A list of the whereabouts of every known copy of Sordide Sentimental SS33002, featuring Joy Division's Atmosphere/Dead Souls and a colour booklet with an essay.

There were 1,578 of these issued, with all genuine entries numbered. See http://www.joydiv.org/S5.htm for more information, including how to spot fakes. There's also a JD Central thread with lots of discussion about additional ones that pop up which I use to populate this listing, here: http://lwtua.websitetoolbox.com/post/1578-sordide-sentimental-2640372

As you can see, I have quite a long way to go! But with about 230 copies trainspotted, I'm getting there. Please email updates AT new-order DOT net if you have some you want to add or alert me to.

[TEST] - There are apparently three test pressing copies (no numbering) in existence. JPT has one for sale here (the link is defunct now): http://sordide-sentimental.com/shop/index.php?productID=144 All yours for the princely sum of 5000 Euro (well, not any more!)
[0002] - In a Q interview in the 2000-1 timeframe, Hooky claims that Ian Curtis received #0002, while he only got #0011. (Thanks to 'Brett' for this spot).
[0005] - 'andyj' (JDC). "New member here, hopefully I can fill in another gap !! I have copy #0005, it was actually given to me by Debbie, I was 14/15 years old at the time. The record has never been played and the whole package is in mint condition, I also own an original Ideal for Living ep, this was given to me by Ian." and "No huge story, Debbie is my cousin so that's how I got these recordings. Btw copy no.5 of Sordide Sentimentale contains a print by Jean Pierre Turmel entitled "Internal Hate of War", there are apparently only 10 of these and I have #002. Often wondered from time to time on the value of this and Ideal for Living Ep , wouldn't probably sell though. Big Joy Division fan of course, saw Peter Hook down here in Auckland few weeks ago, enjoyed it to be fair."
[0006] - In a 1994 interview with Jon Savage, Hooky claims that Ian Curtis received #0006. (http://www.jonsavage.com/film/peter-hook/).

If this is true, somehow it ended up on eBay 2012-03-25 'suenal2004' GBP 490: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VERY-RARE-JOY-DIVISION-SORDIDE-SENTIMENTAL-7VINYL-/251022528966?clk_rvr_id=407038890973&nma=true&si=ytRvozXBda57mjC4X8CEOhafv1I%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 (note: no pic with number)

[0011] - Hooky claims in a Q interview that he has this one. 'Brett' comments that we know that Hooky's recollection may not be completely accurate, and based on the above, I agree.
[0016] - eBay 2013-11-07. GBP 275 ('toys_and_collectables_2005'). See: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Joy-Division-Licht-und-Blindheit-Sordide-Sentimental-Number-16-Signed-by-Hooky-/190952156541?ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:GB:1120&clk_rvr_id=541944541055

"Joy Division Atmosphere/Dead Souls 7" Original Pressing 1578 Copies Pressed, all the Inserts Signed Twice by Peter Hook. The Lowest Number I believe has ever been listed on Ebay...No 16, even Hooky asked me where I got it from. Signed by Hooky at the Urbis in Manchester during Hacienda Display and again at the Arches in Glasgow during his Hacienda Book Tour." Reported as being on sale again on 2021-10-24.

[0024] - 'Zigzagshild251'. "Hi There.. Just wondered if you wish to know the whereabouts of another 'treasured' copy of "Licht Und Blindheit" and let me know how to add my copy to your list? It has never been listed for sale previously and is No.#24/#1578 and in Pristine Condition thruout.. (except for the inevitable browning of the glue on the inside wallet and slight wrinkling of back card.), I am more than happy to send Photos if you wish?

NB. I had always thought that possibly the first 20 or so numbered copies would have been sent to the Band and Manager (etc) so it was nice to read about some other early numbered copies.."

[0027] - 2021-01-20 - 'DAYOFPIGS'. (JDC)

Hello,

Good evening every body here and sorry for my english language, i m french[

I have a copy of the 7" Licht und blindheit, number 000027. complete and like new (no plastic bag)

For his history, i bought it in 1991 i think. It was in a little records shop in Paris.

A this time i gone to all the new records shops, hoping to find collectors and good records for good prices.

