/2. Clear recording, but fairly hissy. There are several other versions as well.

Alan Wise _Intro_

AW: "Ladies and gentlemen, some problems if all the way comes to showtime, it's all smiles, NEW ORDER!"

_State___Of___The___Nation_

BS: "Hello everyone. Hope we deserve it."

SOTN is played.

BS: "Thanks very much."

Hooky plays a mysterious bass riff in between songs.

_Everythings___Gone___Green_

BS: "Thanks very much."

_Weirdo_ follows.

At this point there sounds like much shouting. Barney singles out someone shouting out a bit too loudly.

BS: "You are an idiot. Stop swearing in here."

_Angel___Dust_

(at end)

BS: "Sorry for trying out these new songs but we gotta try them out somewhere, haven't we?" [not sure if last word is "right", but it makes most sense in that particular context]

BS: "But at least we're playing new songs."

At this point somebody yells loudly, "Turn the fucker off a couple of times", to which Barney replies, "We are playing these songs. Stop swearing!". At this point, the sequencer to _Paradise_ starts.

BS: "Thank you very much, we're getting into it now, we're getting into it."

Bernard says something I can't make out, probably directed towards the git shouting for Warsaw and Transmission. :)

_Weirdo_

Feedback squall partway into it. My tape has a brief dropout during the last verse. Ends in feedback. Edit in tape at this point.

_Confusion_

At the end of this, a lot more of the loudmouth.

Hooky tells him to shut up.

_Subculture_

(at end)

BS: "Thank you very much indeed, I'm feeling very [something]."

Punters start shouting "here we go" a couple of times.

_Age___Of___Consent_ follows.

BS: "I'd like to dedicate this next song to my cousin Tommy who lives in the South in, er, Scotland.

Bernard sings "a few months ago" instead of the usual "a few days ago".

BS: "Shut up. The fuckin' lot of you in the dressing room which is over there after the gig. Me, personally."

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle concludes the main set.

Music between set and encore.

_The___Perfect___Kiss_

BS: "Thank you very much, don't deserve it."

NO: 11 SEP 86 Playhouse Theatre, Edinburgh, Scotland

Sources:

#1 I have as a CD copy from a 'five hates six', sourced by TJ, has quite a bit of audience chatter in it and suffers from "down in front" syndrome, with quite a few shifts in the stereo field as the taper moves around.

#2 is in my collection, and seems to have been taped farther back, and arguably sounds better, though it lacks the charm of being there. Sound is very good, albeit perhaps second generation.

Stephen Smith says his cassette is akin to #2 above.

Description on the Waterrat gig page was that NO apparently didn't care for the audiences in Edinburgh, which is bourne out in the performance.

Stephen has a bit more to say about that, as he was at this show:

"I'd say more than anything the problem was with the venue itself. The Playhouse is all seated, making it hellish for really getting into the music. I've seen a few bands there and it's been the same thing every time (stuck between rows of seats).

It's funny, it seems folk weren't too chuffed with the amount of new songs. For me, that was the best thing about the gig. Angel Dust sounded fantastic with the whole spaghetti western thing going on, All Day Long sounded great and Barney's Jolene refrains in Paradise stuck in my head like nobody's business. The big arpeggio lines in Bizarre Love Triangle leapt out as well. Those were the best things about the gig for me whilst I can't even recall the performances of Ceremony, Temptation and the likes. Then again, it was only my second NO gig and I was desperate to hear their new stuff."

_Angel___Dust_

The synth parts are loud in comparison to the rest of the elements in the mix.

BS: "Thank you very much, that's a new song called Angel Dust."

New Order play _State___Of___The___Nation_ and _Way___Of___Life_ pretty much straight through. The part before Hooky's bass solo break features one nice feedback screech. Well, Barney does throw out the following lyric:

BS: "Who the fuck do you think you're pissed off at me!"

_Paradise_

BS: "I'm afraid we've got a bit of a run of new songs here. Hope you all like them."

TJ adds:

"The guy shouting out was shouting "Pish" rather than "Kiss" as he wasn't over-enamoured with the band playing a new songs set two years in a row at Embra !"

The bass synth starts in badly out of time.

_All___Day___Long_

Starts out with bass synth instead of bells. Barney's vocals seem particularly flat, although the music is as gorgeous as ever. Hooky flubs his solo a little bit...and the ending consists of bass feedback and plucking.

_Thieves___Like___Us_ is played straight through.

Stephen's version of the recording has a big, sharp cut just before the end of the song.

Vocals come in a bit late.

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle_

PH: "So [Mark|Martin]?, you've never waited for an Emulator to load before?".

_Subculture_

BS: "Sorry, I'm a bit tired tonight. For a very good reason."

_Ceremony_

BS: "What a fucking wild audience you are, it's like something out of the fucking Blues Brothers, innit? Don't need no chicken wire with you lot...do I? Should(n't) have to do more (than, or I) swear"

Stephen: "I remember his chicken wire comment, strange moment when you're seeing a band you love and you can tell it's a rotten night for them."

One one of the audience tapes you can here what the punters are yelling back stuff like "You're fucking brillant, asshole! Play some music, asshole!"

Heh..."Forever...watching the bitch..."

_Temptation_

BS: "Turn the lights down Andy,I can see what I'm doing."

Stephen: "The implication being he wasn't particularly desperate to get it right when the audience was so stoic and undeserving."

Bernard begins a muted guitar strum (Are You Experienced!) before the rest of the song kicks in. "ooh...it's the last fucking time" also makes an appearance...there's a couple other F-words in this as well.

Soundcheck

Also have a copy of the soundcheck that was torrented on EZT. I keep waffling back and forth regarding whether this is soundboard or audience sourced, though I'm leaning now towards this being from an audience tape (probably Sony WM-D6 with good mics).

Excellent sound quality, though there are skips during the first bit of _Love___Will___Tear___Us___Apart_.

_All___Day___Long_

BS: "Where's the snare, Oz, where's the snare?"

Bernard mutters something at the "Now I hope you know this..." bit. (1:13)

BS: "Emulator, Ed...this Emulator...[can't make out]" (2:56)

BS: "Just a little bit without...can you turn the...off...Oz?"

_Angel___Dust_

BS: "that, that...the top line's a bit loud...just a bit..." (0:56)

BS: "That sound...that melody sounds like it's gone down(?) [can't totally make out]" (1"57)

Some string synth samples follow, and then silence....with a repeat of the sequencer motif.

_As___It___Was___When___It___Was_

Hooky countin: "three-four".

_Weirdo_

First few seconds sound muted.

_Every___Little___Counts_

Clear edit. Barney mumbles something a few seconds in.

BS: "We're getting a bass...through here, just coming out front..." (0:37). Bass levels in the recording cut out until 1:02.

BS: "Turn the Emulator [mumble] bass up...turn the Emulator bass up... [Bernard mumbles something else I can't decipher] (1:40)

BS: "Whoa!" (2:08)

_Lonesome___Tonight_

Starts with a orchestral synth riffs along with the bass guitar.

Bernard asks to turn something up. (1:28)

And asks for "...more acoustic...just a little bit..." (1:41)

And mutters for something else a bit later.

_Shellshock_

Very interesting repeating "knock" effect in this one. Very good instrumental version, one of the best I've heard.

According to 'Old Blue' you can hear Oz make some quip about always doing an instrumental version from now on.

_Sooner___Than___You___Think_

False start (to 0:15). Clicking at about 0:25. Instrumental version.

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle_

Still different as it appeared on record.

NO: 12 SEP 86 Barrowlands - Glasgow, Scotland

From: "Colin Kerr"

> Fair enough but it pissed me off many times the scant regard they showed. I > don't mind bands saying nothing or having a laugh but when they, or rather > Barney deliberately riled the crowd it was just boring and childish. Three > times they played Edinburgh and three times Barney baited the crowd and said > some really stupid things. And setlists? Yeah in the early/mid 80s it was > good but they took it to some stupid extremes is Edinburgh 11/09/86 - check > out the setlist and you work out how many had been released by then. One or > two from memory. Fair enough again if it was a diehard small crowd but this > was 1900 or so in Edinburgh's biggest theatre and then the next night in > Glasgow a favourites set with the usual 'we love Glasgow, we hate Edinburgh' > speech. The irony being that that night there were at least 7 buses through > from Edinburgh. There were many crap NO shows I went to in that time > especially when I travelled 100s of miles to see them then they were too > pissed to play properly. That used to get to me.

Personally, I think that the unreleased stuff is a bit more interesting to hear, but Colin's talking about the live experience, not what's more interesting from a listening standpoint.

Source for this one is Malcolm Beaton, with sound nearly perfect.

_Your___Silent___Face_

Marred *very* slightly by some lass chatting away on the right channel.

BS: "We love you!" (cheers, amid guitar strumming) "Whoa..."

lyrics: "You caught me at a bad time (Barney then adds 'You little twat')." Audience sings the "piss off!" part (which isn't sung by Sumner).

_Dreams___Never___End_ and _Face___Up_ are bolts of pure energy.

BS: "Thank you very much."

PH: "That's the quickest that I've been called off on this tour."

_Age___Of___Consent_ then follows.

BS: "Thank you very much! This is is a new song, eh, you may know I need my Mach 2 guitar for this because...a much [strum] different song. I hope you like it, it's called [as song starts] _Every___Little___Counts_."

lyrics: Barney sings 'cunt' instead of 'pig'. He also coughs as Hooky cuts him off at the end of the first stanza.

lyric: "Even though you're stupid, i still fuck the ass up you!"

(at the end)

BS: "More guitar through the foldback, Ed, please."

_As___It___Is___When___It___Was_

Barney sings "makes you fucking see".

End of this song has a brief right channel dropout.

"Velvet glove" tacked on acapella at the end of the song.

BS: "My guitar is out of tune."

Long pause as Bernard strums it a bit.

_Broken___Promise_

BS: "Another new song, I'm afraid, it's called 'Broken Promises'. I'm glad someone likes it, I fucking don't."

_Temptation_

BS: "Thank you again, thank you very much. Ingratiate(?) me, personally ingratiate(?) me. I much...much prefer Glasgow to Edinburgh as well, I must admit. What a bunch of twats they were last night, I tell you. Hurt my feeling a bit...[can't make out last mumbled word]"

(Before the first verse)

BS: "Turn the lights down over there..."

lyric: "People in this fucking world..." and of course "last fucking time"...

Cut here for A/B change.

_Sunrise_

PH: "Ready, punters?"

lyric: "Your name might be God but you don't say that much to Michael Jackson."

_Love___Will___Tear___Us___Apart_

PH: "This one's for uh, a dear friend of ours who couldn't be with us tonight, because she' dead, so here we go, 1-2-3-4!"

Keyboard comes in strangely.

Backing tape comes on. Then an edit. The encore is upon us.

_The___Perfect___Kiss_

Barney says something off-mic.

BS: "Then again, I'm a limey twat. This is The Perfect Kiss...played perfectly by New Order".

(for all of about a second)

BS: (during intro, right before Hooky's riff, probably directed at audience antics): "Do it again, do it again, do it again, I love it!"

Chanting throughout.

BS: "Thank you very much. We may be miserable bastards, but we enjoyed ourselves. Without drugs. I don't like it!"

_Blue___Monday_

The fans sing the first three lines before Bernard's vocals come in.

(during break between verses)

BS: "You were fucking singing it a lot better than me!"

Ends in bass feedback.

BS: "Thank you very much for a most enjoyable evening!"

One second of the backing music before tape runs out.

NO; 13 SEP 86 Caird Hall - Dundee Scotland

TJ writes:

"Caird Hall, Dundee. The town that life forgot. My 20th birthday. A Greek temple in the town centre. Tickets said Doors 7.30pm unless I am very much mistaken. One of the fastest sets ever, full set of ten plus two encore tracks in less than an hour, which included 9 minutes of Perfect Kiss and a usual length State of the Nation. Set felt similar to Edinburgh. Saturday night. Long way home.

If there was a second set that night, I must have missed it, and so did everyone else in the venue !!"

