NO: 16 JUL 98 Apollo Theatre - Manchester, England

See http://www.new-order.net/no/gigs/nogigs98.html#NO-980715 for a writeup of the soundcheck. Running order is the same as the gig proper, but the recording only starts partway through Bizarre Love Triangle.

Here's my summary based on the recordings available of this performance:

Alan Wise introduces the band.

"How did you all get into my dressing room? Listen, the band wants to thank the Mean Fiddler organization, particularly Vince Fowler and Melvin Benn, for giving them their break, the chance to play again.

All right, forgive me, but the band aren't quite ready yet, because Hooky's on the, eh, karzi with another curry, Bernard's taking his Prozac, and Steve and Gillian, that's the drummer and pianist, she's the girl in the band, not Bernard, are snorting cocaine in the dressing room like pigs.

But, as you know, it's five years, 1923(sic), since the last show at the Alley Cat in Reading, I think he was. Since then, this is what the band have been doing. Peter's been signing on and doing bricklaying. Bernard's been in Tibet in Dara Salan studying Sufi, strangely, Sufi mysticism. Steve and Gillian have been working for UNICEF helping teach victims of mines to play musical instruments.

And me, I've been on the road, know what I mean?

So as rock and roll never dies, but the royalties do, welcome for the very last time on stage...JOY DIVISION!"

New Order come out on stage.

_Regret_

BS: "Hi everyone, we're New Order. And we're gonna rock the house. This is Regret".

_Touched___By___The___Hand___Of___God_

BS: "Thank you. Thanks a lot. This next song's called Touched By The Hand Of God."

Lots of 'NuOrder' chants.

_Isolation_

First time this song is ever played by New Order, of course.

BS: "Thank you...Okay, this next song is a Joy Division song, it's called Isolation."

_Ceremony_

PH: "This one's for my brother Paul, it's his birthday today. Happy Birthday Paul! And watch out you lot, cuz he's a copper!"

BS: "Okay?"

_Atmosphere_

First time New Order play the JD song in over ten years.

PH: "Thank you very much" (Bernard cuts in at the word 'very')

BS: "I'll tell you what exactly what happened. Is it me or is it hot in here? I think you've got a bit of a temperature."

BS: "Thank you very much."

_Heart___And___Soul_

First time New Order ever cover this song.

BS: "Jason, is that an orange juice on my amp? Get me a proper fuckin' drink!"

BS: (during the song intro) "My amp...yeah".

Hooky mangles the bassline at one or two points. Barney sounds like he's reading this off an autocue.

_Paradise_

PH: (sighs) "A loss for words again."

BS: "Fucking knackered!"

PH: "Bernard."

PS: "There's another two hours to go as well" (crowd cheers)

Alright, this is Paradise."

Bernard sha la lalala's through this tune, what do you want from me?

BS: "Thank you"

_Confusion_

PH: "If I had a word to say..."

BS: "This is Confusion!"

Some of the instrumentation is different than what is heard before, and there's a "here we go" sample in the middle. Hooky's bass is all over this tune too.

A portion of this performance made it into the 511 DVD, the part where Barney plays bass.

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle_

BS: "I do look like that twat from U2 with this one."

After song finishes.

BS: "Thank you." (you can hear the fans shout New Order over and over)

_True___Faith_ (Perfecto)

BS: "Okay. It's that jazz fusion verion of True Faith."

Hooky yells out halfway through the song "Come on, Manchester!". The master this was taken from has an edit two-thirds of the way into the song, this may have been at the A/B swap point (yes, this appears to have been recorded onto a cassette).

_Temptation_

BS: This is Temptation....bass sequencer down a bit, please."

_Blue___Monday_

BS: "This is Blue Monday, or as the Japanese say, Brue Monday."

(they play Blue Monday)

BS: "Thank you very much. It's been fucking great!"

fans:

"So, I'm going to kill somebody in a minute!" "Alex, what do you think, man?"

Alan Wise comes back on.

"Well, you want them back? They go down, they're both crap and good at the same time, they're brilliant, they're good at style, give them a shout, shout for New Order."

The fans indeed shout. They come back on after a few minutes.