In this shop the guy said to me "you look for JD records", Oh Yess! Ok i 've a rare record here and he shown to me a virgin copy of L U B.

He said that he obtain it directly by JP Turmel, there is all the Sordide sentimental records in this shop, all news and perhaps not only one copy of each???

I return at home and i phone to him the evening "please keep the Licht und blindheit for me, i come tomorrow morning and i buy it"...

Before to go to my work, i go to buy it, a fantastic day, i was 23 years old and it was one of my first collector item.

I paid it 450 FF ( 90 euros).

Now i go to PH live shows with my daughters, one of her is 23 years old.

Life is strange sometimes

[0037] - 'Fred': "Hi Happy One and Group. Later to the party than other members, I have Sordide Sentimental SS 33002 Serial 000037. Near Mint if not mint condition, all enclosures included. Bought in 1982 or 1983 from shop near Portobello Rd, either Vinyl Solution or Vinyl Revolution. No SS plastic bag. Readers may find it interesting that when I bought it, I was given one or two A4 pages of typed notes (lost - sorry about that) that I can only recall best as office notes. They weren't a list of Factory Output Numbers and Disks. Perhaps other owners may have had similar style notes given to them as they got theirs?."
[0038] - 'interzone79' (JDC). "I am the owner of the number 38. My copy is like new, in an immaculate condition...never played, stored with passion!..." Pictures here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/26494411%40N02/sets/72157645791239795/

"I am the first and only owner of this item. I bought it from France by mail when it was released, in 1979 and it has basically been laying on the shelf since then.

This single plays at 33 rpm, not 45 rpm. It's basically in the same condition as it was when I received it. Singles pressing quality is never brilliant but this one is clearly better than most. As far as I can remember the few times it was played it was played on my Linn Axis with a Linn K9 cartridge. I very much doubt there is another copy in such good condition. If you're really serious about this, I can digitalize it and send a very compressed mp3 by e-mail, so that you can check the condition of the record - you'll be amazed."

Owner is in Portugal.

Was reauctioned in early August 2009, went for GBP 686.00, and bought by slumpy [JDC]. See: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Sordide-Sentimental-39-Joy-Division-Rare-7_W0QQitemZ290336313542QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Records?hash=item43996490c6&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 [URL invalid]

Noted by "RiotNrrrd":

"... also comes with the rare Sordide Sentimental bag for the cover that came with the first 100 copies or so"

Am I the only one that smells a rat? I've never heard of any originals coming with that bag, much less "the first 100 copies or so".

"Cover: Excellent Plus (EX+). Nice except for usual bends on left and right in the middle portion of the back of the triptych cover from two sides of the 45rpm, which happened to almost every copy because of the original packaging. See photos."

Given the photos, no way is that "EX+".

There is some discussion starting here about bags: http://lwtua.websitetoolbox.com/post/show_single_post?pid=1326682935&postcount=481&forum=21830 I concur with 'streptile' that while some early 80s copies could have shipped with SS bags, these were likely not with the records originally and were only added after-the-fact once collectors believed these were enhance the value of their offering.

[0066] - Email from Festa Allesandro (2014-06-12). Thought I would own up to owning 336. Given to me as a present in 1981 - it was bought in, I think, in PlasticFactory in Oasis Birmingham for £20. It is missing the translation and has a small tear on the cover.

It's claim to fame is that it was borrowed by my English teacher who was going out with a member of ACR at the time and they had never seen one! My reward was a copy of their first single, plus Flight 12" :-)"

There aren't. Copy is in near mint condition, complete with all inserts, but came without plastic bag. [0456] - JDC ('kered5'). Acquired from a friend who was given a chance by Hooky to see the gig free if he sold his copy to kered5.

"My mate and I made the short trip to from his house in Rochdale to Bury in his beaten up Volkswagen Scirocco. We didn't have tickets for the Derby Hall gig but made the trip anyway in the hope that we could find someone with spare ones outside the venue.