Trevor writes:

Hi, my account of the New Order gig at Dundee Caird Hall, 13/09/86:

I travelled down from Aberdeen with a group of my mates, looking forward to seeing New Order live for the first time. The support act were competent but totally unappreciated by the Dundee crowd who were clearly there only to see New Order. When New Order eventually took the stage, they were greeted by a rousing reception. Despite this good reception, Barney played most of the gig with his back to the crowd and the band looked like they would rather have been somewhere else. Nevertheless, the band went through the motions and pulled off a musically and technically proficient and entertaining set. After the band finished, some of the Dundee crowd complained that the set was too short; that there was no encore; and that there was no Blue Monday. However, I travelled back to Aberdeen (after spending a fortune on T-shirts and badges!) more than happy after what I considered to be a great night’s entertainment.

I have no recollection of an encore and this perhaps explains the comment 'The band leave and then come back for an encore. The audience cheering, etc. between these is cut out on my version'.

At the end I remember lots of boos from the audience.

Posted on Neworderonlie.com many years ago.. http://www.neworderonline.com/Live/Concert.aspx?ConcertID=129

Regards, Trevor

The gig:

_Paradise_

A bit of tune-up.

BS: "Hello, everyone, we're New Order!"

After...

BS: "Thanks a lot."

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle_ follows.

_Everythings___Gone___Green_

BS: "Turn the lights down a bit, Andy."

_State___Of___The___Nation_

Brief tape garble at 1:55 or so.

_Lonesome___Tonight_

lyric: "many times before did you did you despair in your sleep, hear a solemn voice that couldn't even speak."

Hooky plays a unique-sounding rift in front of _This___Time___Of___Night_.

Cut in tape between this and the next song, _Angel___Dust_.

_Weirdo_ is next up.

A tape edit between the end of this song and _Sunrise_.

_The___Perfect___Kiss_

Barney pipes up for his first pronouncement of the night.

BS: "We ain't playing Age Of Consent...because we played it last night. We don't feel like playing it. We do what we want to do. That's because we're all big boys in Caird."

The band leave and then come back for an encore. The audience cheering, etc. between these is cut out on my version.

_Ceremony_ and _Face___Up_ concludes the set.

(at the start of the latter)

BS: "Who needs fucking guitar solos, anyway?. I'll get it right this way."

NO: 02 OCT 86 Tower Ballroom - Birmingham, England

Multiple sources for this one. Review based on first-gen cassette in my archives, which while very good isn't even the best sounding version, which will be written up at some future time.

Stephen Smith: "I think my tape is along the same lines as yours. Mine has a somewhat crunchy sound all the way through, listenable but far from perfect. The Order take the stage to loud whistling."

BS: "Thanks very much, we've not even played yet."

Accompanied by Hooky thwaking his bass a few times.

_Sooner___Than___You___Think_

Everything is in sync for this one, with aptly timed feedback squalls.

Hooky twangs his bass after it finishes.

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle_

PH: "Alright, punters! This is Biz...Bizarre...Love...Triangle." (pronouncing the song title really slowly)

BS: "Thank you very much."

Shouts from the audience.

BS: "We're gonna play a new song, now, it's called 'Sellsock'."

He's slurs this fairly badly, the spelling above being a more accurate rendition of the pronounciation than the proper title.

Punter yells out "1-2-3-4".

Echoed whoop during the intro. Really good performance.

_Sunrise_

On the TJ version, some punter repeats "Fuck off" about three times.

BS: "Thank you very much, we're gonna play a song for our meatheads in the audience now...you got a drink, Terry?"

Fans cheer when they hear the opening synth swath.

At the point where Bernard strums his guitar during the intro, a punter near the taper can be heard saying, "Change...[something] tonight." (about the setlist?) Somebody else cries, "Is it going on?" (this is on my M/1, but can be heard on the TJ version as well, which makes me wonder if they're the same source)

[These are on Stephen's copy as well.]

More bass thumps at the end of the song.

_Thieves___Like___Us_

PH: "Any requests?

Punter calls out for Temptation.

PH: "Who's that fucker? I did that in Glasgow."

BS: "This is a song we've not played for a long time. But we're gonna play it just for you lot."

lyric: "Love is the air that supports the fucking eagle."

BS: "What a song, what a song. The lyrics are just poetry. [punter utters foulmouthed broadside] How can you swear after a song like that?"

He sounds justiably proud of this masterpiece,

_Paradise_

'The Bird' talks during the intro.

BS: "Right, we're going to attempt something off our new LP, Brotherhood, now. It's called 'Paradise'"

lyric: "I looked you into your fucking eyes, I saw you everywhere."

At the end, Hooky throws out the bassline to of all things, Exercise One!

BS: "Michael Jackson, did someone shout 'Michael Jackson'? He's alright, actually, Michael Jackson, I like him, he's good."

_Confusion_ follows. The master tape apparently suffers from a bit of warbliness at this point, which is not unknown from other tapes from this source. This Barney throws out a real "wanky" guitar solo during this song.

Lots of shoutouts at this point with somebody blowing a whistle.

Hooky says something that is obscured by Barney strumming his guitar. Something like, "Someone got a gram then..." He then follows this up with, "been cribbing, you bastards." (in reference to TJ yelling out the song title right before!)

_Broken___Promise_

This song is LOUD, there's feedback nearly through the entire length.

A/B cut at the end of this.

_Temptation_

BS: "There's still no cure even after that.

On my archives tape, the left channel levels are low (it's unbalanced). I haven't tried to correct it. The TJ bit is cut, and is missing the introduction, it seems.

[Stephen's tape doesn't have this defect.]

Has the "uno-dos-tres-cuatro" bit.

Barney goes swear-mad near the end of this incendiary version of this song.

Between this song and the next there's some hard rock-like guitar riffing, not something you'd normally associate with these guys.

_Ceremony_

Another wanky guitar bit provided by Bernard.

PH: "And how do you follow that, you may say? Well, this is how."

The crowd cheers.

_State___Of___The___Nation_

Has more of the warbliness that Confusion (in the same position on the A side) had. Again, probably an issue with the master. Not present in the TJ version, which does have a dropout (stereo shift) between 0:16 and 0:45, and again between 1:30 - 1:40. [Stephen's tape doesn't have this dropout]

BS: "Thank you very much, good night!" Hooky ends it all with bass pyrotechnics.

The band leave the stage and there's an edit. On the TJ group, the PA music has some funky-type music with female vocals.

They come back for the encore, and a very annoying loudmouth hurling invective at the group.

BS: "You ready, you ready?"

BS: "Shh...Fucking shut up a minute, already?"

punter: "Fucking pop group!"

PH: "Oh, a fucking pop group, eh? What's wrong with fucking pop groups? You're at the front, you cunt. This one's for, er, Happy Mondays."

BS: "Come on stage and say that you fucking twat. [Hooky: "Oh"] Wha'? Come up. C'mon. Come up. Come on stage. Come on stage!"

(both Barney and Hooky accompany their baiting with instrumentation)

PH: "Go on!"

BS: "You! Come on stage."

Fans cheer loudly as I presume said punter presumably gets cold feet and runs off.

BS: "We might be a pop group, but you're a fucking wanker."

This garners a tremendous response.

_Weirdo_

BS: "That weirdo! One two three four, one two three."

Tremendous amount of energy, probably only bettered in their Byron Bay '87 performance.

_The___Perfect___Kiss_

BS: "That's a piss-up. Ain't we tough, ain't we tough. I'm sorry if we offended you before by the way. I didn't mean it. Cuz I love everybody, I love everyone. Everyone."

The TJ version has a garble at about 0:47, and another shortly after 2:00, with a few others throughout. Hooky makes an utterance about 4:10.

This source also includes the following soundcheck tracks:

_Sooner___Than___You___Think_

At the end Barney says, "The only way...[can't make out rest]"

_Paradise_ (first take)

At 0:55, Barney cries, "Ed, more bass sequencer, lad!"

_Paradise_ (second take)

BS: "A sequencer is about too much, it's [?] too much, the sequencer."

Ends with Barney soundchecking guitar riffs

_This___Time___Of___Night_

Taper records a bit of this.

NO: 03 OCT 86 Winter Gardens - Malvern

New Order start with _Love___Vigilantes_ and _Everythings___Gone___Green_.

_Angel___Dust_

BS: "Thank you, we're going to play another song called 'Angel Dust'.

female: "This is the last night [can't make out last word]".

male: "Huh?"

female: "They played all the opposites of last night."

male" "Yeah."

_Blue___Monday_

Someone cries out for Hooky.

PH: "I'm sure this is one you'll all been waiting on."

Hooky has a somewhat different bass solo here.

BS: "Thank you very much."

You can hear ATR call out for "We All Stand" a few times. :) Nice vamping by Hooky before _Every___Little___Counts_ is played.

Track segues right into _Lonesome___Tonight_.

Barney busts out with crazy electic guitar riff.

punter: "Will you fucking stop?" And then somebody blows a whistle.

_Subculture_

(at end)

BS (singing): "I keep thinking about Freddy Mercury..." He sings another line I can't quite out, too. Very strange.

_586_

(at end)

Sequencer fires off after the end by mistake right when Bernard says "thank you", Bernard then says something that I can't make out that could be "Oh fucking whatever" but probably isn't.

BS: "Those who fuck off must be rare...I don't like swearing."

Alex calls for "We All Stand" again...

_Face___Up_ and _Age___Of___Consent_ follow. The latter has an internal cut at about 5 seconds in.

The girl who speaks in the beginning says during Age Of Consent, "I do not pity the drummer on this one." Huh? A bit later she says, "I think that's right in the front."

BS: "Thanks very much, good night!"

Close clapping on the left channel. A Lou Reed tune plays over the PA. There's an edit, and New Order come back on.

_Sister___Ray_

BS: "This is the old Joy Division song, it's called Sister Ray. [folks cheer]

BS: "You get it, right? Cue the drumer please, Gillian(?). By Steve, who's the beat. [Steve starts playing] Beautiful, beautiful."

An unusually wordy version. Anybody wants to try transcribing it?

Hooky dominates the second half of this.

NO: 04 OCT 86 Town & Country Club - London

Have this on a CD sourced from a MP3 dub of this gig. Sound is ok-ish. Also available on a video (amateur handheld), recording in mono, marred by a few glitches/garbling. Since then a version, sourced from LP has turned up, seeded on DIME by a "dropdeadfred", which originates from a different (clearer) source tape than the other version.

_Ceremony_

PH: "Good evening, we'd like to follow it with this little rendering." (puffs)

BS: "Just waiting for our sound engineer to crawl to the desk..."

The Order play Ceremony. Intro is cut on the videotape.

BS: "Thanks a lot."

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle ends in twenty seconds of bass vamping. Nothing much else to say, really....except Hooky's wearing this really cool T-shirt that says "THOR".

_Shellshock_

Has the following variation:

"A victim of the state I'm in" (instead of "evil sin") Some of the background vocals may have been prerecorded, dunno.

_Sunrise_

This one is greeted with cheers. Hooky intro starts slow and then speeds up when the drums come in. There's some woman in this recording that yells during a couple parts of the song. Feedback bridges this song and the next.

On the video you can see flowers sailing towards the stage. At the end, Hooky's bass is literally on the floor.

_As___It___It___When___It___Was_

At this point Gillian grabs a guitar.

Has the following variation:

After the "I've cut my head against the wall" line, Bernard yells, "Slow down". The end features individual punters shouting out the normal sorts of things one would expect.

_This___Time___Of___Night_

Hooky unleashes a corker of a line.

PH: "What are all these flowers? You'd think it's a Smiths gig. It's nice to see someone with a sense of humor. Occasionally. Yorkshire, might have guessed."

During the first stanza, Barney points at something, then pantomimes keyboard playing, and then points down. He does this at least twice. I imagine he wants the keyboards lowered in his monitor mix.

This version has a new stanza:

"For the record, I never knew
Just what me and you would do
into heaven, into hell
I hope I take you there as well"

Song ends in a bass solo.

_Thieves___Like___Us_

Greeted with cheers. This version is short, at about four minutes.

Barney paces around like he's looking for a contact he dropped or something, and comes in late.

"Love is found" stanza is declaimed more than sung.

Variant:

"cuts your life like a broken knife
and it finishes your life like a long-haired wife"

BS: "Thank you very much. Thanks a lot."

Long pause (about 30 seconds) before next track.