BS: "It's nice to be back. I believe this is called the encore, right? We don't normally do them, but since it's Manchester, and since there's so many gangsters in the audience, we've been persuaded to do it. (Pause) That was a joke. All right, here we go, this is called...eh, Run."

They play _Run_.

BS: "Thank you."

Very nice solo guitar intro, before Sumner introduces the next song.

_Love___Will___Tear___Us___Apart_

BS: "This is called L'Amour Will Tear Us Apart"

I really like the Apollo version of this song.

BS: "Thank you! (as LWTUA ends in a wail of feedback)

_In___A___Lonely___Place_

A part of this performance appears on the 511 DVD. Good melodica solo and video of Gillian.

BS: (near the end of the song): "Ian Curtis rest in peace, man!"

They finish off. Alan Wise talks again.

"Well, that is it tonight, because that's your lot. But do remember that they're at the Reading Festival so go and see them at Reading. Thank you very very much for coming, the boys promise (and girls) that they will not stay away so long again. They've promised you. They won't let you down. New Order, ladies and gentlemen! One last round of applause and thank you for coming."

NO: 30 AUG 98 Reading Festival, England

The following pages archive fan reports from the gigs (the older entries):

http://phaistos.forthnet.gr/cgi-bin/markp/readgb.cgi?name=NOGIG

Both the BBC broadcast and at least two audinece gigs are extant. The BBC stuff has all the profanity edited out of course.

Alan Wise:

(you can clearly hear hecklers slagging him off)

"Anyone seen the toilets? Before we start, some messages for the fan club. Joey Peters(?) says he's sorry, it's your choice, and he'll always support you. You have to bear with them really, cuz you know this group aren't really on time.

Listen, this is what the group's been up to. Peter Hook's been with another band, we don't know the name of them, but they were on earlier. Bernard's been in Tibet, he's in a monastery. And you know the boy and girl that play with the group, well, what's their names? They've been doing something else anyway.

How many here have actually come for the group or have you been waiting for...(tremendous cheers drown Alan out) Why have you got nothing better to do? You could be listening to Mahler or Beethoven instead of this tribal stuff.

Anyway, ladies and gentlemen, I'm getting a signal from the side now, so I don't want to keep you waiting. Here is the boy you've been waiting for, Newt Order."

Newt Order take the stage. Or not.

"Awrite...we're have been doing South, mix could we" is song to horrible C&W accompaniment.

Alan interrupts...

Sorry, [name?], sorry, a slight mistake with the booking there, Vince and Melvin. You got it wrong, that's not the bloody band! I'm sorry about that, we're just getting them around I regret. Maybe I've forgotten the name and the address of everyone I've ever known. Didn't say that before. Ladies and Gentlemen, the fun stops here...no it doesn't.

Here you are. They've been off work because they've been poorly. But they're back now. Welcome if you will (are they there?) our old friends from Crumpsall, Warsaw."

_Regret_

Chants of New Order, New Order...

Bernard takes the mic

BS: "Hi, we're New Order. This is Reading, you're the audience, let's rock the FUCKING HOUSE."

(Regret is played)

BS: "Thank you very much."

_Touched___By___The___Hand___Of___God_

BS: "The next song is called Touched By The Hand Of God."

(Touched is played)

BS: "Thank you very much."

_Isolation_

BS: "The next song is our last, and then we're off back to Manchester."

There's definitely been some punch-ins done as the audience version of this has Barney missing a part of the "pleasures and wayward distractions" line, and the mixer/316 version, where it is present.

_Ceremony_

They run throught the first chord, and then stop. Hooky started early, it seems.

PH: "You guessed yet?"

BS: "This is Ceremony."

Instruments cut off for a split second near the end of the song. Somebody screams at the end. More football chants.

BS: "Thanks a lot, you're a great audience. Every single fucking one of you. Apart from that guy over there, with the dark glasses on."

BS: "Yeah."

_Atmosphere_ is played with no introduction.

BS: "Thank you very much."

PH: "Thank you, oh it's a bit low Jerry, a little bit louder please, one two one two, that's better."

_Heart___And___Soul_ is played with no further introduction.

BS: "Thank you."

_Love___Will___Tear___Us___Apart_

BS: "Well, there's no use in shouting New Order, cuz we're gonna play another Joy Division song. This is Love Will Tear Us Apart."