Once we got there, we asked around for tickets...but there were none forthcoming. After a couple of pints in the pub around the corner, undeterred, we decided to hang around on the off chance that some tickets would turn up. After about half an hour, the side door of the Derby Hall opened and one Mr Peter Hook came out...ostensibly for a bit of fresh air. Obviously, when me and my mate saw him, we approached our hero and starting talking to him!!!! We told him our predicament and he seemed sympathetic. We then got on to the subject of records and we asked him about the new album etc etc. We also discussed the Sordide Sentimental release which was a sore subject for me...My mate had two copies which one of his relatives had bought for him whilst on holiday in France and he absolutely refused to sell me one despite my frequent pleas. I told Hooky this and he came up with a proposal!!! He told my mate that if he agreed to sell me one of the Sordide Sentimentals then he would get us both in free to the gig!!! Reluctantly...my mate agreed and Hooky got us in!!! (I still have the copy today!!!)."

[0678] - Rob Berends, correspondence.

Saw the list online with whereabouts of 'Licht und Blindheit' copies. My copy has the number 678.

I saw Joy Division play when I was in London on holiday in the summer of '79 (Prince Of Wales Conference Centre).

I bought the ticket at Small Wonder Records (Walthamstow). According to the guy delivering the tickets there (while I was there too) the batch he delivered was the first batch of all tickets for this show. I bought the first one.

In January '80, Joy Division played at the Doornroosje venue in my home-town Nijmegen, The Netherlands. I was one of the volunteers working at this venue (400 capacity youth centre / concert hall) and the one on the phone the most with booking agents and bands, so I probably negotiated the deal (on behalf of the team of volunteers I was member of). The band's manager Rob Gretton was also there and we met. In March '80, Licht und Blindheit was released, and one of my colleagues in the volunteers-group at Doornroosje bought a copy at record shop Bullit in Eindhoven. I was unable to find a copy for sale. Then I called Rob Gretton, also for a chat, and when I asked him about L&B, he said he still had two copies. He double-checked my (PO Box) address with me, but did not promise or announce anything. About a week later I saw an LP-cardboard-envelope in my PO Box, and got really nervous. Is it maybe ... ??

It was one of those old-fashioned U.K.-style LP-cardboard-envelopes: one layer, no corrugated layer, open on one side only when ready for use. And it looked scary: it was bent, and fitted into the not-very-wide PO Box. 'Hope nothing is broken', I thought.

The sender was indeed Rob Gretton!

I opened the envelope rather impatiently tearing it open top-to-bottom, the part that was folded over. After that I realised this might have been very stupid! But... no worries, L&B was in perfect condition!

'Dead Souls' to this day is my favourite Joy Division song.

[0685] - Anderz W., in email

Hi,
Stumbled upon your list and thought that I could share the one I have with you, hoping it is a "real" one. It is currently living in Sundbyberg, Stockholm, Sweden since 201606.

It has the serration around the label on the vinyl, it has the inserts and matrix numbers are hand written and the glue is brown. However mine has a plastic bag with the Sordide Sentimental logo... The number is 000685.

I bought it back in 2001606 from Giovanni Corbari from Ravenna who I also bought the 12" An Ideal for Living from before this one. I found him on Discogs, https://www.discogs.com/user/giomusics, where he at least advertised the 12". I don't remember if the hat the Sordide Sentimental on there as well. I paid 1200 EUR for the 7". I asked him how he had obtained these records and he told me the following story:

---------------story------------------

story of this bunch of this lps, Joy Division included happened in march, a man call me by phone and told me that he has 100 lp old. i went to his house and i saw all records original, from 1977 to 1982, all UK pressing of course i was really interest to buy, but this man told me another story, he works for the original owner, this man is italian but in '80 years worked in England and love post punk, industrial and experiment music. so, the man that i met worked as bricklayer, and repair years ago the roof of the original owner lp. but at end works don't have money to pay, and give the records to him.

so it ask me 8000 euro (cost of roof repair), but i told him it was too much for 100 lps. after that he sold me the records for a acceptable price.

when i've checked carefully the lp i saw it was all original pressing, and some are rare like this lp and and another one, a 7" of Joy division original first press on sordide sentimental label, a numbered edition with all insert included, i've also another Joy 2 lp, still in different hard cover, plus many other of small but interest british group.

it was really a nice and rare lps, but unfortunately for the original owner that like this music but exchanged for a work in his house.