_The___Village_

The road crew swap out Barney's guitar *during* the intro.

More changing lyrics. Lots of thim in this gig.

"The rain and the sun and the fucking hours."

Including this inspired (improvised) addition:

"And the earth meets up with the view
They always come and laugh at you
Because you miss them and I like you
When I'm out riding my moterbike"

Also "the rain and the moon and the hours".

BS: "Sorry about the slight technical, erm, difficulty... But did you like the way I looked like I knew what was going on when he threw the guitar at me? And I got the guitar right as well."

(this is cut from the MP3 CD version)

_Broken___Promise_

The first guitar solo starts out a bit offtune. The second guitar solo (on the video) is marred by the tape going pear-shaped just as things start to get interesting...but then it all falls apart, anyway.

_Dreams___Never___End_

PH: "A retired punter. Fuckin' 'ell!"

BS: "Thank you very much indeed. So nice of you."

Hooky plays bass melody through into...

_The___Perfect___Kiss_

Is greeted with a loud burst of clanging.

Barney gestures like he's playing keyboard and then points up this time. But then he starts pointing down again.

Barney says, "Who needs shoes?" a couple of minutes in, after picking out one that had been thrown onstage. Is this also related to the Smiths-fan antics which Hooky alluded to earlier?

Very good solo here by Mr. Sumner, whilst Hooky bangs the shit out of the syndrums. During the break, Barney has more fun than should be allowed with a towel, taking far too long to dry his hair.

Excellent cowbell solo, too. One of the best TPKs ever.

BS: "Thank you very much, good night!"

The gig ends with bass crunch and feedback.

NO: 06 OCT 86 Royal Albert Hall - London

First source (which the original writeup was based on) was Lars Nelleman's NewOrder Anthologies. Sound isn't altogether horrid, but is defintely lacking dynamics. Subsequently obtained a copy of a good audience version as well as a video, which appears somewhat washed out (it's an PAL->NTSC transfer), with the sound on that actually being fairly good (but still in mono)

The MP3 source is missing _Love___Vigilantes_ as the first tune, but The audience and video copy has this. The video is missing the first part of this song, great bit where Bernard and Gillan play side-by-side. Gillian has *huge* hair for this one.

The group blaze through _586_ and _Face___Up_ without comment.

On the video, Bernard plays the keyboard solo for the former while Gillian fetches the tea...er, a drink for herself. She also has a way of running her hands through her hair that is quite comprelling.

The video has an internal edit within 586 as well, right after a 30 second portion that goes all black. During the last part of Face Up, Bernard points skyward, they can never get his levels right, can they? Later on, he points downward.

Then the problems start, and the fun begins.

New Order seem to have a bit of trouble getting through the next number, _Age___Of___Consent_. Bernard sings a line incorrectly, it comes out as "I understood every word a few days ago" instead of the the usual, "I understood every word that it said."

Gillian comes in with a keyboard line at the wrong place, though Bernard's solo somewhat makes up for it. I think they avail themselves a bit better after having watched the video version, the stage looked bloody hot and cramped.

_Every___Little___Counts_

BS: "Thanks very much, we're gonna slow things down a little bit...by a lot."

(he slurs "slow things down" so much it's nearly unrecognizable as that)

Edit in video cuts out all but "by a lot" in Bernard's intro.

lyric: "I saw you all alone, I should have took you home."

Bernard points downward and one of the sound guys comes out and does somethng, hard to tell.

(at the end)

BS: "Let anyone say it's all on tape after that, haha!"

_State___Of___The___Nation_

Even Gillian's gesturing to have her levels turned up.

This version seems to feature a the following verses, that I've not heard before:

Even now I've left my home
I leave my history alone
You don't feel that I know you
But I know the fuck that we are through

Even now, say no more
Here my love will be apart
Heaven knows, we could tell
You could take my name and number as well

_Paradise_

Tempo seems faster than the recorded version, with a different style of vocal delivery. Guitar freak-out at the end, to boot.

_Confusion_

Bernard bursts into spontaneous verse!

BS: "Show a little hope and understanding/ For our audience are so demanding"

(probably as a result of filling the dead air amidst the instrument swapping that typifies a performance of this number)

BS: "This is my mate Jacko(?)...shining."

Hooky tries to get a word in edgewise but ends up tripping over what Mr. Sumner was saying. I think he says, "This is my mate Dave."

BS: "I'm sorry...[mocking stuttering noises]...we're not sure."

BS: "I'm getting into it now, we're getting into it, honest!"

About 1:50 in Bernard tells some yelling punter to "Shutup". Haha. He also says something else at 2:25 I can't make out.

BS: (lyric) "I'll show you these fuckers that I think you should know" Nasty feedback squall at 3:50 in.

_Weirdo_

BS: "Search the audience...I can't see[?]...I see something."

I likely have the wording for the above completely wrong.

PH: "Thanks for the language, twatface."

BS: "Let's see, we got some youngsters in the audience tonight. I'd like to dedicate the next song to Princess Diana. You may not like...you may not like her, but I do. This song is called "Princess Diana".

The audience source has an edit point here and leaves off the first sentence above). It also suffers from dropouts every two seconds throughout Weirdo, which I have corrected on my fixup copy.

Bernard sings "it don't mean fuck all to me". The guitar is again way off.

BS: "It's got a peculiar chord, that song. Bet y'all have never heard a chord like that before."

_Sunrise_

Bernard completely takes off his shirt at this point.

The guy calling out for Sunrise throughout this gig finally gets his request. Be careful what you wish for...strange stuff with the lyrics on this one, as he was completely out of tune and time.

_Temptation_

BS: "Thank you very much. This is Ted, used to go to school with me and Peter, he's always been a bugger."

PH: "Just shows that he's got on in the world, eh?" (not 100% sure of this intrepretation)

(encore, apparently)

Video has an edit between the mean set and encore.

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle_

BS: "We're near the end. We never expected this. Hahaha! What can I say, what can I say?"

Hooky goes topless! Just like his mate.

_The___Perfect___Kiss_

Great guitar and cowbell solo. Records need more cowbell. Song ends with the Stockholm Monsters sample.

NO: 07 OCT 86 The Hacienda - Manchester

Have this on a CD sourced from a MP3 dub of this gig. Sound is ok-ish.

BS: "Thank you, Ed" (I think he's talking to the soundman)

Bass drone.

_Sooner___Than___You___Think_

The volume swells one minute into this song.

The between-song break features shouts and beating drums.

BS: "This is _Bizarre___Love___Triangle_, oh."

Lots of reverb in intro.

At 1:40, Bernard says "turn fl...(?) down."

At 3:02, Sumner "shhh"'s the audience.

There's a drop in the right channel between 3:27 and 3:29.

The Hac punters start chanting and somebody calls out for We All Stand...Hooky tunes his bass or something.

_Subculture_

At 3:27, Bernard implores the crew to "stop fucking(?) with the lights, please."

BS: "Thank you very much. I'd fuck off and I'm not a cocksucker."

_All___Day___Long_

The intro as well as bell melody is different than the release, which is true for all the early performaces of this one.

At 1:05, Barney says "Yo, Alex!" (Alex Stezsko, Alex?)

PH: "Try again. Don't try this."

_Every___Little___Counts_

Slight variation: "Guess I should have known I'd end up o...all alone" (instead of "on my own")

BS: "Possible (what?) anymore". More shouting out for favorites.

BS: "This is _Paradise_".

Bernard sings "There's no end to this (something that sounds like 'sabat'). 5-10s guitar outro. Punter loudly yells "play yer fuckin' stuff!".

_State___Of___The___Nation_

Variations: "All the fucking sites we've seen."

You can hear a guitar being plugged in. Some punter calls out for _Everythings___Gone___Green_...which is actually played next.

PH: "Whoa, whoa(?) old mate. Looking at you makes me feel real fucking old. Really fucking this(?)...but I'm still louder than you."

EGG ends in a feedback squall.

_Weirdo_

Edit in tape after this finishes.

_Sunrise_

Ends with guitar feedbac.

BS: "Thank you very much."

_Love___Will___Tear___Us___Apart_

This is the encore track. Gillian plays a note or two before they start, as you can hear a bottle break.

BS (intro): "Thank you, and... (rest inaudible). Eh, this one's for Tony Mason, his birthday is today. You can guess how old he is. Not as old as...[something]...Barney put together. With it. 1-2-3-4."

NO: 13 OCT 86 The Hacienda - Manchester

Most gigographies for some reason list the date as the 7th of October, but this doesn't appear to be correct, as TJ has this as the 13th of October.

There's an B&W amateur video that filmed a part of this concert. According to GaoBest, the original is in color, which got lost as a part of this particular NTSC->PAL transfer. Too bad, because the camera work is better than the other early October '86 gigs. The handwritten label for the tape I pulled this from also gives the date of the 13th. However, a complete version has subsequently surfaced, and in color, to boot.

This is the last performance before New Order head out on their multi-month US tour, and not a particularly inspired one, according to TJ. I can't help but agree.

_Sooner___Than___You___Think_

Steve gets up off of his drumkit at the end.

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle_

BS: "This is Bizarre Love Triangle."

Bernard mutters something right before the second verse, probably a direction to the soundman. At the end Bernard gestures in a matter to suggest to cut something out, and then takes a drink, as punters chant out "Here we go, here we go!".

_Subculture_

About midway on, Bernard says, "Stop flashing the lights...please."

BS: "Thank you very much."

More chanting.

BS: "I won't fuck off and I'm not a cocksucker." [thanks to Tock for the correction]

_All___Day___Long_ follows.

Hooky says something at the end I can't quite make out, something like "Try this...I'm gonna try this."

A bit of a pause swapping instruments before New Order play _Every___Little___Counts_.

Interesting to see Steve play what amounts to a kettle drum on this song. Must have been strenuous because he takes a swig on his potable afterwards.

Barney says something at the end of this song, something about songs they won't play, and then pulls out a piece of paper which I assume is the setlist.

BS: "Of course I want to hear how great we were.

_Paradise_ and _State___Of___The___Nation follow.

BS: "This is Paradise".

_Everythings___Gone___Green_

Some person manages to guess correctly.

PH: "Hello, old mate. Looking at you makes me fucking old. Really fucking, this. But I'm still louder than you." [first part is nearly inaudible on the video version]

This song has all sorts of reverb on "show"...

_Weirdo_ follows.

_Sunrise_

(at end)

BS: "Thank you very much."

_Temptation_

(at end)

BS: "Thanks a lot."

Hooky finishes it out with his trademark bass.

_Love___Will___Tear___Us___Apart_

Andy Robinson hands Bernard a guitar pic, whilst he fiddles with his amp.

Rob Gretton steps up to the mic!

RG: "Anyway, this one's for Terry Mason, who's birthday it is today.

PH: "Guess how old he is...as old as me and Barney put together. Ready? One-two-three-four."

The band go to walk off the stage but Bernard stops and thanks the audience.

BS: "Thank you..."

The house PA comes back on, playing something akin to Belgian body music.

NO: 31 OCT 86 San Diego State University Open Air Theatre - San Diego, California

Nth gen kindly supplied to EZT by TJ. Also have a M/2 from the Vick collection, as well as a copy from MB's master. Also taped by RM, but his tape is self-described as "nearly unlistenable".

RM: "I've got money now...I'm ready to buy some more music...Oh bitchin' this guy has a TV set...ha ha, I swear to god he has a TV set..."

MB: "Happy Halloween everybody!

RI: "You know little Darren". (talking about his young nephew)

The Kinks's 'You Really Got Me' over the PA before the band take the stage.

Bernard drawls out a "Ha...looo".

_Blue___Monday_

MB: "Get it (BM) out of the way".

The cowbell comes out early for this one.

Either Bernard misses his vocal cue, or the soundman forgots to turn him up in the mix. So some fans fill in the silence.

BS: "Thank you very much."

Hooky plucks his bass, Barney revs up the guitar, it's _Shellshock_.

Barney sneaks in a couple of potty words in the first verse (really the chorus).

lyrics: "I've been good and I've been bad but in all of this world I never I had
I know what I used to be
A failure and some synth for me"

(hello, Gillian, hello?)

and: "That's the day I saw your face
I looked at you, a complete disgrace
You fell down on your knees and returned to me And showed me things I couldn't see"

After this Bernard says, "turn the fucking lights down a bit."