Starts with an unadorned riff unlike previous versions. I like it.

Hooky can be heard saying "Here we go!" a la Monaco midway.

BS: "Thanks a lot, we're gonna hit a few New Order songs for you, and get this party rocking! And I'll tell you what, in every single bar in the whole festival, it's free drinks on New Order. After this concert, go and help yourself."

(appropriately enough) _Paradise_

BS: "Thank you very much!"

_Confusion_

BS: "Okay. The next song is called Confusion."

Some nice sounds in this one, including different samples, like Apollo.

BS: "Thank you so much."

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle_

Audience version I have has left-channel dropout for about the first 25 seconds.

_Temptation_

BS: "You know what I said about free bar before, I was joking, you know."

PH: "Oh, you're gonna alienate the audience, Barn. What are we gonna do? Anyway...(sigh)...(in his patented growl voice) That's what we're gonna do!"

(thanks to Ally for the correction)

"Oh, it's the last time, it's the last fucking time."

BS: "Thank you very much! Goodnight! You've been a fucking great audience! And we've been a fucking great band!"

Alan Wise steps up to the mic for the encore, Blue Monday.

"That wasn't bad, was it? If you like that type of thing. I've picked up the 50 quid from Melvin and Vince thanks very much. We've been paid now. We intend to come back in the future.

That really is a hard act to follow, isn't it, by the way? It's a bit like a religious experience, except why go through all that church instead? I'll go and check on it for you."

...

"Ladies and Gentlemen, the greatest act that Droylsdon ever produced A big cheer for my favorites and yours, New Order!"

_Blue___Monday_

PH: "Thank you, Alan!"

BS: "Hooky, would you stop bringing yer dad to all the gigs?"

The vocals come late into this one. Also, you can clearly hear audience members scream out things.

"If it wasn't for your big penis, I'd be a heavenly person today."

During the breakdown, Bernard espys something in the audience and yells "What's going on here?"

"Thank you. Goes on for fucking ages, that song, doesn't it?"

_World___In___Motion_

"Well what have we got here, well what have we got here? Please welcome Mr. Keith Allen."

(cheers as Keith approaches)

BS: "Okay..."

KA: "Ahaha..."

BS: "A few years ago, we did a little number with Keith, give the fucker a microphone, will ya..."

KA: "Get a fuckin' microphone, give me a fucking microphone!"

BS: "He's got one, he's got one, all right, I'm a bit shortsited these days. You may have heard of it, it's called World In Motion. I don't think we need the page now, can we..."

KA: "And Chris Evans is still a ginger cunt!"

BS: "No he's not, I like him."

KA: "Yes he fuckin' is!"

(WIM is played)

PH: "Thank you Reading, goodnight!"

BS: "Cheers, everybody! Which way do we get off?"

Alan one more time.

Playing in the Alexandria Palace in London on New Year's Eve. Check your press for details. But...New Order, at the Alexandria Palace New Year's Eve.

NO: 29 DEC 98 Manchester Evening News Arena - Manchester, England

Definitely an ATR recording used for this writing, as it has the same sonic characteristics of his other recordings of this era.

Alan Wise is at the helm once again, introducing the band:

AW: "...Doug Smith. And he's at the Ricks tonight for those that want to come afterwards. Now listen, there's a group here, I've often been asked, "How would you define their music?" (a fan at this point interjects, "Shit".) Yeah, well I've thought about it for a long time and I came up with the answer: "Klezmer for goyim". Anybody understand that? (girls near the taper respond, "No") All right, there's four girls that have no idea or the other way around and they all come from Macclesfield or somewhere, you all know them as NEW ORDER!!"

AW: "Thanks a lot, that's 'Uncle Al' to his pal...."

_Regret_

BS: "Thanks a lot for coming...eh, we're New Order, this is New Years Eve, and this is Regret."

At the word 'lot' the volume surges...and there's a couple of more subtle volume shifts as the taper adjusts levels. The band likely took the stage very late on the 29th.

Plenty of singalongs and audience banter, an ATR recording wouldn't be what it was without that.

punter: "William...10 seconds"

BS: "Thanks a lot".

Some (quietish) keyboards.