--------------end-of-story----------

Hoping that this might be useful for your list.

[0756] - JDC, 'xyling': "I always keep tabs on the Sordide Sentimental single. I bought mine in probably 1994 or so in Los Angeles in the days before eBay from a small collectors record shop. I saw it advertised for sale along with the original Ideal For Living 7" and made the trip up to the north side of the city to check it out. I really wanted Ideal For Living since the sleeve was probably folded by one of the band members, but I inspected it and checked it out. It really is not such a pretty item! The owner played it for me to check the condition and I thought it sounded awful. Now that I've read more about it, I think they originally sounded terrible! In any case, I passed on it and got SS (number 756) instead. It is in pretty good shape- has the inserts and the vinyl looks and sounds perfect. The trifold is somewhat wrikled because the vellum glued in pocket seemed to have shrunken at a faster rate than the cover. Minor bend mark as well. I keep it at work in a locked cabinet because the temperature control is better there! I think I'm at the point where prices have driven me to consider selling- I bought it for $125 which I thought was a grand price at the time; now, the prices are unbelievable. I think Joy Division has a much greater following with the documentaries and compilations that have been coming out over the last 20 years, so I guess this is logical."

[0835] - Sent into me by DAWS: "Not sure if this qualifies to be added to the list [ed. note: it does!] but I have the cover to no. 835, no record unfortunately, but feel free to summarise the story below and add it if it's appropriate. I was at a car boot sale in Cambridge, UK, in the summer of 2013. Lurking in a box of records was unmistakably SS in a protective sleeve. Knowing it's significance I almost passed out on the spot. I then noticed a Post-It note stuck to the plastic sleeve saying "Cover only, no record". This took a few seconds to compute, and sure enough, when I was able to examine it, it was the cover only, no record, no inserts, but obviously an original with the brown glue, which I was already familiar with. "Where's the record for this, mate", I said. "Dunno, he said, if you can get one, it's worth a lot by all accounts. "Is it? I replied, trying to sound half-interested. The seller went on "Yeah. I bought a job lot of records a while back, and inside the sleeve to Closer, there was that. Make me an offer if you want. You could always track down the record itself and put them together." Well, I was way ahead of him there. I left the car boot after giving him a tenner and have since spent far too much time than is healthy searching for its long lost 7" brother. The record only does sometimes come up on ebay but I've only got to hear about them afterwards. Let me know if you ever come across a current listing. --DAWS

UPDATE

Thought would like an update on post #298 from 3 Jan 2015 (see page 12). You'll see my story about getting hold of the cover only (aaargh!) for no. 835.

Well, since buying this from a car boot (aka flea market / yard sale) in the summer of 2013 I have spent the last 5 years looking for the 7" to go with it.

I can now happily report that a single only listing came up on ebay at the end of March and I was successful in my bid. What about the inserts I hear you cry, well my brother (see post #348) very kindly let me make copies of his.

Aah, my life is complete.

Hello

I discover your site and the list you maintain of all the Sordide Sentimental Joy Division single copies.

Mine is number 875. I don't see it our your list.

I bought it, on ebay I think, in september 2013 (I have kept the stamped cardboard envelope). I don't remember how much exactly I paid it, something around $700.

For the anecdote, it took about four months to travel from California to France. Some kind of a stress. The 1979/1980 actual price was 24 french francs, which was around 4 EUR at the birth of euros. Someting like $5.

No. 875 is now in Brittany, not so far from its original birth place in Normandy (Rouen).

[1199] - JDC, 'Rumpeller'. "I have number 1199 and it's happily living with me in Poole, UK.

I've had this since the mid to late 1980's and I think I paid about £75 for it back in the day. The same price I paid for my An Ideal For Living 7".

It was one of the first things I saved up for when I left school and started my first job. It's got the inserts and is in the plastic sleeve. The strange thing is that the plastic sleeve has the Sordide Sentimental logo printed on it. I read that it shouldn't have the logo on it ... but it does ... and it's definitely genuine. It's all proved to be correct by the usual stuff, including the aged glue, etc.