BS: "Thanks a lot."

_Subculture_

After the first verse:

BS: "Turn the fucking lights down, Andy."

I hope the crowd wasn't cheering him saying that. But they probably were.

Later on, you can hear some silly punters squawk like birds "woo woo"...

A fairly long pause between songs.

_Everythings___Gone___Green_

You've never lived until you've heard an American audience make weird bird noises over your early masterpieces.

RM comments: "Actually the crowd was more annoying at Hollywood Palladium if you can imagine that, but they were not "bird noises", they were mocking Barney's whoops and squack sounds."

RM (Silly british accent): "All right".

RM comments: "That's me, mocking the British accents heard on all our bootleg tapes and being just a silly drunk American like the rest of the crowd, but at this point in the show - later before the encore."

Someone else calls for 'Love Vigilantes'.

_Every___Little___Counts_

At about 1:50, Bernard says, "Turn the lights up a bit." and then states, "Down, you cunt!"

Somebody taps the mic between this and the next song, which is _As___It___When___It___Was_.

_Angel___Dust_

(at about a minute)

BS: "Turn the fucking lights off, don't like them!"

lyric: "What you get is what you need, when you watch the blood rush in your fucking..."

_Paradise_

BS: "When I looked into your shifty eyes, I saw you everywhere."

And this lovely couplet:

"I don't know where the spirits go / I don't know why women sew."

The M/2 version has a bit of a garble at 2:25, which neither the master copy nor TJs version have.

Very nice vocal phrasing at the end of this.

_Dreams___Never___End_

BS: "Thank you very much, just getting into it. To sa... as well." [can't make out last sentence]

_Face___Up_

BS: (after first verse) "No one to talk to me."

lyric: "Your hair was long, yours eyes was blue And you were full of goo(?)
That's the way that your life goes
Only because not to quiet down
That's the way that you're nervous
When nobody knows how to give a fuck"

The M/2 version garbles at 4:43 (probably the companion to the one for Paradise on side A). The master copy and TJ's seeded Nth gen are clean.

_Ceremony_

Fans get a bit restive during the bridge, so Bernard shh's them (or he may have done it for another reason, who knows)

BS: "Thank you very much, good night!"

Then you can hear a sound like a starter engine in the background getting faster and faster. RM: "Actually, these are people kicking the SDSU football statum bleacher-type seats to make noise in hopes for an encore."

MB: "Excellent". Tape paused at this point.

House PA music comes back on.

Then three people, the taper and associates start talking. MB is dead center, RI is a bit into the right channel, and RM is more to the left. Much of this was cut out of the copies...but is preserved on the master clone.

RM: "We flipped early, didn't we?" (my M/2 retains this line but cuts hereafter)

RI: "What did they have, an intermission here?"

RM: "We flipped very early." One of the others agree, and you can hear the sound of Randy's recorder being opened.

RM "You signalled to me and I thought that you meant that you already...I thought I saw you flip it on the song...rotten."

MB: "No, never mind."

RM: "How can you possibly never done that?"

MB: "Man, this..."

RM: "Check it out, right by the yellow shirt getting off by here(?)" He knows...he knows what we're doing down here."

MB: "Nixon?"

RM: "Yeah, he's blocking us...our way."

RI: "The boy in the pu...[can't make out] shirt".

RM: "What?"

RI: "Hope he doesn't come after us."

MB: "I...he's cooled out now."

somebody: "This thing..."

RI: "I'll tell you...got, they got some..."

RM: "Stop running...[can't make out?]...what are they going to do, confiscate the tape?"

MB: "Anybody you want to say hi to? I'm letting this run. We got time.

RM: "I'm letting mine run too."

RI: "What?"

MB: "Want to say hi to anybody?"

RI: "Who? What do you mean?"

MB: "Hello to Reed in New Orleans."

RM: "Okay, hi, Reed."

RI: "Hey Reed."

RM: "Uh...all you wonderful trendy poseurs that woule like to have Blue Monday resumed...uh, [can't make out word]."

Girls start screaming.

MB: "So here we sit, on Halloween evening..." At this point some girls start repeating, "Rex...Rex!". MB continues, "with some loud, obnoxious, obnoxious females."

RM: "[chuckles]...obnoxious San Diegans."

MB: "Very pleasant evening."

RM: "Oh, it is. It's nice out."

MB: "About seventy degrees, sixty five degrees. Very pleasant."

RM: "Well, I'm gonna read..."

A few seconds pause, while you can hear the reggae-sytled backing PA.

RM: "Are we not hungry?"

MB: "We are hungry. We have to piss."

RI: "Yes."

RM: "What we sacrifice."

RI: "What we, what we shall wait(?)"

MB: "Hello to David Simpson in Leeds. Hello to John Campbell." [this is retained on my M/2 copy]

RM: "Oh, hi, John. This is an experience for me, John. First time to see New Order. It was excellent, yes."

RI: "This, this is the virgin trip."

MB: "This is the first tape that I will have made myself of New Order." [this is also retained on my M/2 copy]

RM: "Oh, really?"

MB: "I've always just been along before."

(where M/2 starts)

RM: "Schwing..."

MB: "All right, take a break now."

(edit)

When the tape resumes, we can hear T-Rex's "Bang A Gong" on the PA.

RM: "...done it" (tape restart on both versions is too late to capture all that was said)

MB: "Gill...Gillian was wearing an olive-drab cotton dress, she's looked like she's gained some weight. Bernie had some sort of uh, t-shirt on, I couldn't read what it said...

RI: "And shorts, and he looked very California."

MB: "Camoflauge shorts."

RM: "Oh yes, Bernie's shorts. Bernie's shorts were like as baggy as mine. Did you notice how many times he pulled them up?

MB: "Yeah."

RM: "I like the...did you like the way he was dancing around in the beginning? I thought it was pretty funny. His big old pelvic thrusts."

RI: "That's all right. [chuckles]"

RM: "Bernie had his hair tied back, slicked down to his head and tied into a ponytail in the back." [RM: "My first time seeing them, and a bit drunk too."]

RI: "You mean Hooky."

RM: "Hooky.

RI: "And uh..."

??: "We'll call him..." (this wasn't said by any of the three)

RI: "Steve...Steven..."

RM: "Steven we could hardly see."

RI: "Had a...had a white shirt on. Nice white shirt with some red print on it, if anybody cares." (RM says "yeah" during this)

RM: "Next time I...I'll see if I can bring a better pair of binoculars."

RI: "And the security man is looking at us again, and now he's walking away."

RM: "Bye, security man."

RI: "Although at three of us and one of them..."

RM: (talking to some girls around him) "Do you want to say hi?" (rest of what he says tails off I can only make out, "...audiences been like...". You can hear them say "Yeah".

Another tape edit.

MB: "Any prediction as to..."

RM: "o/~ Get it on..." (mimicking PA track)

MB: "Fuck this set, man." [expressing annoyance at the long break with annoying T-Rex background music, not appropriate in RM's view for a 1986 New Order concert]. Randy, any prediction as to what Joy Division song they'll be doing?"

RI: "I will probably say it's Love Will Tear Us Apart."

RM: (starting in during RI's answer) "I think it's gonna be...I think it's gonna be ..."

RI: "Atmosphere" (interjecting into RM's answer)

RM: "...Leaders Of Men."

MB: "Leaders of Men."

RM: "Yeah...yeah..."

RI: (interrupting) "Gutz, gutz!"

RM: "No, I will..will...I'll tell you what. If it's...if this is Decades, I [think I'll]? get very fucked up tonight."

RM comments: "I had a copy of the '84 Royal Festival Hall Decades and I still think it's one of the best covers the band has ever done of JD".

RI: "Peel session!"

RM: "If this is Decades..."

RM: (shouting) "TURN THE HEATER ON!"

RM comments: "Trying to sound British for the tape as a joke since we were clearly not anywhere near England!"

MB: "WARSAW!"
RI: (simultaneously) "ICE AGE!"

RM: "WARSAW!"

RM comments: "We weren't seriously expecting any of these encores, but we were drunk enough to humor the idea of shouting them out. In fact, you can almost hear the holding back of laughter in Mark's shout for Warsaw."

RM: (replying to girl making an inaudible comment): "I can get that out".

Hooky strums his bass at this point.

RI: "So they just stopped them..." RM doesn't think that's what he said, but so far I haven't be able to make anything better out.

RM: "Here's the Peel out(?)..." Likewise here.

PH: "Well, I know we'll have to go with something to [can't make out] with that wonderful setlist."

MB: "Oi?" Again, RM isn't sure what Hooky said.

RI: "Aww..."

This was his reaction to the starting drum pattern of in his view the overplayed _The___Perfect___Kiss_, rather than getting to hear a PCL song.

MB: "I'd say he was really knackered."

RI: "I'll say..." RM is unsure about whether that's what each of them said.

RI: (reacting to female screaming) "Dippy...dippy."

A bit more hard-to-make-out banter here.

Folks clap around through this.

BS: "Thank you."

The Order end the set with _Temptation_.

RM's summary:

"We were bummed that there was no ``special encore'', but it was still a fun night. Mostly I was exited about being around the drunk college kids from SDSU--some in costume. I felt like a kid in a candy store surrounded by sexy and older ``college girls'' who were too drunk to care if I was 17 or 21 (not that I hooked up with any), while I was still in High School. Dreams Never End and Ceremony were clearly the highlights of the evening for us all. I was happy to have smuggled in a deck and made one of many bootlegs to come. Also, I had a brief conversation with Hooky while he was standing in the crowd by the mixing desk before there set. I mostly praised his bass style, and he politely thanked me. I felt sort of fickle and 'star-struck' still being a new fan, so I ended the conversation quickly and awkwardly as I was getting kind of drunk and was struggling for things to say - nothing ventured nothing gained though that, only that I learned first-hand that Hooky is just a very nice and genuine person to talk with off stage.

NO: 01 NOV 86 Irvine Meadows, Irvine CA

Sourced from the RM recording.

The intro (Funeral For A Viking) is from the RM recording...

BS: "Well, we're New Order. I think."

That comment creates some amusement. The taper cries for 'Turn The Heater On'.

_State___Of___The___Nation_ starts out the set.

Ends with Hooky two-note riff.

BS: "Thank you very much."

_Shellshock_ follows.

_Love___Vigilantes_

BS: (at end) "So...something else."

lyrics: "When I looked into your brain / I find that I going...insane."

There's a couple of other variations. This is all pre-autocue!

Hooky fills in the time with a bit of bass.

_This___Time___Of___Night_

BS: "Thank you very much. The next song is a very sensitive song. No it's not." (he was probably referring to 'All Day Long' but got this loaded up instead)

_All___Day___Long_

lyrics: "So don't tell me about suicide / or all the problems about sex this time"

BS: (at end) "Andy, it's getting a bit warm up here. Thank you very much. Go!"

_Sooner___Than___You___Think_ follows.

_Subculture_

Tape speed issues at about 3:15, may have gotten bumped.

Edit at this point.

_Weirdo_

BS: "Funny groove, now, what a funny groove, yeah. What a bunch of characters."

_Sunrise_ follows.

Lots of cheering after.

_Age___Of___Consent_

Bernard's guitar intro is off-key.

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle_

BS: "Fuckin' hell Steve, where did you get the speed from?"

Brief cut at 2:31.

BS: "Thank you very much."

taper: "This is almost a totally a different set tonight..."

mate: "Exactly."

The PA music is a reprise of 'Funeral For A Viking', followed by a weird song that the taper pauses a couple of times through.

_Confusion_

Some soundchecking at the start.

_The___Perfect___Kiss_

BS: "Andy...I...[something]...this light."

(at end)

BS: "Thank you very much, good night."

Ends in feedback. A bit of PA music at the end.

NO: 04 NOV 86 The Palace - Hollywood

Written up from the FM version of the gig. There's also an excellent-sounding audience version.

The audience version features a bluesy-type song that I can't identify. A female individual asks if the person she's talking to likes "Every Second Counts".

_Shellshock_

PH: "Whoa".

At 0:50 Barney says, "It's hot, Andy, it's hot."

lyric: "State I'm in" instead of "evil sin".