BS: "Excuse me while I have a drink of water." Hooky coughs. :-)

_Touched___By___The___Hand___Of___God_

BS: "This is 'Touched'"

About 3:05 in.

female punter: "just press it! Fuckin' A (or something that sounds like that)

BS: "Thank you very much."

_Isolation_

PH: "We'd like to dedicate this one to all the nurses in the audience, as they've done me and my wife a very great favor. God bless ya, it's called Isolation."

BS: "Thank you!"

BS: "Tell me if I'm whooping too much. I'm just having a fucking great time."

Chanting for 'New Order, New Order'...somebody does the "She, she, she shine on" bit from the House Of Love song?

_Ceremony_

BS: "Okay, this is, eh, Ceremony."

(at the end)

BS: "Thank you! This is pl...(?) difficult to play, that one."

Band tune up a bit.

PH: "What Momma always made a [sounds like 'proxy'] for that..."

Girl cries out for 'Village'. And who I presume is Alex himself cries out for 'Love Vigilantes'.

Hooky at this point makes a startling pronouncement.

PH: "Get anything nice for Christmas, Alex? A new tape recorder? [Alex at this point cries out 'you daft bastard, Jesus!'] Blank tapes? No Durex in there then yet?"

Female friend chanting out 'Hooky, Hooky' and giggling. The next announcements creates more paroxyms of joy.

Bernard strums guitar.

_Guilty___Partner_

BS: "Okay, this song, we've never played it before why, so bear with us. It's called 'Guilty Partner."

girl next to Alex: "Holy shit...shit!"

Right away the band lose the plot on that one. Bernard cries out, "Adam", as the rendition breaks down.

same girl: "this is crap..."

BS: "Like I said, this is the first time we've played it so give, a chance. Even we make mistakes."

Fans chant the groups name at that humble admission.

BS: "All right, we'll get it right this time, just you watch. And if we don't, it's part of the charm, innit?"

(thanks to Shug of NOOL for the corrections)

BS: "One, two, three, four..." They try again, and do better this time.

BS: "Thank you"

Calls for "1963" and "Sunrise, sunrise...Alex!"

_Atmosphere_

PH: "A bit of light, Andrew please, so I can see what my choice tune we're playing next, thank you." Bernard off-mic calls for Adam.

BS: "This is Atmosphere."

BS: "Thank you very much."

More calls for '1963' and 'Sunrise, we like that one'. Someone else calls out for 'Atrocity Exhibition'. Some diehards would argue they're already witnessing it.

_Heart___And___Soul_

BS: "Heart and Soul, another Joy Division song.

_Paradise_

BS: "My mike sounds distorted, I don't know if it's the battery or whatever. Ehh, right. This next song's Paradise."

Fans call for 'Everything's gone green'

BS: "Ow...Quite a bit out of breath now. Two two."

girl next to Alex: "Just talk to his chest as loud as you can." which she repeats a few times, to the puzzlement of the other person she's addressing, who finally has to be told that Alex is taping the gig. Pretty funny stuff.

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle_

BS: "It's a bit hot in here, I've got a temperature. This is Bizarre Love...Triangle."

BS: "Thank you! It's all downhill from now on." (with an assist for making out what he's saying by Alex's lady mate)

More chanting.

_True___Faith_

BS: "Thank you...wooh! I don't mind admitting we're a bit tired now. You don't mind if we go after...off after this next song, do you? But we'll come back on, won't we? We just need a little light refreshment, Class A. I'm only joking...you're witnessing the birth of the new New Order."

[while he's talking the lasses are saying somebody doesn't know no songs at all]

_Temptation_

PH: "Bright World Hall brings you Temptation."

I think that's what he says, anyway.

Somebody on stage mutters "ba-bom-ba-bom-ba-bom-ba-bom" along with the bass.

BS: "Thank you, you've been a great audience. I want to get through a sandwich, brush up."

New Order than vacate for five minutes while they do just that.

ATR: "Bizarrely enough, that's exactly what you do when you're a top-notch rock-and-roll star, you go off for a sandwich!"

and...

ATR: "Right, the encore will *not* be Blue Monday and whatever other fucking rubbish shite they did..."

His lady mate interrupts..."Alex, are you still taping this? Alex... Alex, are you taping this?"