I love it as much as a piece of artwork as I do for it's music, although I only played the disc a couple of times, as it was (and still is) so beautiful."

[1203] - (benno, via email). "I have just discovered your list of the known whereabouts of Joy Division's "Licht und Blindheit" records. I have no. 001203. I have owned it since 1980, having purchased it just after Ian Curtis died. I also have copies of every officially-released JD vinyl disc. I presently reside in Cumbria. I hope this helps to make your list a little bit more complete." [1216] - K Manton. "The copy that I have is number 1216. It is in mint condition, not a blemish on the vinyl and the folder is in my opinion perfect. the clear plastic folder it comes in has some slight fading to the sordid sentimentale logo but no tears. slight creases to the clear folder are visible. I bought my copy from a record shop on Oldham Street, Manchester 20-25 years ago. It has been in my possesion since (still in Manchester) and I have never played it! I probably never will play it.....i am scared to!"

This one is number 1257. It's all in reasonable nick, just a bit of wear around the edges and the usual browning where the glue went. It's also sadly missing the inserts, but the vinyl is in really nice condition. I've attached a pic of the numbered page, and let me know if you want to see any more.

Good luck in your hunt!"

The cover has the usual browned glue with the tracing paper that holds the vinyl and inserts coming a way a little bit. However, the main problem is on the inside fold out cover the top of the middle page has at some point stuck to the other two pages and so there is a 10 cm wide by 2 cm deep patch with the writing gone on both left and right side. Very annoying! The outside cover is in good condition as is the vinyl itself and I have all the inserts and bags." Pictures here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/88472480@N02/

"Incredibly scarce 1st pressing. Stamped as Number 001511 of 1578. Vinyl is VG+, very clean with only a couple of very light surface marks visible under bright grading lights. Labels are clean. The glue on the Vellum pocket is starting to go at the top left corner (to about 2" down) and at the bottom in the usual spot from the weight of the record. The textured sleeve is in overall good shape but there is some wear. The front has a couple of handing dents and the 7" was stored inside of the sleeve so the back has puffed up a bit around where the record was. This has resulted in some overall bending of the back sleeve. The bottom left corner has a ding and there is minor wear to the other corners. It honestly blends in and isn't that noticeable when looking at it as a whole, but please see the photos- they have been lit to hopefully accurately bring out the flaws. The 7" is housed in it's original thin plastic sleeve but there is no outer thin plastic sleeve. This one was stored in a folded standard plastic LP sleeve (with the original purchase sticker on it). Includes both original inserts. The Gesamtkunstwerk insert has very minor handling wear and the Licht Und Blindheit booklet has some light bending at the upper right. Please be in touch if you have any additional questions."

updated 2016-05-05: "I still have 1512. Record in very good condition I played it a few times when I first got it direct from SS by post. Sleeve in good condition, It's got that kind of bulge in the back that I've seen described a few times., the front of the sleeve is in very good condition. I bought two of them at the New Rose record-shop in Paris, I don't remember the exact date, but certainly March or April 1980. It was before Ian Curtis' death anyway. None of them had a plastic bag. I thought I paid them 17 francs each at the time, but I saw someone else saying 24 francs. It most certainly depended from the shop (added to the fact that my mermory is not that good after such a long time). I sold a copy quite soon (maybe in the 90's) to a girl in Strasbourg who wanted to make a gift to her lucky boyfriend. Unfortunately, I don't remember which number it had, and how much I sold it (although it was already quite a good deal at the time). The other (1542/1578) is now on sale on Discogs. Best, JP"

A couple of years later I was poor enough that I needed to sell my copy (I still regret it now), advertised it at the back of the NME & ended up meeting a girl from Coventry in Brum centre who bought my copy for 50GBP to give to her boyfriend as a present.

Just putting this here in case the story jogs any memories. Meanwhile this brilliant thread has prompted me to try and get in touch with with J-PT with the hope that he kept records of who who he sold them too. Probably not but here's hoping.

All the very best with tracking down all the other copies, a noble quest indeed.

Take care,

Stephan