2:40 Bernard reverses the "I've been good and I've been bad" line and giggles at his gaffe.

BS: "Thank you very much. Andy, it's miles too hot."

_Everythings___Gone___Green_

Bernard says something off mic at the start that's difficult to make out. Vocals turned up a bit late.

_Ceremony_

Intro has Bernard unplugging his guitar out at the start.

(at end)

BS: "Thank you very much."

Hooky plucks bass before start of _Every___Little___Counts_

About 30 seconds in, Hooky puts down a punter in his place.

PH: "Shut up, big mouth!"

lyric: "Even though you're stupid, my life depends on you."

_Leave___Me___Alone_ follows.

_Thieves___Like___Us_

BS: "I wish we, er, I wish we could get excited as you Americans do. I always wanted to be American. You get so excited. It's wonderful."

On the audience version, the same girl that made the comment in the beginning of the gig comments, "That's the attitude I hate about him".

lyric: "It cuts my life like a broken knife, when at the end of the night, you find your wife."

BS: "Thank you very much."

_Way___Of___Life_

BS: "Okay, motherfuckers. This is called 'Way Of Life' and it's off our new LP called 'Brotherhood' available on Warner Brothers/ Qwest records."

Interesting guitar line during first verse (and throughout) that's not on the recorded version.

_Face___Up_

Hooky plays a wiggly bit before the start of this song.

lyric: "Don't let anybody tell you that you are gay, because it's not that way."

lyric: "Your eyes were blue, your hair was long, guess what I'm gonna do with my dong!"

New Order than perform _Temptation_.

_Confusion_

At 1:07, it sounds like Barney calls out, "Jose!".

At the end, The taper (or his associate) comments, "Keep an eye on the security to my right...in case they make a move on me."

_Blue___Monday_

And there it is. "Here comes the clap". Cowbell very early at 0:44.

lyric: "But if it wasn't for your big...cock...I'd be a heavenly person today." To prove this isn't rehearsed, you can clearly hear Hooky start to sing "misfortune".

Hooky at 5:00 or so says something like "All right, Brad."

The ending is faded out on the FM version but is complete on the audience version.

The audience version has the post-gig venue music, starting with Kraftwerk's "Musik Non-Stop". People were expecting the group to come back on, but they never did, it seems.

The same female individual as above makes the following comment:

"They're being assholes, that's how they are, that's how they'll always be, that's how they were last year...[guy she's talking to goes "What?"] their attitude."

But she came back, you see.

NO: 05 NOV 86 The Palladium - Hollywood

CD clone of M/2 cassette kindly provided by TMK.

Something like rockabilly can be heard over the PA before the NO intro music (Funeral For A Viking)

The group come out to the funeral tones of _Elegia_.

BS: "Thank you very much."

Then Bernard plays about 20 seconds of a riff...not quite the 'Are You Experienced' one, but something along those lines.

_Paradise_

lyric: "When I looked into your desperate eyes..."

Hooky ends the song with a distinctive riff.

_Subculture_

Quite a few people can be heard singing along, as Bernard's vocals start out low in the mix.

_Sunrise_ and _Your___Silent___Face_ follow.

PH: "...if I listen again, I wanna..." (can't make out)

_Sooner___Than___You___Think_

(at end)

PH: "Having fun, Ozzie."

_Broken___Promise_ follows.

A/B split at this point.

_586_

lyric: "From these fucking feelings I can't hide."

_Age___Of___Consent_

Bernard says "closer" after the first verse.

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle wraps up the set.

People repeatedly call out for Blume
Funeral For A Viking is aired again between main set and encore. There's a couple of edits, and then as the next tune starts, NO take the stage again.

_The___Perfect___Kiss_

BS: "We're going to start straight and end up reeling."

BS: (to soundman?) "...you say, he's not getting anything..."

Then Bernard and Peter get into a bit of a direction battle.

BS: "Turn the fucking lights down, Andy."

PH: "Turn the fucking PA down, Andy."

BS: "Turn the fucking foldback up, Ed."

PH: "Turn that up bloody..." (can't make out)

Excellent version.

_Sister___Ray_

Bernard's improvision is actually fairly decent, compared to some others I've heard. The song featurs the immortal chorus of "I'd like to fuck you."

lyric: "Sister Ray said I saw you the other day, she said I saw your face, made me feel so sick. When I looked in your pants, I saw your dick. So big, it made me sick." And it gets even lewder, if you can believe it...it's a must-listen for those admirers of Bernard's legendary potty mouth.

A later bit has "this is the end, my girlfriend".

Song speeds up near the end, and ends in howls of feedback.

NO: 07 NOV 86 Arlington Theatre - Santa Barbara, California

Source courtesy of RM and MB, who taped it.

Master tape has PA backing music from a few artists, first sounds like Karen Finley(!), mixed into Kraftwerk's "Telephone Call", third is unknown, some reggae track, fourth (as NO come on) is the Kinks' "Lola".

MB: "The sound is a bit better back a little bit, anyways."

Somebody then says "Ready" in a raggamuffin voice.

BS: "Hi, we're New Order, this is _State___Of___The___Nation_"

(at end)

BS: "Thank you very much."

_Love___Vigilantes_

A bit of a rocky start. Hooky's bass cuts during the intro, and Bernard appears to forget some of his vocals, humming in their place. Or this may be intentional.

lyric: "Well, I never knew you've never come when I was at the spark above" (or something like that)

BS: "Cheers."

_The___Village_

This is where you hear the exotic creature known as the "LA Bird" ask "what did he say?"

PH: "What a pair of little bastards anyway."

_Dreams___Never___End_

Hooky's bass sounds especially chorusy here. This also features the "quiet" refrain as outro, which melds into _Paradise_.

A bit of a pause between tracks, you can hear an LA bird call out, "Mark, Mark".

_This___Time___Of___Night_ is followed by _Shellshock_, with a little bit of Dubvulture thrown in at the end.

BS: "Right, that echo sounds a bit dodgy on the vocals, Oz. What are we gettin'? We're going to sound a bit dodgy."

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle_

lyric: "Everyday my behind gets [something]"

BS: (after the first verse) "Turn the fucking lights off!"

Break in tape here. (A/B split)

_Weirdo_

BS: "It's called Weirdo."

_Ceremony_ follows.

Somebody afterwards can be heard to say, "What can't them fuckers do something?"

_Blue___Monday_

At the 4:13 a very agitated voice (with an English accent) says something about "I can't...what you're doing in here."

Ends on a long synth note. You can hear more swearing amongst punters right at the end of said note.

Soundcheck

Last known circulated audience-recorded soundcheck of the classical era.

Starts off with Hooky saying that "this wasn't the sort of place they were used to" and running through some basslines, like Sister Ray and Senses.

He's particularly talkative, making comments and "one-two"ing into the mic.

Then there's some guitar riffing, of which I can make out _Lets___Go_. This continues on for a few minutes, followed by _As___It___Is___When___It___Was_.

Then they soundcheck _The___Village_, with Bernard calling for "more bass sequencer, Ed. One two." stopping proceedings and than playing another take to adjust monitor sound levels, and then a full rendition, after which Bernard makes some comments regarding the sound quality.

Then follows some raucous guitar, what is presumably the riff to TV Eye by The Stooges.

The synth of _This___Time___Of___Night_ kicks in. Notice that all the sequenced songs are being run through in order. The take is aborted while keyboards, guitar, and bass levels are adjusted.

Another TTON (with full instrumentation and vocal) take begins.

This is followed by _Way___Of___Life_ (brief vocal take), followed by Hooky talking about the PA and how it relates to his hearing. Bernard also makes come comments about the sound, and at this point the tape runs out.

NO: 08 NOV 86 Berkeley Community Theatre - Berkeley CA

From previously-uncirculated Sony TCS-310 recording kindly given
to me by Erik. Very good quality, except it seems to have been recorded with Dolby C applied.

Most of the lyrical "variations" are of the four-letter kind.

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle_

Stereo shift at 1:50 or so as the taper moves around.

_Your___Silent___Face_

Bernard sings "go fuck yourself" at the point he usually sings "why don't you piss off", and then says, "Thank you very much, thank you very very much."

(at end)

BS: "Thanks a lot!"

A tiny bit of tuning here.

_Leave___Me___Alone_

(at end)

BS: "Very well, thank you."

_Angel___Dust_

Think that Hooky says "Yo!" (off-mic) at the start here.

lyrics: "What you get is what you fucking need when you watch the blood run in your fucking head."

During the bridge (at about 1:57 into the song) Bernard remarks, "Intense".

BS: "Thank you very much."

_Every___Little___Counts_

A bit of a grunt, clearing his throat, at the start.

lyric: "I think you are a pig, you need a good fucking screw." and "Every second counts when I'm fucking you."

During the bridge (about 0:43) Bernard says something like "Oh, shit."

BS: "Thank you."

girl voice: "New Order's ok?"

guy: "Yeah, they're ok, it's just that they're playing too loud."

(a few seconds later), another girl voice: "hah"

guy says somthing I can't totally make out, something like "That one's of UK".

another girl voice: "A little bit."

Feedback squall with guitar twiddling. Then Hooky says (off-mic) something like "try it again".

_All___Day___Long_

Lots of echo on Bernard's vocals here. Sumner ends it with a bit of a guitar flourish.

_Everythings___Gone___Green_ follows.

A bit of the usual when Barney and Hooky swap instruments before starting in on _Confusion_.

lyric: "You just won't believe me baby, when I show you what the fuck you cannot see."

At about 3:47 Bernard yells, "Turn the lights down."

BS: "Why, thank you so much." The crowd cheers.

_The___Perfect___Kiss_ cuts at 9:10 or so (like side A of the master tape running out)

_Face___Up_

Bernard mutters something about "..esh another one" at the 3:00 mark.

_Temptation_ follows.

Folks clap and cheer as NO leave the stage.

girl voice: "How's an eleven (song) set....they're gonna do....the hang of it?"

Edits at 0:40 and 1:12 of audience chatter.

New Order come back on.

PH: "It's like we, uh, played in Santa Barbara last night. Didn't you hear about(?) Santa Barbara, right? Very nice place, we didn't do an encore there. Those people sucked." Pretty much establishes that this is the real deal, and not a fabrication.

Hooky slow-starts a rip-roaring fantastic version of _Age___Of___Consent_ as the first encore track.

Ends in bass feedback which preludes _Blue___Monday_. There's a bit of a glitch and somewhat lower levels for this song as opposed to the rest of the tracks.

BS: "Thank you very much, good night." More bass feedback to leave us with.

Starts out with _Lets___Go_

_Sooner___Than___You___Think_

Some tape wear on 3:09.

BS: "Thank you very much." Tape recording is paused, making a squeal.

_Paradise_ and _Temptation_ follow.

BS: "Thank you [Bob?] could it possibly be the 'syningers' there. So all the 'syningers'(?) are really wrong. (really hard to make out what he's saying)

_All___Day___Long_

A bit of a pause between this and _Thieves___Like___Us_.

BS: "Thank you so much."

_The___Perfect___Kiss_

BS: "Right...all that fucking."

At about 6:00, Bernard says "Merci Beucoup...you're playing, Andy", or something like that. The taper comments it sounds like crickets.

Tape edit between TPK and _Angel___Dust_.

At the end of _Everythings___Gone___Green_ Bernard states "thank you very much." and then introduces _Age___Of___Consent_ with "I don't like...." [can't make out]

During the verse, he says "Oh fuck"...not sure why.

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle_

BS: "Thank you very much, this is the last song we're playing tonight."

lyric: "Every day my big penis grows."

The last chorus in particular features a particularly bad case of forgetting lyrics..."Up flows good where have you"...

Encore tracks:

_Shellshock_

Issues with mic connection up to when the vocals start, with a few left channel dropouts through the first verse, and intermittently thereafter.

Hooky comments about a millisecond delay to Oz.

_Ceremony_

BS: (at end) Thank you, that was a new one, this one, the next one, is the next one, and it's an old one, it's called _Ceremony_. This also is about fucking. In fact, all the songs are about fucking. Fucking nothing!

The channel issues continue.

BS: "Thanks very much, good night!"