ATR: "I will be in a minute. Fine Time, Thieves Like Us, and one other, which for me which will be beautiful."

[of course, he is taping throughout...which he admits a bit later on!]

There's a lot more, but it's not relevant to the band, whom eventually come back on.

_Love___Will___Tear___Us___Apart_

BS: "Hope you all like jazz, because we're gonna have an, erm, freeform jazz jam now. This is our new direction, it's called Love Will Tear Us Apart."

_Fine___Time_

BS: "Go make a real amount of space so I can get dancing. This is...eh, Fine Time. Cue me, Steve."

BS: "Thank you. New [Gold?] Dream, anything Jason, [mutters]"

_Blue___Monday_

Hardfloor version, very ace.

While Hooky's playing it, of course.

BS: "Where's the fucking bassline?"

A few seconds later.

lyric: "How does it feel when you dick goes small?"

BS: "This is for you."

at a later point you can hear Bernard utter "Techno" once the Hardfloor bassline makes an appearance.

(at end)

BS: "Thank you, good night, you've been a grat audience, oi! Thank you!"

NO: 31 DEC 98 Alexandria Palace "Ally Pally" - London, England

I originally did the writeup with the WMAs on the neworderonline.com, but have since gotten a very good lossless copy of this.

Daily Telegraph 4 Jan 99 / Essex Courier 15 Jan 99

http://www.mf-temptation.co.uk/london/latest.htm

(this link is broken, alas)

Hello, we're in the 90s alert: "...drummer Stephen Morris and his girlfriend keyboard player". They've now married.

And this tidbit...

Date: Wed, 22 Aug 2001 10:51:26 +0000
From: al.jarvis
Subject: [Re: Re: (Fac33) live BLT preference ]

Sorry to be a bore but BLT was defo played at Hemel in 85 as an instrumental. And 'Cock Like The M1' was the Festival Hall, not Woolwich.

Barney said at NYE 98 that they'd never played Guilty Partner before ... despite playing it just 48hrs earlier at the Nynex.

The lads have got shite memories - Barney said to us in the States that they had to play LWTUA on this tour cos they'd never played it in America before! Er, wrong!

Writup, thanks go to Simon Park for assisting with portions of this.

I just have the WMAs on the neworderonline.com site.

Alan Wise at the mic. We join him now in progress...

AW: "...know when, uh, Bernard Sumner gets a few friends together, to celebrate the New Year. How long people have asked me, 'What type of music are New Order, wha...how would you define New Order?' And after giving them all their faults, I came up with the following conclusion: it's klezmer for goyim. Nobody knows what that means, except the Hampstead(?) branch of the family. Ladies and gentlemen *coughs* from boys and girls that have come all the way here to entertain you, you know them as...New Order."

_Regret_

PH: "Evening."

BS: "Hi, we're New Order, and we're a bit fucked, but we're still gonna kick the shit out of ya! This is Regret."

Has anybody wondered about what sounds like a metronome marking the beginning of Regret?

BS: "Whoah Thank you". Bernard then grunts, and then chortles/coughs.

PH: 'Got fuck all to say, so I'll shut ya."

_Touched___By___The___Hand___Of___God_

PH: "Not football this is, no shouting."

This version (like all the other '98 performances) is funkified, which is cool with me.

BS: "Thank you. Thank you very much. A little bit out of breath now."

_Isolation_

PH: "This one's for Twinny, he's been a very good boy tonight, done me a real favor, thanks mate."

BS: "Thank you." Feedback squall.

_Ceremony_

BS: "Thanks a lot. We're gonna have a fucking great New Year's Eve tonight, aren't we? Just you wait."

(after)

BS: "Thank you!" More feedback.

BS: "Thanks a lot."

A portion of this performance can be seen on the 511 DVD. There's a great bit where Hooky, standing next to Bernard, smirks at Gillian. All three together on stage for the last time.

_Guilty___Partner_

PH: "You'll have to speak up, [Bernard interrupts at this point] in a loud and clear voice."

BS: "This is a song, right, we've never...never played it before. It's called Guilty Partner."

(of course, they played it the gig before!)

A very good performance, nice emotional guitar soloing.

BS: "Thank you!". Guitar strings being run on by pick.

BS: "Thank you very much."

_Atmosphere_

BS: "This is a Joy Division song, and it's called Atmosphere."

Which they play.

BS: "Thank you very much."

Punter: "C'mon you faggot!"

_Heart___And___Soul_

BS: "[clears throat] I've run out of things to say actually."

PH: "I know, that's how I feel today."

BS: "This is Heart & Soul."

They play H&S. A portion of this performance appears on the 511 DVD.

BS: "Thank you." Guitar strum.

BS: "I wish I knew what you were saying, cuz I'm sure it's so interesting. Cuz you've all got nice friendly faces...for Cockneys!"

_Paradise_

BS: "Okay, let's go! This is Paradise."

Which they play.

BS: "Woo. Thank you. 's fucks"

_Bizarre___Love___Triangle_

PH: "You want love? Apples and Pears, yeah? Yeah..."

(thanks to Shug of NOOL for the correction)

BS: "This is Bizarre Love Triangle."

They seem out of sync here.

BS: "Thank you very much." (feedback continues)

PH: "...and girls"

_True___Faith_

PH: "You've made an old man very happy...and there he is!"

Hooky yells out "Here we go!" as he is wont to do during this song. He also yells out "C'mon [something]" later on as he goes into his bass solo.

BS: "Thank you! Woo! If it's a bit hot up here, what's it like down there?"

_Temptation_

(about 2:40 in)

BS: "It's 1999, it's 12 o'clock. Happy New Year, everyone! Woo!"

He also sings..."Oh it's the last fucking time" about 5:50 in. The "1, 2, 3, 4" count stuff comes in at about 6:05.

BS: "Happy New Year, everyone!"

PH: "Happy New Year, everyone. I hope you get what each and every one of you deserves!"

BS: "Thanks a lot! You've been fucking great. Fabulous...acutally.

AW: "What...year...what is it, oh I lost my voice. Happy New Year, everyone. One more year to becoming an anthichrist, eh? [clears throat] As you know, this class is going on into the wee hours of the morning, and I got good reason to suppose that New Order will be back in a bit. [cheering] Until they do, we'd like to thank Vince Power, [two words] as usual for putting the show on, all their friends and helpers, especially the guys who provide security, from Scotland. Now, has anybody noticed something strange? Haha, yeah what's happening is that there's a comet coming. Yeah, this is the last year of your existence."

There's a bunch more from Alan, but I'll be damned if I can bother noting it all down. Maybe I can coerce Simon into doing it.

BS: "Let's hear it for Manchester...[cheering] And London!" [more cheering]

_Love___Will___Tear___Us___Apart_

BS: "This is Love Will Tear Us Apart."

BS: "Wooo! Thank you! Our special guest here tonight, please welcome Bez."

Bez: "Yeahhh. 1999. Eh? Can I say something? FAC51! We do it cuz we like it. Yesss."

_Fine___Time_

Bez: "Eh, gimme a fookin' shout. New Order!"

This sounds exactly like how a beautiful mess should.

(about 2:00 in)

Bez; (whistles) Want to [two words] out...1999!"

(whistle)

Bez says some more stuff. Including a slurred "you're much too young"

The end still has the sheep samples.

PH: "Thank you."
BS: "Thank you.

Bez and Barney vocally collide, negating each other. Bez says "Fac 51 forever!"

_Blue___Monday_

The beginning is from the Hardfloor mix!

BS: "This is Blue Monday"

Bez: "Rude boys. Rude boys. Calling all rude boys."

(whistles)

BS: "We do this...keep it [ ?]"

(yet another whistle)

Bez: "How does it feel? How does it feel?" (and a few times throughout)

Bez says "1991" during the first break. Madchester, anyone?

He repeats the "1999...1991...How does it feel?" mantra

"It feels good!"

Bez rambles near the end, but is unintelligable because of all the feedback and echo.

Fans chant.

AW: "[mutters] A fitting musical ending there, thank you. Simon would be pleased to know the Happy Mondays are reforming. So, it's good night from New Order, and hope you have a lovely evening. Good night. But the party's just starting!"

Shug also reports that AW also said:

"So it's good night form New Order and we hope you have a lovely evening...if you're drinking and driving, remember to wear a seat belt, that's from Bernard!"