NO: 15 NOV 86 Bronco Bowl - Dallas

From Lisa Brooke:

I saw New Order on November 15, 1986 at the Bronco Bowl in Dallas. Don't remember the setlist, but I do remember that the opening act was Love Tractor from Athens, Georgia....I've attached the ticket stub.

Ticket stub is here: http://www.new-order.net/no/pix/tickets/neworderticket_861115.jpg

There's an MDMArchive thread here as well:

NO: 17 NOV 86 City Coliseum, Austin, TX

Newly surfaced (as of June 2007) recording from this show.

Opens with 'Funeral For A Viking'.

A bit of feedback.

The group open with _Shellshock_.

BS: "Thank you very much."

_Subculture_ follows.

_Way___Of___Life_

BS: "This is an instrumental song."

Obviously, he misread the setlist and thought the band was performing the subsequent song, "Let's Go"...or the rest of the group swapped tunes on their singer.

Hooky calls out "Ready, Steve?"

_Lets___Go_

BS: "We're gonna play a slow quiet song now called "We All Stand"

Amusingly enough, Bernard is still one song ahead on his introductions.

PH: (count-in) "one two three four"

Brief cut between songs.

_We___All___Stand_

BS: "...doing the same number(?). Cool the lights, Andy."

The words to the final line of the chorus get varied a bit, perhaps uniquely to this version.

BS: "Thank you very much."

_Leave___Me___Alone_ follows.

BS: (at about 1:57) "Cool the lights, Andy...please."

lyric: "I drove in my stolen car / When it broke down / I fuck the ground / Because I don't fuck when you're around."

BS: "Thank you very very much."

A/B cut, first part of _586_ wasn't taped as a result.

Sadly, the old version also has the start of that song missing, but not as much as the newly-surfaced one.

BS: "Thank you very much, very much indeed."

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle_ follows.

Ends in Hooky 'My Girl' bit.

_Face___Up_ is next.

_Age___Of___Consent_ is met with an "All right!" by someone close to the taper.

BS: (at end) "Thank you, good night!"

Some interstital music between main set and encore, reprised with Funeral For A Viking. The band shortly make it back on again.

_Paradise_

BS: "This is, er, Paradise."

_The___Perfect___Kiss_

BS: "Thank you...motherfuckers. Has anyone in here seen a film called Scarface. Don't you think it was funny? Because I did, I thought it was funny...Just watching it [?] now...just thought I'd tell you. You motherfuckers!"

Ends in massively loud feedback. Wonderful!

NO: 20 NOV 86 Oriental Theatre - Milwaukee, WI

Tape courtesy of Dimitroy. Quality is fairly decent on the one circulating source, which I got in 2019.

Starts with something that's not the 'Funeral For a Viking' intro tape, but a disco-type tune with the lyrics "Stand Up".

_Ceremony_ opens the set. Volume adjustment about a minute in.

_Paradise_

BS: "'Bernard isn't fuckin' talking isn't he?'...over there." (the last part is likely stage direction)

You can heard people struggling to make out his Mancunian accent. with punters coming up with the standard "What did he say?".

Somebody also explains they're playing this from tape. Maybe they were!

BS: (at end) "Thanks very much indeed."

_Angel___Dust_

BS: (at end) "Thank you very much."

_Way___Of___Life_ follows.

_Every__Little___Counts_

BS: "Thank you very much, we're going to play a ballad song now... (inaudible)...well, I've fucked it...like fucking everything..."

Lyrical variations:

"I think you are a pig / I'd love to fuck you" "Every little counts / when I like to play to you"

_This___Time___Of___Night_

BS: "Somewhere, yeah...Halloween(?) is about us being able to compete with my mom we won't stop being dicks....ooh! I have, anyway. Peter's gonna... I can't speak for everything."

(a fairly incomprehensible comment, so if anybody can better pin this down... updates@new-order.net!)

Interestingly, this has an additional verse, though I suspect it was all ad-libbed, as one of the verses mentions "Your Silent Face".

BS: "Thank you very much."

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle_

BS: "Thank you very much. A dance one." (and at the end, a "thank you".

_Everythings___Gone___Green_

Great version, and continuing New Order's long tradition of absolutely brilliant gigs performed in the strangest locales.

Segues into _Age___Of___Consent_, followed by _Sunrise_.

lyric: "Your name might be God but you won't say that much to me - Fuck You!"

BS: "Thank you."

_Temptation_ concludes the main set. House music starts to play as the crowd shout out for more...preserved on tape for a good 4-5 minutes.

_Lonesome___Tonight_ is the first encore track, followed up by _Confusion_.

NO: 21 NOV 86 Aragon Ballroom - Chicago, IL

Tape courtesy of GaoBest. Quality isn't that great, considering the acoustics at this particular venue are famously bad.

Starts with 'Funeral For a Viking' intro tape.

_Shellshock_

BS: "Shellshock."

BS: "Thank you very much."

_State___Of___The___Nation_

BS: "Thanks a lot."

_Way___Of___Life_

BS: "Thank you very much."

_Weirdo_

BS: "This is Weirdo. It's off of Brotherhood..." [can't make out the rest of what he says here]

BS: "Play faster, everything fast. Pretty fast."

_Dreams___Never___End_ follows.

_Your___Silent___Face is next.

_All___Day___Long_

BS: "Thank you very much, this is a very serious song."

The band lose the plot about halfway in, they are completely out of sync.

BS: "Thank you [can't make out rest, except for something about 'the time']"

_Love___Vigilantes_ is next.

BS: "Oh, thank you so much."

A bit of gap between songs.

_Subculture_

Some strange whooping by audience members during the middle of this.

BS: "Thank you very much indeed. Very nice of you...too bad."

Break in tape at this point, and a fade up to _Age___Of___Consent_.

_The___Perfect___Kiss_

BS: "Perfect Kiss."

There's likely a gap between this in the last two tracks.

_586_ follows.

BS: "Thank you very much."

_Blue___Monday_

NO: 22 NOV 86 Fox Theatre - Detroit MI

Tape courtesy of DM93. Recording is a bit distant.

_Ceremony_ starts out the set.

_The___Village_ follows.

_Angel___Dust_ immediately follows, the band not having spoken a word to the audience.

A couple of Strat power chords between songs.

_Paradise_

BS: "Thank you very much."

_Thieves___Like___Us_

BS: "Thank you."

_As___It___Is___When___It___Was_

lyric: "Listen hard and I will make you fucking see."

A bit of guitar that sounds like the Velvet's 'Jane Says'.

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle_ and _Confusion_ follow.

_Sunrise_

Cut after this song.

_Face___Up_

Beginning portion is missing.

_Temptation_

BS: "Thank you very much. Don't back(?) it any further..."

Hooky bass riffing at end, with feedback.

Reggae tune in between main set and encore tracks.

_Shellshock_

BS: "Thank you, fl...(?)"

Some guitar stummings.

BS: "...drum machines, Andy...start the drum machines, Andy, please."

Right before the chorus...

BS: "A victim of the state I'm in....Hooky!"

_In___A____Lonely___Place_

To wrap up the proceedings.

Gillian sounds like she's randomly hitting keys near the end, very odd.

NO: 24 NOV 86 Congress Centre - Ottawa, Ontario

The first and last time New Order play in Ottawa.

Hooky introduces things.

BS: "Hello, we're New Order.

PH: "And we're fucked. I mean, we're *fucked*."

_Lets___Go_

BS: "Thank you very much. It's a new song... [rest of sentence is unintelligible]

After they play _Love___Vigilantes_, BS says "Thanks very much".

_State___Of___The___Nation_ follows.

_Sooner___Than___You____Think_

PH: "It's all right, I'll kill you. Forget the fucking setlist. At the end, [something I can't make out], is it? You...fucking... just a load of cunts..."

(and end)

PH: "Doesn't suit you. Little [a few more unintelligible words]...

Somebody yells for Shellshock (which New Order hate and rarely play live)

They play _Thieves___Like___Us_ instead, which the track listing on my tape inexplictly leaves off. Barney gets creative with the ordering of the lyrics. Then a stormin' version of _Way___Of___Life_, interrupted by some woman berating what I assume is the bootlegger:

woman: "They didn't find that on you? Did they not check your pockets for that?"

After _Angel___Dust_, BS thanks the audience very much.

Hooky mumbles "You know" or "Thank you" or something...

Barney unleases his world-renowned pottymouth one one of the verses to _Weirdo_:

"Someone like you cannot be free
Just like a lock without a fucking key
Just like a fucking cunt without a fucking sea Just like a lock withat a key
Someone like you cannot be fucking free Fucking fuck without a fucking tree"

BS: "Thank you very much...sorry about the swearing...even though [can't make out the rest]"

Some piece of equipment screeches during the first verse of _Subculture_. The audience can be heard singing along to the chorus. On my tape, Subculture cuts out midway on side A and started over on side B, which is more hissy than the first side, as it's taken from a different audience tape with this complete! Barney plays a guitar riff I've not heard before to finish off.

The guitar riffage also opens up Blue Monday. The recorder pauses for a bit between BM and the previous song.

lyric: "But if it wasn't for your big willie/ I'd be a heavenly person today"

Barney compeletely forgets the lyrics, or is creatively improvising... (probably the latter actually)

He sings about a "walk in the park"...

After they finish up Barney thanks the audience and says good night. Whoever is recording this is trying to save up on tape, as the tape starts and stops a few times.

female punter: "This must seem kind of calm to you then.

Hooky says something, all I can make out is "I had a fucking move solo...". Nobody understands what he said, but they cheer anyway. A female fan expresses her appreciation of NO playing BLT in their encore... "Right On!"...

This performance features some of the worst singing Barney has ever committed to tape, he's pretty much laughing through the second verse... :)

BS: "Thank you very much...this evening, we're gonna play you our version of _Sister___Ray_ by the Velvet Underground.

Some verses (this version is more wordy than most):

"She fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck..."

"I saw you...walking in the rain"

People clap along to Hooky's bass riff....which changes to that of _Shes___Lost___Control_. Nice touch.

NO: 26 NOV 86 Massey Hall - Toronto, CA

Source is from digital clone of second-gen tape supplied from TMK. It's a good quality tape, but somewhat hissy and with not a lot of stereo seperation, suggesting a built-in mic was used.

Fade up from backing tape.

BS: "Hello, everyone."

PH: "Whoa! Eddie, driver."

Somebody near the taper states, "There's a lot ...ing(?) the..." (can't make this out clearly)

BS: "We're pissed."

_Elegia_ starts.

Hooky makes a dedication.

PH: "This one's for, uh, Tracy Q, whose an old tr(?) friend of ours." "As in 442(?)"

At the same time, the taper and a friend are talking, which it makes very difficult to make out exactly what it is that Hooky's saying.

I wonder if they're talking about getting permission for taping the show, at this point it's anyone's guess.

friend: "Did he approve?

taper: "What?"

friend: "He approve?"

taper: "Yeah."

PH: "This is where all of your f...(?) mate(?)...

Some more chatter about a minute in...

person: "Can you see?"

girl: "What?"

person: "Can you see?"

girl: "From here, no."

BS: "Thank you very much."

_Subculture_

BS: "Now this one's for this lot's who is still alive."

(I presume the band knew fully well how their previous effort would play across)

Hooky twaddles with his bass at the end of this.

_Paradise_

lyrics: "If my cocks fell down, I could live in you fore[slur]"

and, in a glorious use of an infix, we have:

"When I looked into your lifeless eyes, I saw you every fucking where!"

BS: "Thank you."

BS: "This is a song about nothing, it's called _Weirdo_."

You can hear "a lock without a big fat key" and possibly other more colorful variations in line with Bernard's potty mouth.

Afterwards, some punter says "See?" as if the band's playing proved his point.

_Your___Silent___Face_

BS: "Thank you."

_All___Day___Long_

BS: "This is a really sad song...sorry, this is a real sad song called All Day Long."

BS: (at end) "Thank you."

_Shellshock_

This gets quite a big reaction at the end.

_Age___Of___Consent_ segues into _Face___Up_, which cuts near the end, alas.

_The___Perfect___Kiss_

BS: "Thank you very much. We've moved into the disco part of our set so anyone care to dance, you can do. But if you don't want to, fuck you."

Right before Hooky's bass intro, Bernard says, "Now, I think about dancing..." (or is it "that, eh?", hard to tell)

BS: "Thank you very much."

_Sunrise_ concludes the main set. There's a cut and a fast fade-in...I assume somebody edited out the pre-encore banter.

_In___A___Lonely___Place_

Female punter asks, "what's it called?" which is answered correctly by another female fan.

BS: "Well, all right. Fookin' hell, I have to think of something now, don't we?"

At 2:37, Barney says, "Turn the cymbals up a bit, Ed.", and then makes cymbal noises when he doesn't immediately comply.

There's interesting synth flourishes in this I haven't heard elsewhere. Either Gillian's doing a mean improv or Barney wanted to try something different.

Segue here, too. This is one of the only gigs to have two seperate segues.

_Temptation_

Really cool guitar licks at the start.

He just about speaks some of the lines here, and makes up a bit of a unique couplet for this song:

"Bolts from above hit the people down below This guitar...is way too slow
Cuz I think that I will hurt your eye
Will not be blind, if you're happy on guitar."

And he says "shut up!" during another one of the "Bolts from above..." lines.

BS: "Thanks very much, good night!"

Hooky ends it for good with a bit of bass feedback, and then there's real feedback too, as the tape slowly fades out.

NO: 30 NOV 86 McMaster University (Ivor Wynne Center) - Hamilton ON

Source provided by TJ, stemming from CH who got it from an unknown Canadian taper.

Starts with 'Funeral For A Viking' intro.

Funny exchange between some fans audible on this version.

punter #1: "And now, New Order...and now, New Order!"

punter #2: "What?"

punter #3: "And NOW, New Order..."

_Love___Vigilantes_

BS: "I can see a few human beings. So you all got to guess what that means. This is Love Vigilantes."

female fan: "[can't make out]"

punter: "It's really heavy on voice."

female fan: "I know."

BS: "Thank you very much."

_Way___Of___Life_ follows.

Brief rise in volume at about 3:50.

_Angel___Dust_

Some audience chatter at the start, with the female fan making a comment I can't entirely make out about the guitarist, with more comments mentioning the band's name though the first verse.

BS: "[two words], please move back."

_Everythings___Gone___Green_ and Your___Silent___Face_ follow.

Female punter says "six degrees" at 2:30

lyric: "No hearing, no breathing, no students, no slouchers, nothing."

Crashing guitar at the end.

_Sooner___Than___You___Think_

BS: "Hello everyone, it's so nice to be here." Then he mentions something about Gillian's timing with respect to her bit in the song and jamming, a bit hard to make out here.

lyric: "Hello everyone, it's awful to be here. We've come so far to see your balls. I can see your bright red eyes. They sleep beneath my penis and thighs..."

Oh-kay...

Brief cut here.

_Subculture_

BS: "Yeah?"

Bernard makes a comment about the bass at 1:35, and chuckles though the first line of the next verse.

A bunch of fans shout strangely together.

_Bizarre____Love___Triangle_

Bernard strangly syncopates the "my confusion grows" line. Tape cuts out into blank noise for a few seconds at 2:00.

BS: "Thank you very much, thank you so much."

_Sunrise_ is next.

lyric: "Pay the price for the use of love, fuck you."

Another edit in tape.

People yell for a speech whilst Hooky is talking before the start of _Temptation_.

PH: "Now no...[can't make out] on this side, fucking hell." And another sentence from him difficult to parse.

_The___Perfect___Kiss_ closes out the main set.

punter: "Guess it's part of the show."

Bernard says something at 2:58, right before the second verse.

A bit of profanity with Bernard saying "fucking throw away"...

Another break in tape. The audience tape, alas, doesn't include the reprise of the Viking Theme or _Lonesome___Tonight_. Lucikly, MDMArchive uncovered that in fact they played this song, see http://www.mdmarchive.co.uk/archive/showartefact.php?aid=1375

_Love___Will___Tear___Us___Apart_ concludes the proceedings.

Ends in a long bit of feedback, and the same descending riff heard at the end of TPK.

NO: 02 DEC 86 Syria Mosque - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Speaker mix somewhat muddy, but gets better. 2nd gen audience tape. Very good performance.

After _Love___Vigilantes_

BS: "Thank you very much."

_Angel___Dust_

lyric: "What you get is what you need, when you watch the blood but you don't FUCKING bleed."

_Broken___Promise_

PH: "It's really good, that intensive care. Sordid now but true, playing like grease fucking lightning."

PH: "Ooh...one, two, three, four"

_Dreams___Never___End_ follows.

BS: "Thanks a lot."

_All___Day___Long_

First couple of lines are low in the mix.

_This___Time___Of___Night_

BS: "Thank you, thank you, thanks a lot."

_State___Of___The___Nation_

lyric: "I think about where we have been/ All the FUCKING sites we have seen"

Before _Confusion_, there's a bit of guitar rhythm that sounds like Hendrix' "Are You Experenced?".

_Everythings___Gone___Green_ follows.

A/B split.

_Temptation_

Taper moves around a bit, the recording starts out as being unbalanced towards the right channel but straightens out after a few seconds.

The "last fucking time" lyrics makes an appearance. The stereo field shifts a bit between sides.

_Sunrise_ is the last song in the main set.

Encore

_Shellshock_

PH: "It's a bit funny."

BS: "It's a bit funny you said that. I was gonna say something funny but you said it. This is Shellshock."

Slight dropout during second verse.

lyric: "A victim of/the state I'm in" (instead of 'a victim of/evil sin')

"Common sense I've always had" (instead of 'never')

_The___Perfect___Kiss_ closes things out.

NO: 04 DEC 86 Irvine Auditorium - University of Pennsylvania

I haven't verified the cassette listing for this gig, but the label reads:

Let's Go
This Time Of Night...actually 'Sooner Than You Think' The Village
Shellshock
Way Of Life
In A Lonely Place
As It Is When It Was
Bizarre Love Triangle
Subculture
Ceremony
Blue Monday

Looks about 60-65 min in length actually, but the listing may not be complete or the recording I have may be missing songs.

The sound is really good on this one.

In 2011 the DBS version turned up, which only has up to AIIWIW. This is more muffled, but is listenable.

Transcription:

_Lets___Go_

PH: "Thank you, Ozzie."

They play the instrumental version of this song.

Somebody on stage says "Ready?".

On the DBS version, someone calls out "unreal!".

PH: "Well, let's not get impatient, shall we? Hasty...

A punter cries out "[something] silent?" (probably a song title)

Hooky replies "right".

_Sooner___Than___You___Think_

It's nice hearing this one. The instrumental interplay in the latter part of the song is pretty good, and it ends in a Hooky bass thing.

Bernard plugs his guitar in.

_Shellshock_

Bernard sings "After all of the years..." but leaves off the 2nd part of the line.

_Way___Of___Life_

New Order aren't talking, just playing. It sounds good.

A couple of girls start screaming.

_In___A___Lonely___Place_

I love New Order. Who else would sandwich their debut B-Side between performing their latest album tracks?

The melodica intro is butchered somewhat.

_As___It___Is___When___It___Was_

A tiny bit of guitar noodling before this starts. New Order have been silent since the opening of the second song.

There's a dropout about halfway through this song, which lasts about 30 seconds.

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle_

Girls scream. One calls out for "Temptation".

_Subculture_

The tape probably cuts out a few seconds of the intro.

Bernard throws in a roadie instruction after one of the "a little bit" lines.

BS: "Thank you."

_Ceremony_

After this is done, somebody in the audience cries out "Happy Birthday!" (don't know to whom)

_Blue___Monday_

The intro drum sequence sounds like Perfect Kiss. This may have been a sequencer goof.

PH: "Bernie, god, they sound like a bunch of seals!"

This was in reaction to the crowd doing the "woo woo" whooping that seems to have been endemic to that era.

NO: 05 DEC 86 1018 Club - NYC

Some information from the Cermony List on this performance:

Date: Sat, 11 Aug 2001 21:47:16 -0400
From: Scott Curcie
Subject: (Fac33) shot in the dark request?

I saw New Order about 15 years ago at a place in NYC called 1018 (I think). It was a benefit for someone who passed away. It was in December of 86 or 87. It was for the Brotherhood tour I believe and Karen Finley opened up and smeared chocolate or shit all over herself (yummy). Does anyone have this gig?

What about the NY Felt Forum shows for the LowLife(my first NO show) or the Brotherhood tour? I would really love these as a momentos.

Subject: Re: (Fac33) shot in the dark request?

This is Dec 5 1986, 1018club in nyc (Karen Finley smears chocolate on herself! And shows her breasts. And was Tom Hanks' doctor in "Philadelphia" movie). Great setlist that includes Paradise, Let's go, Atmosphere, LWTUA, and a bunch others; total 76 minute concert, I think. I have 2 sources for this show, on cassette. Two of my contacts recorded this gig, one used D6 the other used D5, both used stereo mics as well. There was some phasing at the venue PA system, though. It was the FIRST new order concert I ever received on cassette (not bootleg LP) in Oct 1990, I really cherish it. I could copy it to DAT and then CDR for you or anyone else; also maybe you can get a download from that neworderonline.com website?

Transcription:

Source tape for this is fairly hissy, but very listenable. Unfortunately, Blue Monday is cut in my copy, and Atmosphere and LWTUA do not appear.

_The___Perfect___Kiss_ starts out with everybody out of tune, but it eventually gels together. 5:55 has somebody saying "You're not supposed to..." and the mic gets moved, causing a disturbance in the Force.

BS: "Thank you very much. We're New Order."

Somebody close to the taper exclaims "All Right, Excellent!" and cries out for "As It Is"

_Paradise_

BS: "Thank You....Thank you. Thank you very much."

Another cry for "As It Is."

_Ceremony_

BS: "Thanks very much...thanks a lot not(?) playing.

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle_

BS: "Eh, this is...you'll find it on the LP, _____ ____ it's called Every Little Counts..." (hard to clearly make this out)

PH: "Is it, eh? is it?" (dunno if Hooky said this, this was muttered)

BS: "Oh no it's not".

Song ends in Let's Go-type chords.

_Every___Little___Counts_

BS: As I was saying, this is Hanaukkah(?)...it's called Every Little Counts"

Firecrackers!

Hooky's bass is prevalent here.

Yet another cry for "As It Is"

_Your___Silent___Face_

PH: "You wanna? What? That's very interesting...[can't make out the rest]"

After the "why don't you piss off?" line, Barney sings "Thank you thank you thank you."

Hooky mumbles something I can't make out after they finish up.

_Lets___Go_

This is the instrumental version. The ending chords are a bit strange.

BS: "Thank you."

_Shellshock_

Barney says something 15 seconds in starting with "Two..." that I can't make out. I think they don't include the extra version in the single version, but play the "Pretty in Pink" version isntead.

BS: "____ _____ we left off the record".

_Temptation_

Drop-out at 4:00, blah.

_Age___Of___Consent_

Very passion-fueled vocals on this one. Also, different-sounding guitar soloing about 3:00 in. Ending is a pleasantly-drawn out affair.

_Blue___Monday_

BS: "This is Blue Monday...thanks...a lot"

BS: [1:39] "This one's for Arthur Baker." "Blue _____".

Barney improvs at 2:45, and inserts whoops at 2:54.

The track abruptly halts at 3:20. Boo hiss. Hopefully I have a part II with the rest of this track, and the Joy Division tracks.

NO: 06 DEC 86 The Orpheum - Boston, Massachusettes

Source is a tape in my archives (Vick 12). This is marked as a first-generation, and sounds like it, excellent dynamics, but a little bit of hiss. Original Waterrat listing omits "This Time of Night" which on my tape appears between Lonesome Tonight and Confusion.

Two minutes of "Funeral for a Viking theme" before the Order take the stage. Barney (I think) barks something I can't make out. Hooky plays the riff to _Blue___Monday_, and we're off!

Volume drop between 3:48 and 3:58, you can hear the mic get bumped when that happens. Another volume drop between 6:30 and 6:40.

BS: "Thank you very much. We're New Order. A few of you remember us from last time, because we still remember you. And you're not going to get out of this building."

_Angel___Dust_

lyric: "watch your blood rush in your _FUCKING_ brain."

BS: "Thank you."

A couple of bass twangs between _Way___Of___Life and _Everythings___Gone___Green_.

Hooky ends the song with the riff to _Lonesome___Tonight_. Barney tunes his guitar a bit.

PH: "Well, I've been really honest toward fucking." (not sure on wording of 'honest toward' here)

Hooky's bass cuts out during the intro solo of _Lonesome___Tonight_, and comes back once Barney is a couple lines into the first verse, making for an interesting sounding variation. Drop out at about 3:25-3:29, which is present in the master.

BS: "Thank you very much....thank you very much indeed."

_This___Time___Of___Night_

BS: "Thanks very much." Barney than mentions something about genetics, and mutters something else I can't make out.

_Confusion_

Ends in feedback. There's an edit after this one. May have been a long between-song gap.

_586_

PH: "This is David."

(afterwards)

BS: "Thank you very much." Weird cyclic feedback effect. Tape fades out right when Hooky twangs his bass, as we're at the A/B split.

Resumes a few seconds before on the flip side for _Age___Of___Consent_

BS: "Thanks a lot, thank you."

Then _Face___Up_ follows.

BS: "Thank you very much. As my uncle Bill says, it's nice to be nice."

_Sunrise_

Appears to be a fan favorite, as folk clap along to it.

Brief muffling at the 3:29 mark.

Bernard says something at the end...definitely not "thank you"...can't make it out, though.

There's a cut between the last track and the first encore track, _Bizarre___Love___Triangle_.

At 5:20, there's a dropout, this may be the side B match for the Lonesome Tonight dropout. End of BLT has a neat guitar outro. Neatly segues into _The___Perfect___Kiss_ as the drum sequencer intros while Barney solos.

Rousing version of the same.

BS: "Thank you very much. Thank you very much, goodnight!"

NEW ORDER'S HIDDEN SPARK

Bob Pfeiffer
December 9, 1986; Page C08
Section: STYLE
Word Count: 269

New Order is, at its core, a garage band with some very expensive toys and a dance beat that won't quit. No problem, especially to the many rows of gyrating, happy hipsters who filled Constitution Hall last night. The garage factor is there in the way Gillian Gilbert can barely play a one-string lead on her guitar, or the way Peter Hook plays his bass somewhere around his shoestrings, or the way Bernard Albrecht's wavering monotone cracks endearingly on the high notes. Again, fine,

Transcription:

My source says this is a fourth generation tape. The master must have been a beauty because my copy is still very listenable, not sounding like it has the harshness of a recording that has seen one too many dubbings, nor does it have noticeable tape hiss, so it's likely that the generation info I've been given may be wrong.

Up to the encore, there's very little audible band interaction with the audience. Odd considering the enthusiasm evidenced by the crowd, which is captured very well on my version.

"IKONFCL" taped this gig as well, and reports that:

"I recorded this on a Sony Walkman WM-F70 using the supplied electret microphone and a Metal ES cassette. The venue was DAR Constitution Hall and IMO, this is not the best venue to see a show as it's very boomy."

The version I have is superior-sounding compared to his source. I supplied a sample of it to IKONFCL and he remarked "whoever taped yours was an old pro." However, my copy isn't perfect, as at a few points the sound distorts, the sound is harsh and trebly (this may have been EQ'ed to overcome the acoustics) and the tape itself is half a semitone fast as well as compressed.

pre-gig Backing music is Anarchy In The UK by The Sex Pistols.

Intro to _Elegia_

BS: "Thank you very much."

And another "Thank you very much" after the tune finishes. Hooky's bass emits some purrs.

_Paradise_

Brief dropout within the first few seconds (not on rburton tape).

_The___Village_, _Dreams___Never___End_, _Leave___Me___Alone_, and _All___Day___Long_ all follow.

After _Subculture_

BS: "Thank you very much. Bridge..."

_Weirdo_

lyric: "Just like a lock without a fucking key" (all occurances)

After _The___Perfect___Kiss_

BS: "Thank you very much....Thanks a lot." (clears throat)

(encore, PA is playing 'Funeral For A Viking' music which they began to employ during their 86 tour)

_Every___Little___Counts_

Somebody (most likely Barney) says "Thank you very much" off-mic.

BS: "This is Every Little Counts. See, that's a very popular song."

(false start as synth bass suddenly stops)

BS: "Sorry about that...must have stopped it."

(Think this is Barney, it's a bit off-mic)

BS: "Why the fucking crap?"

_Face___Up_

(I guess somebody threw a coin at Barney)

BS: "Good night's corner(?) and play another song now, I don't reckon exactly what it is..."

lyric: "I've heard it all before, I've heard it all before, I can't hear it any FUCKING more..."

NO: 09 DEC 86 Felt Forum - New York

Turns out I have a pretty nice gem here, as the sound quality is really good and as bonus tracks, there's renditions by 10000 Maniacs of 'She's Lost Control' and "Love Will Tear Us Apart' taken from their performance at Old Main Inn, NYC 21 Apr 82 which are excellent. IMO early 10000 Maniacs' sound completely blew away the overproduced morass of their later productions.

The track listing matches what is listed in Waterrat.

Some good quotables, need help with somebody who has a better ear for transcribing Bernard Sumner's Manc-accented rants than I apparently do.

Pre-gig music is the Pistols' "Anarchy In The UK".

_Blue___Monday_

PH: "Hello again."

_This___Time___Of___Night_ features a couple of lyrical variations.

BS: "Thank you very much."

During _Weirdo_

lyric: "I know you, you know me, and we're as fucked up as we can be"

_Thieves___Like___Us_

PH: "What?...Can't hear ya...You see, New York is so wild, they have to have a 15 foot gap between you and us."

_Confusion_

BS: "Thank you, thank you...I've always liked New York. Always."

_586_

BS: "Get a bit excited on the old [wy...] remember. Here's our artistic intrpretation of it..."

lyric: "I can't see what I think...I see my future before me, right here beneath my balls."

_Angel___Dust_

BS: "I'd like to dedicate this song to Eddie of [can't make out]? who ripped off one of these records. But he's a personal friend of mine, ...fucking mad..(?)."

I had thought Bernard was talking about the samples on this song (not present in the live version) but that's apparently not the case.

There's some untitled bass/guitar noodling between _586_ and _Everythings___Gone___Green_, and _Temptation_ ends on a bass solo.

Also, the rowdy NY crowd wasn't very appreciative of the background music played before the encore (includes some number with the chorus of 'heartbeat'). You can clearly hear people yelling to turn "that fucking shit off".

NO wrap things off with _Shellshock_.

NO: 10 DEC 85 El Dorado - Paris

From a M/2 tape in my collection.

_Your___Silent___Face_ opens the set.

_Dreams___Never___End_

(at end)

BS: "Hello, everyone. You gotta sit down(?) because no... [something, 'an old friend?'] is our road crew." Because your immigration laws won't let our road crew into the country, because of their extremely low IQ."

_Temptation_ follows.

Profanity in this one.

Bernard says something that doesn't sound like a standard "thank you very much".

_Subculture_ is next on the menu.

A single piano note between this and the next song, _Leave___Me___Alone_.

There's some cuts at about 3:20 and 3:30 of this track, and right at the end. Some guitar riffing at the end.

Lots of fan shouting before the band play _Sooner___Thank___You___Think_.

_State___Of___The___Nation_

BS: "This next song is a new song. Anyone know how to speak English? I can't speak French, it's called 'Shame Of The Nation', it's about prostitutes with big tits. [this comment elicits lots of laughter] It's about feelings in the nation."

On the tape I have, it cuts near the end.

_Blue___Monday_

The tape preserves a part of Hooky's solo bass intro.

BS: "What, there's a bit of Italian, please." A drum hit, some shouts, and a wait while New Order prepare their next number.

_Age___Of___Consent_

PH: "Just can't get good help anywhere." (probably alluding to the lack of road crew on the scene)

_Atmosphere_

PH: "C'mon, another conversation, you can't win, fucking 'ell. One two three four."

This ends the main set.

_Sunrise_

The taper unpauses during the bass intro line, so the very start is missed.

BS: "Thanks very much, good night."

NO: 12 DEC 86 Fox Theatre - Atlanta, Georgia

Date: Fri Nov 17 01:22:37 1989
From: Kevin J Martin
Subject: More lyric wars...

About Blue Monday lyrics:
I had always assumed it was
"Thought I told you to meet me
When I walked down to the beach
Tell me... how do I feel?
Tell me now... how should I feel?"

Is there no official source? Admittedly, such sources often don't jibe with what the singer actually sings; when I saw N.O. play in Atlanta on the Brotherhood tour (if it was actually called that), they changed around the lyrics as they saw fit. Of course, part of it could have been their utter frustration with technical problems; like mistiming of the sequencers on Face Up, or the bass coming unplugged from the amp during a *solo* on State of the Nation, or the opening of Love Vigilantes creating incredible feedback (good for a J&MC concert, maybe...). Anyway, Age of Consent had one clearly modified line: "You're not the type who needs to tell me... just what the f**k to do!" And Bernard didn't seemed pleased...

This suggests that the problems that plagued the group in '85 in Atlanta would show no signs of abating.

Source is a second-gen cassette clone from TMK. The first part of this recording sounds a bit quiet, and recorded from upstairs, but is otherwise clear....but it turns out that's the 'filler' version, the full recording is much better balanced.

_State___Of___The___Nation_

The TMK-sourced recording starts a few seconds into the song.

Bernard chuckles or chokes a bit on the word "salvation" during the first chorus. During the latter part there's some audience chatter that sounds like somebody wanted somebody to be quiet, or the volume was too low. At that point, the right channel cuts out at 3:38 but recovers at 4:25.

There's the sound of something hitting the mic and an edit point here as the taper's still adjusting levels. Quite likely this is from a second source supplied to fill in the main tape's missing portion, as the main version has the taper saying, "Happened again", and replies to his female partner's inquiry with "Pause button."

_Love___Vigilantes_

Like SoTN above, you can hear feedback mentioned by Kevin J Martin, if you listen closely...it doesn't seem to hurt the recording any.

_Way___Of___Life_

voice: "Somebody up on stage mixing. They got these guys mixing back here. Never...never seen that." The taper says something about what's going on, can't quite make it out, with the first voice then saying, "These guys up here are, aren't they? They're doing the monitor. Okay".

Then someone else says, "That's a great idea..."

Bit of a drop out after the chorus, "...seems to fall apart and leave you crying." Staccato guitar solo for this song, which goes a bit off-tune.

BS: "Thank you very much."

_Sooner___Than___You___Think_ follows. And then everybody's favorite dirge, _Elegia_.

Afterwards...

BS: "Thank you very much. We'll play something a bit faster now, that tune you'd notice that anyway, called, eh, _Angel___Dust_. [As long as it's money enough...]

Next is _586_.

_Subculture_

Bernard makes an exclamation as the synths go "moo". I kid you not.

Hooky plays a little bass tune between songs.

_Face___Up_

There's a pretty interesting conversation through the bridge that mentions Chuck Berry and something about being 37-38.

Ends with a Hooky solo.

_Age___Of___Consent_

Some girl screams insanely when she hears them start to play this.

lyric: "I'm not the kind that needs to tell you/ Just what the fuck you want me to"

Edit between these songs.

_The___Perfect___Kiss_

Ends with the female moaning bit.

Edit between last song of main set and encore.

_Temptation_

Stereo shift during the first part (initial guitar riff) (TMK)

You can hear fans complain that they've closed the bar, and that someone isn't coming out again. When bernard sings, "It was urgent to myself," a voice can be heard asking his partner if she wants to move over one.

Amusing bit, somebody working the PA turns Bernard down on the swear word when he sings "the last fucking time" bit, but they of course can't anticipate him then singing, "I've never seen anybody fuck like you before" as revenge.

Hooky ends the proceedings with a drawn out solo, that segues into _Do___The___Ostrich_, which is the first time they've performed this particular number.

lyric: "Do the ostrich...do do the ostrich..."

One of Bernard's better solos in here, and quite a good performance, consistent with the observation that the Order's best of any live song is the first rendition of it.

Speeds up near the end, now *this* is reminiscent of J&MC.

BS: "Thank you very much, good night!"

Hooky proceeds to play on a bit.
